Making botany into art
By CHLOE JAENICKE DANIELLE Dalkin has created a beautiful world of botany in her new gallery shop exhibition titled The Plaster Conservatory, which will be showing throughout the month of February at the Benalla Art Gallery. Ms Dalkin is from Mount Beauty and her current exhibition uses the medium of plaster bas relief to create a carefully curated collection of botanical plaster pills. While she has always described herself as a maker since creating crafts as a child, exhibiting her works with paper for around 10 years and featuring in numerous regional art shows, Ms Dalkin only started experimenting with the medium of plaster and clay around five years ago. “After coming across examples of plaster bas relief art online and on TV, I was inspired to give it a go,” she said. “Plaster work is a more recent interest of mine and I’ve continued to exhibit both paper and plaster works.” From there she taught herself how to work with the medium, which she said involved plenty of trial and error. “It’s very rewarding when results are good, which motivates me to keep creating,” she said. While there are many of benefits to working with the plaster bas relief medium Ms Dalkin enjoys, she said there are also challenges.
