WITH Santa stretched to the limit during a very busy Christmas season, it takes a special kind of person to fill his sturdy black boots.

Across the world, many special people dress up as Santa to bring joy to both the young and the young at heart.

One such person is Wangaratta resident Peter Leach, who estimates he has been bringing joy to Christmas celebrations in the region for about 20 years.

A member of Wangaratta CFA for around 45 years, he first began fulfilling Santa duties at special occasions within the CFA, but as the years passed, he found himself more and more in demand for community events and festive season appearances.

In more recent years he has begun doing work as a professional Santa for a company called Straight Down The Line Promotions, but for the most part, he has fulfilled Santa duties everywhere from kindergartens to charity events.

For Peter, dressing as Santa is just his way of sharing festive season happiness and joy with his local community.

Creating an emergency fund ACCORDING to the latest research from Mortgage Choice, 40.3 per cent of Australians did not feel they had enough money put away for ‘rainy day’ expenses.

“To hear that 2 in every 5 Australians do not have the funds needed to cope with unforeseen incidents is quite alarming,” Mortgage Choice chief executive officer John Flavell said.

“The reality is, unexpected events can occur from time to time.

“And these unforeseen events, like the loss of a job, a car accident, an illness, or a death in the family, can cause significant financial strain.

“Indeed, unforeseen events can throw off anyone’s budget, particularly for those who are living pay cheque to pay cheque.

“And while we cannot plan for such events, you can be prepared for them by creating a ‘rainy day’ account.”

Mr Flavell said there were three key strategies that all Australians could employ to safeguard themselves and their financial situation against unexpected events.

1. Set up an emergency fund “In the first instance, Australians would be wise to set up an emergency fund that they can easily access for any unexpected costs,” Mr Flavell said.

“Not only will an emergency ‘savings fund’ give them greater ‘peace of mind’, but it will help reduce their reliance on credit cards

and/or personal loans, which can be costly and create further financial debt.”

Mr Flavell said all savings should be kept separate from other everyday accounts, and, where possible, it is a good idea to choose an account with a high interest rate and low fees.

2. Free up cash flow by paying off debts “A lot of Australians have credit cards, personal loans, car loans and other debts that boast high interest rates,” Mr Flavell said.

“These debts eat into a person’s cash flow, which can effectively stop them from putting money away for rainy day expenses.

“Anyone who has various small debts with high interest rates should make it a priority to pay off these debts as fast as possible. “ 3. Ensure you’re insured Of course, while it is important to have emergency funds saved away for rainy day expenses, Mr Flavell said it was equally important for Australians to have adequate insurance.

“Insurance will provide financial protection to Australians and their families should the unexpected happen.

“Better yet, insurance will also help minimise the stress and pressure associated with unforeseen events.”

Mr Flavell said any person concerned about their financial situation should speak to a financial adviser.

Merry Christmas in the garden WITH Christmas almost upon us, and the long hot summer to follow, take some time out to prepare your garden.

If you are planning on having a Christmas get together at your place or going away for the holidays, here are some tips to keep your garden healthy and looking its best over the holiday season.

Give the lawn a good feed and control weeds.

Dynamic Lifter Concentrated Lawn Food has fast acting nutrients to help green up the lawn and concentrated organic matter to help promote long term soil health.

‘Weed n feed” kills a selection of broadleaf weeds like capeweed, bindii, clover, dandelions and thistles while fertilising the lawn at the same time.

Christmas table centre pieces can be created using traditional red Poinsettias, with their lovely red bracts, or try the gorgeous pink and white varieties available from Oasis.

Cut bunches of NSW Christmas bush or eucalypt buds and flowers for beautiful vase displays.

And for the Christmas day table, add a big bowl of sweet and juicy red strawberries and chilled cherries or ripe stone fruits like nectarine, apricots and peaches. Raid the veggie patch for leafy salad greens, tomatoes, cucumber, carrot, capsicum, radish, beans, zucchini, celery, spring onions and sweet corn.

Finally, make Christmas hampers filled with produce from your garden for families and friends.

A gift of home-grown or homemade produce will always be appreciated.

Feeding the skin and coat of your pet THE skin is actually the largest organ of the body and plays a critical role in providing a physical and functional barrier between the animal and its environment.

As the first line of defence, the skin protects the animal from chemical, physical and microbial agents.

It also protects the animal against UV exposure and plays an important role in thermoregulation (as in trying to maintain a constant temperature in the body).

As the first point of contact between an animal and its environment, the skin is vulnerable to damage.

It is thus not a surprise that the skin is very metabolically active and constantly renewing itself.

As a result, the skin and coat rely heavily on the nutrients provided by the diet.

Nutrients of particular importance include high quality protein and fats, as well as specific vitamins and minerals.

The hair and skin of all mammals is made up of approximately 95 per cent protein and consumes approximately 30 per cent of the overall daily protein intake.

Poor quality protein is harder to digest and access the building

A protein deficiency will result in a thin, rough, dry hair coat.

Both omega 3 and omega 6 fatty acids are equally important for skin and coat health.

Omega 6 fatty acids are integral for the production of specialised fats called ceramides, which hold the skin cells together and forms the water-proof barrier layer of the skin.

A deficiency of omega 6 fatty acids is generally seen with dandruff.

Omega 3 fatty acids are often used to help manage inflammatory conditions, such as dermatitis and arthritis.

Increasing the amount of omega 3 fatty acids in the diet may help reduce itching and redness of the skin.

Feeding a complete and balanced diet is crucial in maintaining optimal skin condition.

Interestingly, even subtle changes to an animal’s diet can have a striking impact on the condition of their skin and coat.

“It’s great to see their reaction.

“I try to interact with them as much as I can.

“You try and keep the magic going for them as long as you can.”

He has made regular appearances as Santa in Wangaratta’s CoStore in the past few years, and said it is not just wide-eyed children who enjoy spending time with Santa – everyone from teenagers to senior citizens have lined up to get a festive photo with him to send to their relatives or post on social media.

“Christmas spirit is the kind of

thing that doesn’t seem to fade with age,” Peter said.

He said that Christmas was among his favourite times of year, as it was a time for people to come together and celebrate.

“It’s not all about presents, it’s about being happy and together,” he said.

He has had many modes of transport as Santa, from utes and police cars and even helicopters, but one of his favourite ways to make an entrance is on Wangaratta CFA’s instantly recognisable Dodge 1938 vehicle, which adds a classic touch to proceedings.

“We love to get it out,” he said of the Dodge.

While Wangaratta is a long way

from the North Pole, Peter said he had his own Santa strategies to keep his cool in the Australian summer heat, with strategically timed cold water breaks at the top of his list.

As for his personal Christmas traditions, Peter said he enjoys nothing more at Christmas than to indulge in a nice feast of seafood, listening to Christmas carols and relaxing.

Peter Leach will be available at the Wangaratta Co-Store daily until Christmas Eve for people to get selfies with Santa, and will also make selected appearances at Wangaratta’s Tavern Terrace Christmas light display in the evenings leading up to Christmas.

Festive fishing looks a treat

with ROB ALEXANDER, Wangaratta WELL there’s another year done and dusted. It seems like yesterday that I was wishing you all a Merry Christmas.

My weekly fishing report will be on hiatus now until early in the new year.

Over the festive season we should see some great fishing across North East Victoria. Based on weather forecasts I am predicting that the Ovens River will fish really well for Murray cod with a higher flow than usual for Christmas.

The Broken, lower Kiewa, lower Mitta Mitta, lower Buffalo, and King Rivers will all be worth fishing for Murray cod with healthy flows of water in each stream.

Baits of cheese and bardi grubs should do well.

There’s a new bait on the block called ‘chickens hit’ that is also well worth a try and can be purchased at compleat angler tackle stores in both Wangaratta and Lavington.

I have already used it with great success.

Lure fisherman should try large spinnerbaits and large hard body lures, with bright colours being a great choice in the higher than usual water. Don’t overlook large surface lures after the sun sets.

Trout fisherman should head to the upper Ovens River upstream of Bright, as well as the Buckland River, and Mitta Mitta River upstream of Eskdale.

I have had good reports from all of these streams recently. The Kiewa River around Tawonga has been producing a few trout as well, but not in huge numbers.

Redfin anglers should try Lake Sambell, Lake Hume, Lake Eildon or Waranga basin. All of these lakes have been producing redfin lately. Lakes William Hovell and Buffalo have been fishing slowly.

Yellowbelly anglers should try Lake Nillahcootie, the lower Broken River, Lake Eildon and Lake Hume. The Murray River around Albury has also been producing a few nice yellowbelly recently.

Got the power: the future of batteries WHILE smartphones, smarthomes and even smart wearables are growing ever more advanced, theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re still limited by power.

The battery hasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t advanced in decades.

But weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re on the verge of a power revolution.

Big technology and car companies are all too aware of the limitations of lithium-ion batteries. While chips and operating systems are becoming more efďŹ cient to save power weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re still only looking at a day or two of use on a smartphone before having to recharge.

Lithium, the stuff the battery in your smartphones or notebooks are made of, is a toxic substance and in short supply.

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s pretty clear itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not a sustain-

able solution to our mobile power generation requirements.

Luckily, we might be on the cusp of a battery power revolution, with a number of viable alternatives being researched and developed.

Carbon-nanotube batteries One alternative explored by researchers at MIT uses carbon nanotubes, which are non-toxic and non-metallic.

The way carbon nanotube batteries function are also fundamentally different.

Instead of converting chemical energy into electricity, the system developed at MIT harnesses heat.

Coated with sucrose the tiny tubes are lit like at one end like a fuse and progressively burned.

Gold nanowire batteries

The University of California, Irvine have cracked nanowire batteries that can withstand plenty of recharging.

The result could be future batteries that donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t die.

Nanowires, a thousand times thinner than a human hair, pose a great possibility for future batteries.

But theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve always broken down when recharging.

This new discovery uses gold nanowires in a gel electrolyte to avoid that.

In fact these batteries were recharged over 200,000 times in three months and showed no degradation at all.

Graphene car batteries The company Graphenano has

developed a new battery, called Grabat, that could offer electric cars a driving range of up to 500 miles on a charge.

Graphenano, says the batteries can be charged to full in just a few minutes.

It can charge and discharge 33 times faster than lithium ion.

Discharge is also crucial for things like cars that want vast amounts of power in order to pull away quickly.

The capacity of the 2.3V Grabat is huge with around 1000 Wh/kg which compares to lithium ionâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s current 180 Wh/kg.

Solid-state batteries Scientists at MIT, working with Samsung, have discovered solidstate batteries that are better than

current lithium-ion efforts.

These batteries should be safer, last longer and offer more power.

Current lithium-ion batteries rely on an electrolyte liquid to transport charged particles between the two electrodes.

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s this liquid that can be ďŹ&#x201A;ammable and which degrades the battery, limiting life.

According to the MIT report these new batteries could be charged for hundreds of thousands of cycles before degrading.

They could also provide a 20 to 30 per cent improvement in power density meaning that much more charge for whatever they are powering.

And their lack of ďŹ&#x201A;ammability makes them ideal for electric cars.

‘Tis the season for traditions and the TARDIS Channel Chat SHOW: Doctor Who Christmas Special

CHANNEL: ABC TIME: 7:30pm with KYLIE WILSON FROM whipping up Christmas desserts to playing backyard cricket, everyone has their own Christmas tradition.

Apart from enjoying Carols by Candlelight on Christmas eve, and feasting on pancakes and strawberries on Christmas Day with family, one of my own favourite traditions is settling in on Boxing Day evening and watching the Doctor Who Christmas special.

A good way to whet the appetite in the long gap between seasons (or between repeat viewings of earlier seasons), I see the special as a

SPACE AND TIME: Mark Gatiss as The Captain, Peter Capaldi as the 12th Doctor and David Bradley as the First Doctor (a role originally played by William Hartnell), are among the cast of Doctor Who’s upcoming Christmas special, Twice Upon a Time. good dose of fun and adventure and a way for me to indulge my not-so-hidden geeky side.

This new episode, Twice Upon A Time, sees The Doctor (Peter Capaldi) working alongside his first incarnation (David Bradley, playing the

role originated by the late William Hartnell) and other allies to battle mysterious and enchanted glass creatures that are freezing victims in time.

The special will be especially exciting as it will see Capaldi – set to appear at a Melbourne fan convention in autumn next year – “regenerate” into his next incarnation.

And this time, The Doctor will be played for the first time by a woman, Broadchurch actor Jodie Whittaker.

I am excited for the new direction this will steer the show in, and am eager for Whittaker to show off her formidable acting prowess.

Doctor Who: Twice Upon a Time will be available on ABC iview on Tuesday Dec 26 immediately after the UK broadcast and will air that night at 7.30pm on ABC. Fans can also enjoy a special regeneration episode of the fun fan show Whovians, featuring Rove McManus and other special guests, at 8.30pm on ABC COMEDY straight after the airing of the Christmas special – a little bit of icing on the festive cake.

THIS WEEK’S TV HIGHLIGHTS: CRAM!, WIN Network, Wednesday, 7.30pm Packed with fun and banter, this new quiz show is an undemanding summer watch, with team captain Virginia Gay proving her talents in light entertainment as well as acting.
