SEEING a loved one suffering, especially for extended periods of time, is a difficult experience most people hope they don’t have to go through. For musician and new Wangaratta resident Mandy Connell, seeing her father spend several weeks at Northeast Health Wangaratta (NHW) due to illness made her resolve to help raise funds for the facility in return. Formerly from Brunswick, a solo musician and a part of independent band Stray Hens, Mandy was determined to help the hospital the best way she knew how – through music, to show how grateful her family was for the assistance they provided. She and a number of fellow musicians from Australia and around the world contributed albums or tracks as rewards for people donating to her Pozible campaign, raising more than $1200 towards the hospital’s Community Care Centre Appeal. Mandy said she was very touched by the response by all involved. “It was just an amazing thing,” she said. Finishing the campaign was the culmination of a difficult few months, with her father Peter Finger being hospitalised for a number of illnesses, including hepatitis C (now a curable ailment), previous recovery from a triple heart bypass, and a hernia which led to infection. “He went down to 42kg and when I checked him in to emergency we found out that the recurrent pain he had in the base of his spine was from osteo-myelitis, and a big abscess had broken off his tailbone,” Mandy said. “We were incredibly lucky to have the fine staff at the hospital to help us.” Mandy said her father had lived in Wangaratta for the past few years due to his need to be close to a hospital which performs ascites taps for fluid build-up. continued page |

Countdown is on to the end of tax time WITH just weeks to go before the deadline passes, the Australian Taxation Office is encouraging taxpayers to get their 2016 tax returns in now. Assistant Commissioner Graham Whyte said that people lodging their own tax returns need to have them in by October 31. “This tax time over 7.8 million people have lodged so far and we’ve already issued 5.9 million refunds. “But there are still millions of taxpayers yet to lodge. “MyTax, the ATO’s online lodgment service, is a great way to complete your tax return efficiently. “With pre-filled information, and fully integrated tools and calculators, it is safe and secure, and can be accessed on any smartphone, tablet or computer. “You just need a myGov account linked to the ATO. “This is the first year myTax has been available for everyone, and it smashed 2015’s user record, clocking in at 2 million users only two months into tax time.� Mr Whyte said people can also choose to use a registered tax agent. “Most registered tax agents can lodge returns for their clients later than the October 31 deadline. But if you are using one for the first time or using a different tax agent to last year, you need to contact them by October 31, 2016.� “If you are due a refund, you will generally receive it within two weeks. “The average processing time for online lodgments at the moment is seven days.� Mr Whyte said that once people have lodged they can access a range of support
through online services. “More than five million people have already linked their myGov account to the ATO’s online services, with over 400,000 new people linking in this year alone. “You can easily keep track of the progress of your tax return using our online services. “The tool has already been used 3.3 million times this tax time,� Mr Whyte said. “And if you realise you have made a mistake or forgotten to include something on your tax return you can lodge an amendment. “If you’ve got a debt you can also make a payment or create a payment plan.� Mr Whyte said that if you know you are going to have a tax bill you shouldn’t put off lodging. “By lodging you’ll know exactly how much you owe. “You also have the same amount of time to pay regardless of when you lodge. If you have a debt, you’ll generally need to pay by November 21. “Most people pay their debt on time, but we understand that sometimes people experience issues that prevent them from meeting their tax payment obligations. “If this happens, contact us as early as possible and make sure you still lodge by the deadline.� For more information on help with paying a debt go to www.ato.gov.au/ individuals/payments-to-ato/help-withpaying/. Blue flowering ceanothus WITH all the rain and unusual weather occurring lately it is hard to believe we are mid-way through spring. Although it may not feel like it, there are some plants that remind us spring is definitely in the air. One of the most striking plants is Ceanothus, sometimes called Blue Pacific or Californian Lilac, (no relation to Syringa vulgaris better known as the common Lilac). It has masses of blue flowers covering the shrub in spring and continuing into summer. Blue is a rare flower colour in plants. There are few plants that actually have true blue flowers. There are lots of shades of violet and mauve, but few which are a real blue like ceanothus. And what a blue it is. The tiny flowers are a bright intense blue and massed in small rounded heads. Even the leathery, deep veined leaves are a dark greeny blue colour. Ceanothus is a fast growing plant varying from low spreading ground covers to taller growing shrubs. There are over 50 species, mostly evergreen, which originated from North America and Mexico. They are tough plants, salt resistant
and hardy to cold, frost and heat once established. They grow in full sun to part shade and need good well-draining soil as they don’t cope with wet feet. In fact, overwatering is often the cause of death. Feed with a complete fertiliser during spring and summer and prune lightly after flowering to remove spent flowers and promote bushy, compact growth. The most commonly grown ceanothus in Australia is Ceanothus ‘Blue Pacific’ which was cultivated in Australia over forty years ago. It grows to around 3m high x 3m wide. Other varieties to consider are Ceanothus ‘Trewithen Blue’, which grows to around 6m tall and wide and flowers from late winter. Lower growing spreading varieties are Ceanothus ‘Blue Cushion’ and Ceanothus ‘Blue Sapphire’ which features dark blue flowers. Both grow to a metre with a spread up to two metres. Ceanothus are perfect planted as a single feature tree, in borders, mass planted as informal or formal hedges, or grown as stunning ground covers. Happy gardening.

Inside pet cats OUTSIDE, cats are in danger of cat fights, snake bites, car accidents, and getting lost, among other things. Keeping your pet cat inside eliminates all these issues, and can help keep our wildlife safe. Keeping your cat happy inside might be as simple as providing a warm bed, or might need a bit of imagination, so here’s some tips for environmental enrichment to keep your cat content. The basics: first things first, every pet needs fresh water available at all times, a clean eating area, and somewhere to go to the toilet. Most cats would prefer these areas separate, so that they’re not eating next to their litter tray. Providing a number of litter trays allows your cat to choose their favourite spot, and is a must if you have more than one cat. An easy rule of thumb is one litter tray for each cat, plus one more. Providing enough choice and different locations of litter boxes can help avoid inappropriate toileting (when they toilet in areas other than their litter box, ie the floor or the bed) and working out which litter your cat likes best
can also make litter box use more successful. A little bit of ground work in the beginning will lead to a much happier and cleaner environment for your cat, and a much happier you. Hiding spots: some cats like to be able to get away from it all, keep an eye on the household, or check out what’s happening out of the window. Having multiple safe spots available including up high hidey holes is a great way to keep your cat calm and happy. Cat climbing posts are great for scratching, hiding and climbing, other cats may prefer the top of a cupboard or a cardboard box. Having areas that kids, dogs, or other cats don’t go can be important for your cat’s relaxation time. Environmental enrichment: other things to make your house a cat haven include herbs like catmint or catnip or a box full of leaves from the garden. If your cat likes to play, get creative with toys, these could include food puzzle toys - a water bottle with holes poked in it with dry food inside can work just as well.
If your cat enjoys playing incorporate that into your day, or some time for pats and grooming. Outside time: a good option for your cat to get some fresh air is a cat run. This can have an entry from an inside window so there is free access, and involves having a large enclosure that your cat can explore while being out of harm’s way. Another option would be supervised outside time, or leash walks for your cat. Overall, setting your cat up inside with the right environmental enrichment can be fun and rewarding for you both. If your cat has inappropriate toileting, behaviour changes or seems sore when you’re patting or grooming, among others things, then a trip to the vet might be worthwhile to check there’s nothing underlying those behaviours. She said her father’s low income meant he was formerly living in caravan park accommodation. Mandy said that a lack of affordable accommodation in areas like Wangaratta often led to desperate and disadvantaged people becoming disenfranchised in the community, with negativity from the public often becoming a self fulfilling prophecy. “The poor are part of the community too,” she said, explaining that the trials of the past year had helped her learn to reach out to others and ask for help. “I have a really strong community, because I reach out,” she said. “Dad now has a safe, warm and clean place to live with support from me, and also continued support from District Nursing.” Mandy said her father’s health had much improved and the pair spend as

Rivers dropping, fish biting

THE rain has slowed down and things are finally starting to settle. Having said that, there’s rain forecast for this week - fingers crossed we don’t get too much. Alastair Pattison has been fishing the Mitta Mitta River a bit lately and catching quite a few trout. In Alastair’s words, “the water is still a bit like gravy, but is improving each day”. Rod Shepherd says “the Ovens River is still very high, but nowhere near flooded”. Rod caught heaps of small trout at Harrietville on a Pontoon 21 Cablista lure. The standout fishery in the area at the moment is still the Murray River directly below Lake Hume where I am seeing photos and videos shared every day on social media of very large yellowbelly and trout getting caught, as well as a few small redfin. On Friday morning my wife Lauretta and I went for a drive to Chiltern to take some photos. The first place we went to was Chiltern Valley number 1 dam, an old relic from the mining days. The first thing I noticed upon arrival was that the water was almost boiling with very large European carp swimming near the surface. There are some truly massive carp in there, just waiting to be taken out. I was not prepared, and only had a few worms for bait.

In the half an hour I was there I did not get a bite. If I was to go back there, I would be taking bread or corn as bait, and a few reasonably large brightly coloured bubble floats. Chiltern Valley number 1 dam is a fantastic family destination at the moment, offering a small wood fire barbecue, picnic table, carp fishing

Religious beliefs of ancient Rome and India WITH CHRIS FEBVRE, NEM CREATIVE DESIGNER

ANCIENT Rome had a long and interesting religious history. In the earliest of days, Roman religion was animistic, meaning that people believed that spirits inhabited nearly everything, people included, and was largely practiced by the tribes that would form the Roman Empire. Afterward, a triad of gods were added to the spirits, those being Mars - the god of war, Quirinus - the deified founder of Rome, and Jupiter, was worshipped as the supreme god. Due to Etruscan influence, the Roman triad changed to Jupiter, Juno - Jupiter’s wife, and Minerva, their daughter. Ancient Grecian influence saw Rome adopt many of their gods also, and the concept of gods as a whole became more anthropomorphic. Instead of spiritual entities, the gods took on the likeness of humanity,

Concepts such as love and hate soon gained deities that represented them, and a believer might have prayed or sought the guidance of the gods when it came to dealing with emotional situations, rather than simply beseeching the gods for physical matters such as rain for crops. Interestingly, individual expression of belief was not considered overly important amongst Roman citizens. Cities had their own rituals and their own patron deities, and while many of the gods were worshipped outside of a given city, it wasn’t necessarily universal worship, nor did each city give each god the same level of prominence. In many ways, Rome adhered to a form of ‘Freedom of Religion’, a precept

that is a cornerstone of modern democracy in the west, and was very unusual for the time. Because of this, when Rome conquered different lands and countries, they would often adopt and assimilate gods and practices of those lands, instead of simply stamping them out. (In fact, you may be surprised to hear that the Christmas tree itself is actually a pagan practice stemming from Saturnalia, a celebration of the winter solstice, and that the celebration of the birth of Jesus was amalgamated into this festival in order to bridge the gap of the various faiths and cultures the Roman Empire presided over). Historians believe that this acceptance of differing faiths was a

rise to Christianity and Islam. The ‘Dharmic’ religions consist of Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism and Sikhism and each follow the core tenets of Dharma which are patience, forgiveness, piety or self control, honesty, sanctity, control of senses, reason, knowledge or learning, truthfulness, and absence of anger. Beyond these core tenets, the religions do vary considerably, however. Even Hinduism itself is something of an umbrella term, and can describe adherents who are monotheistic (believing in a single god, Brahma), polytheistic (believing in multiple gods, or multiple incarnations of one god, such as Vishnu and Shiva), and even atheistic (believing in no gods at all, but following the core tenets nonetheless). Interestingly, while there are many derivatives, the Dharmic philosophies are much the same today as they were in ancient times, with a heavy focus on enlightenment and spiritual peace. I could write forever about the history of religions and probably still not do the subject justice, but I certainly hope you’ve enjoyed these columns over the last two weeks and have picked up a tidbit or two if you weren’t already familiar.

significant factor in the success of the empire. After all, it may be a slower process, but amalgamating different cultures and practices is far easier than attempting to convert by the sword, and the Romans were nothing if not pragmatic. But with the rise of Christianity, and the cementing of Christian doctrine by the Council of Nicea in 325 A.D. the new faith slowly replaced the old gods over time, and the rest, as they say, is history. Meanwhile, in the eastern regions of the world, a different evolution of religion took place. Hinduism is generally considered to be the oldest religion still practiced today, although there is some question as to how one qualifies this statement. (While Judaism potentially outdates Hinduism, the ancient Jews predominantly had an oral tradition of passing down their faith, and while textual fragments existed as far back the Torah itself wasn’t fully recorded until around 600 B.C.). On the other hand the Vedic scriptures from which Hinduism is derived date as far back as 1700 B.C. It’s an oversimplification, but in many ways Hinduism gave rise to a number of the eastern religious philosophies, in much the same way that Judaism gave
