A Christmas worth saving for.
ON an ordinary autumn day in 2008, Mt Beauty woman Cath Smith’s life was changed forever. Diagnosed with Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), after being screened after a routine blood bank donation, she immediately assumed she was going to die. “After being told that I wasn’t going to die, because the treatments were allowing people to live as long as people without HIV, I then had my first experience of HIV related stigma, and I was the perpetrator,” Ms Smith said. “I envisaged what people looked like on treatment based on the early days of the epidemic, where they were lucky to survive the side effects of the medications.” She has devoted much of her time since to becoming what she describes as a “stigma warrior”, raising awareness about the condition and trying to remove the stigma of HIV in the community. She contracted HIV after unprotected sex with her boyfriend at the time. “HIV does not choose to infect someone; it does not have a conscience,” she said. “Anyone can contract it, all it takes is exposure during an at risk activity. “There’s people out there who think I chose to contract it. “No one can say that they are HIV negative unless they have been tested, and even then, they may need to be tested again, as HIV has a window period. “People who know their status can then act accordingly by protecting themselves from contracting HIV through the use of condoms or by commencing treatment if they are HIV positive so that they can achieve an undetectable viral load.” continued page |

SUMMER in Australia is fire season. Victoria is one of the most bushfire-prone areas in the world. Whether you live in the city or in the bush, part of keeping your property as safe as possible is a carefully planned garden. Learn what plants are flammable and which are fire retardant. Nothing can guarantee your home will be safe in a bushfire but you can make the area around it less flammable. A simple way to identify how flammable plants are is to remove a small branch, with the leaves attached and set fire to it (in a safe controlled area). Flammable plants will flare up immediately while fire retardant or resistant plants are much harder to ignite. Avoid planting flammable trees near your house. The most flammable trees are Cyprus, pines, eucalyptus and some natives, which all have a high oil or resin content in the leaves and literally explode during a fire. Vines and climbing plants are also extremely flammable, acting as ladder fuels, allowing fire to climb into the canopies of trees, significantly increasing bushfire intensity. Tall grasses are extremely flammable because they readily dry out and burn rapidly. If you live in a fire prone area, it may be wise to remove flammable trees from near the house and replant

with less flammable varieties. Plants with high salt or moisture content and low volatile oil content in their leaves are considered to be fire retardant. Fire retardant trees help protect a house because they burn less readily, slowing the fire down. They provide a physical barrier and reduce the amount of radiant heat, reduce wind speed around the house and help prevent the spread of embers. Fire retardant trees have a high moisture content in the leaves and can slow or stop the fire burning. Nearly all deciduous trees, including fruit trees, are fire retardant. The CFA has developed an online publication, Landscaping for Bushfire: Garden Design and Plant Selection for new and established homes in high-risk areas. This comprehensive guide identifies what you can do to minimise the risk of losing your house in a bushfire. Happy gardening.

Good habits for rabbits MOST people have heard of the diseases used to control the feral rabbit population in Australia: myxomatosis and calicivirus. These diseases are unfortunately just as capable at killing pet rabbits. However, there are some easy steps you can take to reduce the risk of your bunny contracting these diseases. The myxomatosis virus was introduced in the 1950s to control the rabbit plague. Over time resistance has developed in wild rabbits with only 40 per cent now susceptible to the disease. This resistance is not seen in pet rabbits, with 90 per cent susceptibility. Myxomatosis is spread by biting insects like mosquitoes. It initially causes a conjunctivitis but progresses to trouble breathing, lethargy, inappetance and eventual death.
Unfortunately treatment of myxomatosis is generally unrewarding. There is no vaccine available for myxomatosis in Australia. Prevention relies heavily on reducing exposure. It is a good idea to put insectproof netting on rabbit hutches, keep up to date with parasite control and ensure hutches are situated away from water sources, particularly ponds and stagnant puddles. Rabbit-safe insect repellents are available and can also help reduce the risk of contracting the disease. Calicivirus is a virus that was released in response to increasing resistance to myxomatosis. It has been very effective at reducing feral rabbit numbers in most of Australia, however, doesn’t work as well in cooler climates such as Victoria. A newer strain of the virus is
expected to be released this year to combat this. Calicivirus rapidly causes death - there is no effective treatment. Unlike myxomatosis, there is a vaccine available for calicivirus. The vaccine is effective against both the new and older strains of calicivirus. We encourage rabbits to be vaccinated at 10-12 weeks of age, followed by an annual booster to provide ongoing protection and keep our bunnies safe. She added that much of the stigma was unfounded, as a person living with HIV on treatment, with an undetectable viral load, is virtually unable to pass on the virus. “It is definitely a rollercoaster ride with managing side effects of treatments, and the changes to health policies,” Ms Smith said. “We have come a long way with the science, but we are still in the 1980s with attitudes. “As a person openly living with HIV, I am always wearing the hat of advocate and educator.” Ms Smith added that she refused to let her condition defeat her, using the diagnosis as motivation to take steps to maintain not only her physical health, but also her mental health. “I had been suffering from a major depressive disorder for over a decade. “I had just been surviving. “In order to manage my physical health properly, I had to get on top of my mental health,” she added. “I still see my mental health as my major priority, because if I’m not well mentally, I am unable to look after myself physically.” While she finds the side effects from her medication a challenge, she refuses to let it get her down. She moved from Melbourne to the Mt Beauty area a few years ago, and has built a life there ever since as an active member of the community. As well as speaking regularly on behalf of HIV/AIDS awareness charities, she presents regularly on Alpine Radio, and as an avid rider since childhood, has been involved in the rejuvenation of the Tawonga Riding Club, and said she loves being part of the local community. “I love swimming in the rivers and riding my horse on the high plains in summer, and skiing in winter,” Ms Smith said. “The community of the Upper

Then, on Sunday evening I fished the King River again for just two hours, and this time I landed three Murray cod....and saw another tiger snake. That’s the nature of the game when cod fishing I guess, hot and cold and very unpredictable. There has been a few Murray cod caught in Lake Buffalo recently by anglers casting spinnerbaits around the timber close to the steep banks. Murray cod have been stocked into Lake Buffalo in recent years and
we are just now starting to reap the rewards of that stocking. The lower reaches of the Kiewa River have seen some good cod fishing recently, so too has the Broken River downstream of Casey’s weir. This is the best time of the year to chase a Murray cod in North East Victoria. For anybody wanting to beat the heat, don’t forget that we have three high altitude lakes in the region, all with very good numbers of brown trout. Rocky Valley Dam and Pretty Valley Dam at Falls Creek and Lake Catani at Mt Buffalo are all great places to escape the heat, wet a line and feed your trout fishing cravings throughout the summer months.

A RUN of reasonably stable weather has led to some decent fishing across North East Victoria this week. I fished the Ovens River upstream of Wangaratta on Saturday evening where I managed to land two trout cod, and lose a 3rd fish of similar size to the two I landed. One of my trout cod was caught on an orange Wilson Slickback lure, and the other was caught on a Koolabung Codwalker surface lure. I fished the King River at Oxley with my kids one evening last week, and never had a single touch. I did see a tiger snake though. As I have said in the past, you know you’ve had an unsuccessful fishing trip when you see more snakes than fish.

Wangaratta dry, 1915 THE countryside was in the grip of one of the worst droughts on record. The level of the King River, from which Wangaratta drew its water supply, was lower in 1915 than even in the legendary drought year of 1902. The level in the river fell below the intake of the pumps.
At the railway station, a train was stranded because it was unable to take on water until supplies could be brought in from Benalla. While all this was going on, borough council workers were trying to divert the Ovens, via Maloney’s Creek into the King. The strategy worked, and Wangaratta began drinking again.

Ingredients (serves 10-12) > 1½ cups frozen raspberries > 1/4 cup raspberr y jam > 2 litres vanilla ice cream > 190g packet mini Wagon Wheels > 200gm packet mini marshmallows > 400gm dark chocolate, chopped > 250gm unsalted butter, chopped > 2 x 20cm round sponge or butter cakes > 1/2 cup pure cream Fresh raspberries, to decorate > Skewers of white marshmallows, toasted, to decorate

THOSE of us who like stone fruits are enjoying another bumper season, with sweet peaches, nectarines and apricots abundant and available. Fresh is best, but it’s also hard to go past the flavour of chunky, homemade apricot jam. I’ve always thought it was too hard and messy to do myself and instead relied on the generosity of talented neighbours. But this year I bit the bullet and bought myself a box of apricots, and two days and three batches later I’ve produced my very own amber brew. It took a little time but it was actually really fun, despite everything I touched in the kitchen for the next couple of days feeling vaguely sticky. I thought I was imagining things when I enjoyed a bottle of Gapsted Wines Viognier over lunch at the winery and noticed
BASED on the favourite “choccie bickie� and vintage tuckshop staple, this largerthan-life creation is deceptively simple and wickedly delicious. Incorporating the much loved Wagon Wheel’s best elements – raspberry jam, chocolate and marshmallow – this cake will tempt the tastebuds of Australians, young and old. Method 1. Line an 18cm springform pan with a double thickness of baking paper, ensuring that the paper is 10cm above the top of the pan. Spread the frozen raspberries in an even layer across the bottom of the pan and top with jam. Place ice cream in a bowl and soften with a wooden spoon. Chop half of the Wagon Wheels and stir into the ice cream with the mini marshmallows. Spoon ice cream mix over raspberries and smooth until flat. Cover and freeze for 2-4 hours until very firm. 2. Meanwhile, combine 300g chocolate and the butter in a microwave safe bowl. Microwave on medium power (50 per cent) in 30 second bursts, stirring well in between, until chocolate and butter are melted and smooth. Cool in the fridge, stirring every 5-10 minutes to prevent the edges from setting, until thickened to a spreading consistency. 3. To assemble, place one of the cakes on the base of a serving plate. Remove ice cream from pan, discarding paper. Place ice cream layer on cake and then top with the remaining cake. Spread chocolate butter mix over the top and the sides of the cake to cover. Return to freezer and allow to set for 30 minutes. 4. Heat cream in a saucepan to just below boiling point. Remove from heat and stir in the

Watch out for the gravy train IN one of my last articles for 2015 I talked about options for you as you head toward the age of needing additional care. My reading over the last couple of weeks and the shift in the provision of aged care, makes it all the more important that you consider carefully (probably with family) what is to happen when you are unable to care for yourself. In my younger days the main providers of residential aged care were religious, community based and charitable organisations. Whilst the level of care may have been different, owners were not motivated by profit - but during the last 10 or so years, the number of privately owned aged-care facilities has grown at about twice the rate of those non-profit institutions. It has been suggested that profits in the industry rose by about 40 per cent last year, but the time spent

kenclarke11@bigpond.com caring for residents fell by some seven per cent. However, the Federal Government’s Aged Care Financing Authority has some different thoughts. It believes that even though profits are up, some facilities are doing better than others. A decade ago, a Senate committee held an enquiry into the sector. The subsequent report was critical of the accreditation standards of aged-care facilities, finding them too generalised to
effectively measure care outcomes. Given that the accreditation process enables aged-care facilities to receive government funding, it should not be a rubber stamp. I can remember my time on the board of Northeast Health Wangaratta, and how hard the management and staff needed to work to retain their accreditation. Recently a comprehensive list of quality of care indicators has been developed and which I believe is vital for encouraging continuous improvement and should be compulsory for all aged-care facilities. But guess what, the government made participation voluntary. One of the keys to quality healthcare is a good patient-staff ratio – without mandated ratios, there are some operators who operate with too few registered nurses and personal care attendants.
In this type of service, salaries are the main out-goings. Minimising staff numbers may be the way to maximise the profit, but this increases the stress of those in charge. Not surprisingly there is a high level of burnout in the sector. But don’t blame the owners entirely. There are other healthcare practitioners who are on the gravy train. In an article I was reading a dentistry service treated numerous residents at an aged-care facility, but instead of charging a single “set-up fee” they billed each patient they treated with a $90 set-up fee on top of their bill. Not surprisingly some of the “shady” vocational providers also claiming subsidies to offer aged-care courses are not meeting the national standards.
Caring for older people with health issues such as dementia or incontinence is a demanding job that requires specific expertise. An “accredited”, fast tracked course does not equip graduates to work competently with older people. From the articles I have read in the last couple of weeks, it would appear that relatives with people living in aged-care facilities need to be more involved in their care. It is not enough to simply pay the home the fee and hope for the best. This issue will only grow and I implore you to do something “now” before it becomes too late and your family are faced with a decision that may not suit them, let alone yourself. You will become old too, and I trust you will expect to get as good as, if not better care than your parents are getting in their twilight years.
