WHETHER it is working with advocacy groups, or visiting and making friends with refugees at the Melbourne Immigration Transfer Accommodation Facility (MITA), the plight of people who come to Australia seeking asylum is never far from Jacquie Coupe’s mind.

The Londrigan resident is passionate about improving the lot of asylum seekers in detention, and is a member of groups including Beechworth Refugee/Asylum Seeker Support Group and Grandmothers against the Detention of Refugee Children.

She says as a grandmother, she wants to improve things for the next generation.

“I just want to say to my granddaughter I really tried my hardest to make things better,” Ms Coupe said.

“I feel that we all, ultimately, are the same and we’re sharing this planet.

“We also have an obligation by signing the United Nations Refugee convention in 1951 to actually help people who are fleeing terror and fleeing very difficult situations in their country.

“I can’t sleep at night knowing that we’re treating these people as criminals.”

Ms Coupe said that by speaking with asylum seekers on her visits to Melbourne, she had heard many accounts of the horrors they had fled from.

These include Iranians who have been “brutalised” and had loved ones threatened for speaking against their government, and members of Sri Lanka’s Tamil population who had been subject to persecution from the Sinhalese populations, including losing loved ones to bombs or other violence, or living in fear of rape. continued page |

ONCE you have identified which foods you are reacting to, you can include the following foods to help to clear/break up mucous and improve the body’s ability to clear allergens from your sinuses.

Mucous is a normal body secretion.

All mucous membranes continually secrete mucous as a means of keeping the surfaces moist and lubricated.

The body reacts by producing watery mucous.

If this goes on long term, your immune system gets run down and overtaken by infections or food reactions, thus producing larger amounts of more darkly coloured, thicker mucous.

It is easy to distinguish healthy mucous from mucous formed as a reaction to toxicity.

Healthy mucous is clear and slippery.

Unhealthy mucous is cloudy, thick and sticky or profusely watery.

POMEGRANATES are one of the oldest cultivated fruit trees in the world.

Originating in Afghanistan and Iran, the plant features in ancient Greek mythology dating back to the 7th century BC. It may also have been the ‘forbidden fruit’ in the biblical story about the Garden of Eden.

Pomegranate, botanically known as Punica granatum, means seeded apple, but is actually a berry.

The unusual fruit resembles cricket balls, reddish in colour with a small crown where the original flower was.

It is what’s inside that makes them truly unique. Inside are rows of red seeds surrounded by a sweet reddish, jelly like pulp which can be eaten, juiced or used in cooking.

They taste similar to cranberries.

Pomegranates are one of the original super foods containing antioxidants which are linked to the prevention of heart disease and cancer.

They are an excellent source of vitamins B, C and K, folate, potassium and phosphorus.

This deciduous tree is grown for its ornamental appeal as well as the fruit.

Pomegranates have glossy spring foliage changing from red to green, then yellow in the autumn.

In late spring through to late summer, stunning scarlet orange flowers with crepe like petals appear,

which when pollinated, develop into fruit ready to harvest between March and May. Pomegranates are tough plants able to tolerate drought and frosts.

They thrive in a sunny position in a well-draining soil enriched with organic matter.

High temperatures are essential during fruit development for a good flavour.

Apply mulch during the warmer months and water regularly during the fruiting period.

Pomegranate trees do not produce fruit until they are around five years old and bear even better after a cold winter.

Pomegranates develop fruit on spurs of mature wood so prune the tree lightly in winter to encourage growth of new fruiting spurs.

Two of the best varieties are ‘Wonderful’ and the Australian bred ‘Ben Hur’ which grow to around three metres.

A dwarf form, ‘Nana’ grows to one metre. ‘Nana Plena’ is an ornamental, nonfruiting variety with double scarlet coloured flowers.

Hoof abscesses in horses HOOF abscess is a very common cause of lameness in horses at this time of the year.

A hoof abscess is an infection inside the horse’s hoof, usually just under the sole of the hoof, this is extremely painful for the horse and it will usually stand still and be reluctant to move or put any weight on the affected hoof.

Hoof abscesses are caused by bacteria from the environment getting into the hoof through a small crack or hole in the soul of the hoof.

In winter these abscesses are very common as the constant wet weather softens the hoof allowing the bacteria into the hoof through any small cracks, fissures and sometimes nail holes in the feet.

Abscesses can also occur at any time of the year with puncture wounds, cracking or bruising to the feet.

If your horse is very lame and you suspect an abscess the vet should be

called to treat the abscess.

While waiting, try and move the horse to a dry area, clean out the hoof and apply a poultice dressing such as Animalintex or Equitex to the soul of the hoof.

Prevention at this time of the year can be difficult as it is so wet and muddy that there is hardly a dry spot anywhere for the horse to stand in most paddocks in this area.

Regular managing of your horse’s feet with trimming or shoeing by the farrier is very important, and cleaning out the feet as often as possible will help.

A good quality hoof oil can be used to help keep the foot in good condition and a good quality diet is important so that the horse grows healthy hooves.

She said with the plight of people in offshore detention growing ever more visible, the government should work towards processing and assessing the needs of asylum seekers much more quickly.

“Australia ranks very low in terms of the number of asylum seekers we admit, and the vast majority of people coming by boat are found to be genuine refugees,” she said.

“I know that things are tight economically, but this is a humanitarian crisis,” she said.

“These people are desperate for resettlement.

“They don’t sit around talking about their woes, but they are ordinary people and are very frustrated.”

Ms Coupe urged people wishing to make a difference on the asylum

seeker issue to research and learn more, including contacting local refugee advocacy groups.

She is currently preparing for a street stall that will be held by the Grandmothers Against Detention of Refugee Children in Beechworth this October, which will include badgemaking and awareness raising about asylum seekers and their families.

Big week at the ski resorts THIS week is a big one at local ski resorts.

Saturday, August 22 sees the famous Kangaroo Hoppet at Falls Creek, one of the biggest cross country events in the southern hemisphere.

The Hoppet is set to be as popular as ever, and those attending or competing can make their mark on social media with the #myhoppetsnap hashtag on Instagram to put them in the running for special prizes.

The weekend will also see Falls Creek host the Mim Sodergren Women’s 3 Day Program from August 21-23.

At Mt Hotham, the Hotham Masters Festival will take place between August 20-23, full of exciting skiing events.

August 22 will see the Hotham Freeride Series continue with the Rider X event, open to both ski and snowboard disciplines.

There is also plenty going on at Mt Buller, including the FreeBOM event on August 22, and the Subaru Victorian Inteschools Snowsports Championships on August 24, featuring student skiers competing for some of Victoria’s

most coveted boarding and skiing trophies.

Sitting too much a ticking time-bomb SITTING too much, known as sedentary behaviour, has been linked to increased risk of heart disease, diabetes and premature death according to a recent Canadian study, the National Heart Foundation said recently.

The study found that more than half of the average person’s waking hours are spent sitting: watching television, working at a computer, commuting or doing other physically inactive pursuits.

National Heart Foundation CEO, Mary Barry, said epidemic levels of sedentary behaviour had the potential to consign present and future generations of Australians to live lives under the shadow of ill health and early death.

“Just as smoking destroyed the health of generations of Australians, so too does sedentary behaviour have the potential to consign too many of us to an early grave,” Ms Barry said.

“While the health impacts of smoking are only too well known, the sad reality is that the health impacts of sitting too much are either not known as well or taken seriously enough.

“Our modern everyday world is encouraging us to live more sedentary lives than ever, whether this involves sitting behind a desk at work, commuting to and from work or sitting on the couch watching TV or playing computer games.

“We’re oblivious to the very real harm that sitting too much exposes us to, including a heightened risk of heart disease, diabetes and poor mental and emotional health among other chronic health conditions.

Ms Barry said the Canadian study involved compiling and analysing the findings of 47 studies that looked at the health effects of sedentary behaviour.

KEEP ACTIVE: Sitting too much can have adverse health affects.

Researchers adjusted for other types of activity people did, from leisure-time activities to vigorous exercise.

“Disturbingly, researchers found that people who sat for prolonged periods of time had a higher risk of dying from all causes – even those who exercised regularly.

These negative effects were even more pronounced in people who did little or no physical activity.

“What this absolutely highlights is the need for people to break up periods of prolonged sitting with regular movement during the course of their day.

“We need to encourage people to get up and moving, even if it is just for a couple of minutes every hour.

“They can build up their activity levels gradually and feel the benefits.”

Brown butter and cinnamon pull-apart bread

THIS pull-apart brown butter cinnamon bread is like a sinfully delicious cinnamon bun only better: It’s several times bigger, and of course I spread butter on it as well.

Method: Combine yeast with three tablespoons of warm water and a small amount of sugar to activate and let sit for five minutes or until bubbles are apparent.

Combine two cups of flour, sugar, and salt in a large bowl. Whisk.

In a second bowl whisk eggs.

Heat milk and butter in a small saucepan until melted.

Remove from heat and add water and vanilla extract.

Let cool until warm.

Mix together yeast and dry mixture, followed by the milk mixture and eggs.

Stir until combined. Add quarters of a cup of flour. Mix. After placing dough into a greased bowl, cover and set aside for 45 minutes (or until it has grown to twice its size).

To make the filling, mix sugar, nutmeg and cinnamon together and set aside.

Melt/brown butter for five minutes in a saucepan and set aside.

After deflating the dough, add two tablespoons of flour and stir.

Cover and let stand for five minutes.

Meanwhile, flour your workspace and grease a 22 by 12cm loaf pan.

Roll dough out forming a 30 by 50cm rectangle.

Brush dough with browned butter and sprinkle cinnamon mixture atop.

Cut dough into six even lengthwise strips and layer atop one another.

THIS DAY IN HISTORY

Wangaratta a river port? 1856 TRANSPORT by road was such a problem in the early days of the gold rush that alternative methods were seriously considered.

One of the most obvious was to use the waterways, as the rain that turned the roads to mud made highways of the rivers.

It was on August 19, 1856 that

Wangaratta based civil engineer Francis Ryley proposed the floating of a company to clear the Ovens River for navigation from Wangaratta to the junction of the Murray, and to build a landing stage for the unloading of cargoes from South Australia.

The scheme was unable to raise the necessary support, and lapsed.

How well do you know your bank?

IN the days of record interest rates, how come the interest rates on credit cards look like rising if the Reserve Bank pursues its desire to cut the fees paid by the banks to businesses who accept credit card payments?

The Senate inquiry investigating why credit card rates have not fallen in line with the cash rate since it began falling in 2011, will be informed by global credit card giant MasterCard that the institutions most likely to raise rates will be the smaller banks and credit unions as they will suffer a greater loss if fees are cut.

You rarely hear about the Reserve Bank setting the rate for short term borrowing by the banks and they also directly regulate interchange fees and surcharging on cards.

But it does not dictate credit card interest rates.

An option the Reserve Bank has is to cap the interchange fees paid by business to banks issuing MasterCard and Visa cards to 0.3 per cent a transaction, which will more than halve the present average of about 0.83 per cent.

This was a recommendation from the Murray Financial System inquiry which estimated a saving of about $2 billion in fees being paid to the banks each year.

MasterCard public policy and corporate affairs vice-president Brent Thomas said that if “the RBA lowers interchange then there is no doubt consumers would be adversely affected”.
