CREATIVITY and community spirit really is in the blood for Linda D’Agostino. As a child, she would often be found drawing, painting and creating, which led her to study art and design at GOTAFE in Wangaratta. The demands of life meant she had less time to express herself creatively, but then a breast cancer diagnosis five years ago gave the Wangaratta mum and businesswoman time to refocus on her art. And she has never looked back. “I was stuck at home and feeling miserable, she said of her illness, “but I could go outside and paint, and come inside and draw. Linda said she spent hours absorbing the tranquil surroundings of her home, and appreciating the natural landscape around her. “You just forget about everything else, she said, glancing at one of the works in her home studio, featuring positive messages weaved to look like hair. She turns and said she portrayed many females with masses of flowing hair while she was trying to regrow hers, recovering from her illness – art offering solace, strength and true passion in her life. “I’ve got all these ideas I want to put down, Linda says. “The challenge is to keep the imagination going. Her works encompass a diverse variety of media, from ink and paper to watercolours, and some of her favourite subject matter including houses and various portraits of women. One recent work, featuring fairies and entitled Floral Moulin Rouge, is especially intricate.
