NOTHING feels quite like a Saturday morning in country Victoria then strolling around a farmer’s market.
Here in the North East, there is one every weekend to keep your pantry stocked and get your fill of local produce and community spirit.
Bright, Make it Bake it Grow it Market organiser, Amanda Hore, said if you’re looking for something original, something handmade, something special and something local, then pay their market a visit.
“You’ll find original artworks, wood work, homewares and skincare, as well as gorgeous kids fashion and jewellery by local

Balancing in-home care and residential respite
AUSTRALIA’S aging population faces a delicate balancing act between the desire for independence and the need for care and support.
For older Australians, particularly those living with dementia, this balance can become especially challenging.
Residential respite serves as a lifeline for elderly Australians who need a break and some assisted living support.
It o ers social interaction, 24/7 care, and structured activities, providing a temporary escape from the daily caregiving routine.
However, for those living with advanced dementia, this transition can be disorienting and challenging.
Dementia, with its impact on memory and cognition, often compels individuals to rely on their long-term memories to navigate daily life.
Transitioning to a new environment for residential respite can disrupt these well-established routines, leading to disorientation and temporary regression.
In contrast, at home care provides a personalised and familiar environment for elderly Australians.
The benefits of at home care include maintaining a sense of
independence, reducing the stress associated with relocation, and minimising the risk of disorientation caused by a change in surroundings.
In the Upper Hume region, initiatives like Carer Gateway play a vital role in ensuring older Australians can remain in their own homes while receiving the care and support they need.
Carer Gateway o ers resources, respite services, and financial assistance to caregivers, making it possible for them to provide the best care possible while also taking well-deserved breaks.
Funding options are also available to enhance the quality of at home care, providing older Australians with a sense of security and well-being, knowing that they can age gracefully and comfortably in their own space.
Upper Murray Family Care
o ers additional funding and resources to support at home care.
It is a testament to the Hume region’s dedication to providing older individuals with the care they need while respecting their desire to stay in their own homes.
At Timeless Support, we firmly believe that at home care is the preferred option, providing a gentle touch of home even in challenging times.
With a preference for inhome care, we can ensure that our aging population receives the care they deserve, preserving the familiarity and warmth of their cherished homes.
Timeless Support is an accredited Home Care Package provider in Wangaratta, providing at home services and support to older Australians in the Hume region.
SPLENDID NEW THEATRE, 1927
THE most wonderful theatre outside the capitals was opened by Hoyts in Albury. It was a palace compared to many of the picture theatres of the day, designed to surround the picture-goer with wonder and amazements, even before the first glimpse of the screen. Hoyts were able to screen the first authentic talkies in the district, when they installed new projection equipment in the theatre in 1929.
FOR THOSE WHO PREFER A HIGHER LEVEL OF CARE
Timeless Support has been approved to provide subsidised home care services through the Australian Government.
Depending on your circumstances you may be able to receive care and services, funded either fully or partly by the Government.
VACCINATIONS is a key part of responsible pet ownership.
It safeguards dogs and puppies from a range of potentially fatal diseases.
Both the Australian Veterinary Association (AVA) and the World Small Animal Veterinary Association (WSAVA) emphasize that every dog should be appropriately immunized.
Core Vaccinations
Core vaccinations are identical worldwide and are essential for all dogs, protecting them against life-threatening diseases.
These are commonly referred to as C3 vaccinations.
• Canine Parvovirus (CPV-2): A highly contagious virus causing severe gastrointestinal disease, often leading to acute death in unvaccinated dogs.
• Canine Distemper Virus (CDV): A serious disease a ecting multiple systems including the respiratory, gastrointestinal and nervous system, frequently resulting in fatality.
• Canine Adenovirus (CAV): The cause of infectious hepatitis that results in liver failure and death.
Non-Core Vaccinations
Non-core vaccinations are vaccinations strongly recommended for animals whose geographical location, lifestyle or local environment places them at risk of contracting other life-threatening diseases.
Dogs entering boarding kennels are required to be vaccinated against kennel cough (C5)
• Bordetella bronchiseptica (Db): A highly contagious bacteria causing kennel cough commonly leading to upper respiratory infections
• Parainfluenza (PI): A highly contagious respiratory virus leading to tracheobronchitis and kennel cough
• Leptospira interrogans (Leptospirosis): A possibly fatal disease causing liver and kidney failure
Schedule Puppies receive maternal antibodies from their mum, which protect against these diseases for about six to eight weeks.
As these maternal antibodies begin to decline, it is important to give them their first vaccination to start the development of their immune systems.
• Six-eight weeks: First puppy vaccination, health check and microchipping.
• 10-12 weeks: Second puppy vaccination and health check.
• 16 weeks – Third and final puppy vaccination and health check.

Cool change welcome, but more rain needed to help bolster fishing
a moment too soon.
The fishing in recent times has been quite slow in a lot of places due to the excessive heat, particularly in the free flowing rivers such as the Ovens River.
Many people have told me of the slow Murray cod fishing over the last couple of weeks, with reports of decent fish being caught only trickling in.
The water will now start to cool down gradually, and the fishing should slowly improve.
What I usually find is that as the water starts to cool in late summer and throughout autumn, the Murray cod fishing becomes very hit and miss.
The more it cools, the more hit and miss it becomes.
Some of my best Murray cod fishing memories are from March and April, right there next to some of my worst.
During the heat I have been bait fishing in the Ovens River in Wangaratta a few times.
Using worms and shrimp as bait I have been catching quite a few fish, although apart from
a couple of carp they have all been very small.
I find that the smaller fish tend to bite better in the heat of summer than the big fish do.
Using worms, I have caught a lot of small trout cod, a few small Murray cod, a few Macquarie perch and a few carp.
Strangely I have not caught any yellowbelly.
All of these fish apart from the carp have been very small, less than 20cm.
The trout streams are all very low at the moment.
Some are drying up in their lower reaches.
We are desperately in need of rain.
As the water cools the trout streams will be worth fishing again.
You will want to head to the larger rivers though as many of the small streams are really struggling for water now.
Why can tinnitus be troublesome? YOUR HEALTH
WELCOME back to Wangaratta Audiology’s series on tinnitus – a persistent ringing or buzzing “head noise” which can be very distressing.
We have previously explored causes of tinnitus, including hearing loss.
Last month we explored some treatment options to assist people living with tinnitus.
For others, tinnitus can remain a di cult part of daily life and even for those who have previously managed well, tinnitus can begin to interfere with everyday tasks.
This month we will explore why this can be the case.
Firstly, it is a good idea to have an understanding about why tinnitus can be distressing.
The limbic system is the part of the brain that processes emotional responses, amongst other things.
When we perceive sound, our limbic system regulates how we feel about that sound.
Feeling uplifted by a piece of music, or annoyed when a mosquito buzzes while trying to get to sleep, are examples of emotional responses to sound.
However, when a sound seems threatening, this triggers a reaction commonly known as “fight or flight”, the response we experience when distressed or frightened.
Unsurprisingly, for many people the onset of head noise can be a threatening sound which can be di cult to deal with at first.
Thankfully, for many individuals there are ways to deal with this new, troublesome sound.
It is possible to manage tinnitus in daily life.
For people who have reported that they have
By JIM THOMPSON, WANGARATTA AUDIOLOGY
“just learned to live with it,” tinnitus can still occasionally be disturbing and di cult to ignore.
Many factors may influence the e ect of tinnitus on us.
It is commonly understood that stress, regardless of its source, impacts an individual’s perception of tinnitus.
Taking care of general well-being, including both physical and mental health, is considered to have a positive e ect on tinnitus distress. Because tinnitus is not just a problem of the ears, it is helpful to find ways to reduce stress.
Monitoring and moderating intake of caffeine, sugar, alcohol and tobacco is often helpful as these substances have been found to temporarily increase tinnitus for some people. It is important to take tinnitus distress seriously, as with any mental health concern.
It is normal to be concerned about tinnitus, particularly when first noticed or if there is a change.
Speak with your GP or a mental health professional about your concerns to rule out any medical conditions that may have led to a worsening of your tinnitus.
