By BELINDA HARRISON ACCORDING to Chiltern-based Kurt Hickling, storm chasing ‘is a full tilt, adrenalin pumping passion that puts you on the edge of your seat and gives you a front row seat to the main event.’

During every storm season, (September-March), people in the North East prepare their properties in anticipation of severe weather events but for storm chasers, severe weather is an invitation to move toward danger, rather than away from it.

There are many ‘chasers’ across the area who are attracted to the beauty of storms and love to capture nature’s violent expressions in what could be considered an extreme form of landscape photography.

A professional storm chaser for 25 years, Kurt loves putting himself in harm’s way - all in the name of science and photography of course.

Kurt has been fascinated with thunderstorms and severe weather since he was 10 years old and wanted to pursue his passion for severe weather.

In 1997 Kurt joined the Australian Severe Weather Association which was made up of a keen group of storm chasers and meteorologists, including former senior forecaster David Brown from the Bureau of Meteorology.

Together, the group learnt to understand the science of weather, which gave them the skills to anticipate Mother Nature’s next move when they were out in the field.

Kurt felt that being taught by professionals was a very important stage that would take his passion forward in the right direction.

“I was privileged to learn from leading meteorologists such as David who helped me better understand the behaviour of severe weather events in Australia but more so in Victoria,” Kurt said.

De-worming adult horses DE-WORMING recommendations for adult horses have changed in recent years due to increased resistance of intestinal worms (especially the small strongyles) to the commonly used dewormers.

When devising a de-worming strategy for your horses, the aim is to prevent parasitic disease, minimise pasture contamination with worm eggs, and minimise the development of resistance to de-wormers.

The aim is not to eradicate worms from your property entirely, as this is impossible, and attempts to do so inevitably lead to increasing resistance to the de-wormers, leaving you in a worse position than when you started.

Horses don’t need to be parasite free to prevent clinical disease, and selective de-worming allows the preservation of a population of worms which are not resistant to de-wormers.

So, how do you know which of your horses to worm?

You need to identify which horses are shedding large numbers of parasite eggs onto the pasture.

Worming these individuals will minimise pasture contamination.

Recommendations: Perform faecal egg counts (FEC) on

each horse at least once a year.

Select the horses with high FECs (over 500 eggs per gram) for de-worming. Repeat a FEC on these horses 14 days after de-worming to determine whether you have resistance to the product you used.

De-wormers which target encysted larvae (e.g. moxidectin) should not be used on a regular basis. Reserve these for use in horses that need treatment for parasitic disease.

De-worm all your horses once a year with a product that contains praziquantel as this will also treat tapeworms.

Reduce pasture contamination by removing manure. Worm eggs take at least two days to hatch, so cleaning paddocks within this window of time is ideal.

Harrow the paddock and spell in for 6-8 weeks during hot, dry conditions.

Alternate grazing with cattle or sheep.

Use feed bins and hay nets or racks instead of feeding horses on the ground.

Ask your vet for more details regarding de-worming foals, as they require a different strategy to adult horses.

The importance of pollinators THE web of life surrounds us and everything in nature. We share the beauty and usefulness of flowers with many living creatures, including birds, bees, ants, beetles, butterflies and more.

The creatures which depend for their survival on flowers, seeds or fruits can bring much joy. And sometimes they engender annoyance.

The symbiotic relationships between the plant and animal kingdoms have evolved over aeons plants bear flowers, which attract feeding pollinators specifically suited to the shape or colour of the flowers. It could be pollen and nectar for bees or nectar-feeding birds, or maybe a wide and stable platform, such as an open daisy, offering a safe landing place for a butterfly to rest or spend the night.

Correas cross-pollinate readily. Cross-pollination results in hybrids with attributes of mixed parentage. Some particularly attractive selections are propagated and marketed by the nursery industry.

C. ‘Autumn Blaze’ is one such selection. It bursts into full bloom in early winter, smothered in bright orange/pink bells. C. ‘Autumn Blaze’ originated from a single plant from Kangaroo Island, SA. It is

propagated from cuttings to retain its specific characteristics. We have several plants in our garden.

Early this winter, a pair of hungry king parrots feasted on one such plant leaving behind an ‘autumn blaze’ carpet of discarded bells. It was annoying, but in the bigger scheme of things we can be philosophical and realistic. Without birds and other pollinators, our garden would be lifeless and sterile.

A recent reminder of the importance of pollinators is the incursion of the deadly varroa mite outbreak in the bee industry in NSW. Hundreds of hives and millions of bees have been destroyed to contain the mite. The dire flow-on effect of the destruction of beehives has impacted commercial almond groves in Victoria and South Australia.

Beehives from NSW cannot be transported to the almond groves in readiness for the flowering time in early spring. No bees means no pollination and no almond harvest.

As gardeners, we may be frustrated, even annoyed at sharing our gardens with pollinators, but it is in everyone’s best interests to respect the essential roles of the many and varied pollinators and their allotted place in the ecology of earth - a living organism. Enjoy your birds.

A FRIEND of mine has just returned from a Bali holiday which was a gift to herself after a particularly tough time at work over the last two years.

She left the rest of the family behind, feeling the need to escape the drama and the cold and recharge her batteries alone in a warmer climate.

It was amazing to exchange messages on one of our coldest mornings of the year, finding out it had been a balmy 23 degrees there at around the same time it had been minus four here.

It was only then I wished I could teleport myself immediately to the spa where she was staying to feast on tropical fruit and feel the warmth of the sun again.

I’m told we’re about half way through winter so I’m consoling myself with a little seafood and a glass of Piano Piano Pinot Grigio.

The wine is made using traditional Italian winemaking techniques using fruit sourced from sites in the Alpine and Beechworth regions.

It is immediately uplifting; the aroma bright with ripe pear fruit and the clean zing of citrus.

It has a pleasant, soft texture with a hint of almond resonating

The wine’s palate cleansing properties awaken the senses and work beautifully with white fish fillets, dusted with flour and pan-fried in a little butter.

But then again, why on earth would you wait? About $20.

This Day in History - 1895 THE worst mining disaster in the North East began in the early hours of July 20, a Saturday, in 1895.

The Eldorado township was woken by the whistle from the McEvoy mine sounding its emergency call.

A rush of mud had broken through into the mine and entombed a group of men working in the darkness underground.

A breath of quickly-moving air, which extinguished their candles, and the sharp explosive sound of cracking timber, had given the miners a split-second warning of the disaster.

When the night shift was evacuated from the mine and a count made, it was found that six miners were missing.

Rescue parties were organised, and for eight days and nights, teams of volunteers worked to reach the trapped men.

The best 50th birthday present DID you know that June was Bowel Cancer Awareness Month and that the chances of getting bowel cancer increases from the age of 50? Bowel cancer can develop without symptoms and in healthy men and women.

80 per cent of people who develop bowel cancer do not have a family history of the disease but the good news is that if found early, nine out of 10 bowel cancers can be successfully treated.

All 50 to 74 year olds will receive a bowel test kit in the mail every two years as part of the government cancer screening program. It’s free, quick, clean and easily done in your own home with two small samples of poo at separate times. It’s highly accurate if stored in the fridge until posted.

Doing this quickly is important for the best result.

The test looks for traces of blood in the motion (poo). Bowel cancer and polyps (small lumps that can grow on the lining or wall of the bowel) leak tiny amounts of blood. Polyps are not cancer but can develop into cancer over time they can be easily removed if detected early thus reducing the risk of cancer.

The bowel is part of the digestive system and consists of three parts: small bowel which absorbs nutrients from broken down food, colon mainly absorbs water and rectum which stores the poo until it passes out of the body through the anus.

Bowel cancer commonly develops in the colon or rectum, developing from the polyps or small lumps on the lining of the bowel.

Recent and persistent changes in toilet habits, like loose poo, severe constipation, increased need to pass poo, increased unexplained tiredness and weight loss and stomach pain are some of the symptoms that may occur.

Those most at risk include people over 50, who are overweight, have a diet high in red and processed meats and low in vegetables, fruit, beans and whole grains, who have a high alcohol intake, smokers, those with inflammatory bowel disease and a strong family history of bowel cancer.

If blood is found in your sample there could be a number of reasons including polyps, haemorrhoids or inflammation of the bowel and it is best to discuss with the doctor. A recommendation for a colonoscopy to find the reason may be advised.

To reduce your risk of bowel cancer, ensure you test every two years, eat a healthy diet, be physically active and sit less, reduce the amount of alcohol you drink and don’t smoke.

So, get your test kit out, put it somewhere to remind you and commit to the days you will take the sample. Follow the simple directions, complete the form, post it in a timely manner and you will be done and dusted.

“This first hand education put me on a new level where I could continue to learn and grow as a storm chaser.

Over the years, Kurt developed strong skillsets such as understanding the dynamics and key ingredients that are required to produce a thunderstorm, and gained the knowledge to improve his ability to chase that ‘perfect storm’.

He also learnt how to go about collecting valuable information that could be relayed back to Weatherzone and the Bureau of Meteorology in the hope of improving understanding on how a storm structure works and the ability to predict them in the future.

Chasing storms and photographing lightning is highly dangerous and poses risks to even the elite chasers.

Lighting is five times hotter than the surface of the sun and a single strike produces 300 million amps of electricity, travels 4,345,200 km/second and can hit with deadly force.

Despite these dangers, Kurt uses radar and lightning tracking devices to get advanced warning of an approaching storm or alerts of a new storm forming.

Lightning photography and observation is a passion for many people in the community who are fascinated with the way lightning can gracefully dance across the sky or create a direct strike that lets off a sonic boom that can shake a house or small structure.

Kurt never becomes immune to close lightning strikes saying that it’s a constant reminder of who has the upper hand.

“When you are after that perfect photo there are always risks as lightning is unpredictable and very powerful,” Kurt said.

“I have been close to lightning numerous times with the closest being less than 20 metres - it pushed me over with the sheer force of the lightning expanding and contracting the surrounding air.

“No matter how many times I go out collecting data or taking photos, I constantly remind myself that utmost respect needs to be shown because of the changing dynamics of a thunderstorm.”

Kurt also had first hand experience with a tornado that formed just outside of Springhurst this year while out taking photos.

“It was my first encounter with a tornado and while it was moving away from my location at

more than 50 km/hour, it was a surreal and scary experience.”

Kurt uses various instruments that give readings such as speed on inflow and outflow winds as well as downdrafts, which are part of the ingredients that drive a thunderstorm.

Lightning detectors are another device that are used in the field and indicate a strike rate per minute and shows if the storm is approaching or moving away.

Incredibly, anyone can create their own lightning tracker at home as each single lightning strike produces a unique radio frequency and can be picked up by any radio using AM frequency.

This signal will produce a pronounced sound which governs the potential distance from where the strike earthed to the ground.

Thunderstorms are a dangerous, yet beautiful, phenomena that are usually the topic of choice around the dinner table during storm season with the severe weather able to impact and damage homes and properties.

Don’t double dip your deductions this tax time THE Australian Taxation Office (ATO) is reminding people not to make the mistake of double dipping their deductions in their tax return this year.

“Around 8.4 million Australians claimed nearly $19.8 billion in work-related expenses in 2021,” assistant commissioner Tim Loh said.

“That’s a lot of deductions so we want to make sure you get it right the first time and it’s important you claim what you’re entitled to - no more, no less.”

When people prepare their tax return, it’s important to remember the rules for claiming different types of work-related expenses.

What can be claimed depends on the type of job, individual circumstances, and whether there are the required records to support the claim.

“While some people make genuine mistakes, we do see people trying to gain an unfair advantage by claiming incorrect or false expenses,” Mr Loh said.

“A mistake that we often see in tax returns is people claiming expenses twice.

“You wouldn’t double dip your chip, so don’t double dip your deductions.

“Remember, we use sophisticated data analytics to monitor for incorrect information and you risk being audited or penalised for deliberately providing incorrect information.”

Below are some ‘double dipping’ mistakes the ATO sees when people lodge their tax returns each year.

Working from home expenses and the shortcut method: “One in three Aussies claimed working from home expenses in their tax return last year and we expect this trend to continue,” Mr Loh said.

A common mistake we see is people using the working from home shortcut method to claim their working from home expenses and then double dipping, claiming additional amounts in their return for expenses such as their mobile phone and internet bills, as well as the decline in value of equipment and furniture.

When the working from home shortcut method is used to claim working from home expenses, it is allinclusive.

There are three methods available to claim a deduction for working from home expenses depending on individual circumstances, the shortcut, fixed rate and actual cost methods.

The method that gives people the best outcome can be used, as long as the eligibility and recordkeeping requirements for their chosen method are observed.

Taxpayers can use the home office calculator to help them work out which method will give them the best outcome.

“While the traditional methods require receipts, paperwork and other record keeping, the shortcut method only requires a record of hours worked - diary entries or timesheets will suffice,” Mr Loh said.

When claiming working from home expenses using the shortcut method, the amount needs to be included at the Other work-related expenses question in tax returns with ‘COVID-hourly rate’ in the description field.

If a method other than the shortcut method is used in later years and you want to claim depreciation for an expensive purchase such as a laptop, the correct records for that item must be kept.

“Getting your tax return right is simple if you have the right records,” Mr Loh said.

“Make sure you have your records before you lodge your tax return and keep your records after you’ve lodged, in case we have any questions.

“The easiest way to keep track of your records is with the ATO app.

“Even if you choose to lodge your tax return with a registered tax agent, it is still your responsibility to make sure the agent has all the correct records.”

Car expenses Nearly three million people claimed work-related car expenses in 2021 and one of the most common mistakes was people using the cents per kilometre method to make their claim, and then double dipping by claiming expenses separately such as fuel, car insurance and registration.

The ATO will also be taking a closer look at claims calculated using the logbook method, to ensure they reflect people’s circumstances coming out of the pandemic.

“You must choose your preferred method when calculating car expenses, the cents per kilometre or the logbook method,” Mr Loh said.

Reimbursed expenses The ATO is making sure taxpayers aren’t claiming expenses where they have already been reimbursed by their employer – for example if your boss has reimbursed your dry-cleaning costs for your uniform and you then claim laundry deductions on your tax return.

Time to get out on the alpine slopes Mt Buffalo is reporting patchy icy roads so snow chains are required to be carried.

The café and ski school shop at Dingo Dell are open to serve those enjoying snow play however the toboggan run is currently closed due to lack of snow.

Cresta Valley has a wider variety of tobogganing slopes to choose from.

Snowshoeing is available on fair snow cover at Dingo Dell, with Sentinel and Cresta Valley open on very good and good snow condition respectively.

For cross country skiers, Beginners Loop, Bogong Plain and Horn Road trails are open with snow coverage, there are some thin areas on Horn Road.

Mt Hotham is reporting an average of 80cm of snow after some falls late last week.

There are 72 trails and two terrain parks open and up to 10 lifts running.

All 16 cross country trails are open with very good snow cover for classic and/or skating.

Lift tickets can be purchased online on their website.

Falls Creek is still experiencing good snow depth with an average of 73cm and has 11 lifts running.

Night skiing is available Wednesdays and Saturdays from

6pm to 8.45pm.

Cross Country skiing is available with conditions ranging from poor to excellent on 28 trails.

Alpine helicopter tours and transfers, Falls Creek Guides, tobogganing, skiing, snowboarding, snowplay, snow mobile and back country tours, self-guided snowshoeing and the Snowsports School are all now available.

Twilight Tuesdays is also open from 3.30pm-5.30pm at the Village Bowl.

Dinner Plain has patchy snow with an average depth of 7cm and 11 cross country trails open.

Tobogganing will be on Peashooter whilst the Cobungra Platter slope is being prepared for lifting operations.

Additional tobogganing will occur 1.30pm-4.30pm on Saturday and Sunday.

The depth of the Cobungra slope is variable between seven and 20cm, with more in the middle area.
