Sherren’s country roots provide inspiration

SHERREN Comensoli’s pursuit of life as a full-time artist took many years to come to fruition as she made her way from a simple, country upbringing in Wangaratta through to design jobs in the bustling suburbs of Melbourne.

“My parents had an early influence on my interests when it comes to design and architecture with my dad a retired builder and my mum an interior designer,” Sherren said.

Her older siblings excelled academically in the areas of economics and accounting and Sherren originally wanted to follow in their footsteps, however she didn’t enjoy those same subjects.

After completing her schooling at St Bernards Primary School and then Galen College in Wangaratta, where she received straight As in art, graphics and sport, Sherren attended RMIT School of Design to study Visual Merchandising and Retail Design.

For 15 years, Sherren worked as a Visual Merchandiser designing product and window displays for retail companies including David Jones and the Sussan Corporation before joining Sportsco as a

National Training Manager.

Her interest in design and art was always simmering away, but it wasn’t until Sherren’s first child came along that the dull voice inside her head started to get louder, demanding to be heard, acknowledged and acted upon.

“I wasn’t doing any sort of art at that stage but then (when I had my first child), I suddenly had time and creative energy that I needed to express - that voice got much louder - and that’s how I got started as an artist.

“My creative energy manifested itself into painting and I filled my house’s blank white walls with my paintings.

“My friends and family started buying my artwork and then friends of theirs wanted pieces and it just grew from there.”

While Sherren has dabbled with watercolour and oils, most of her works are completed using acrylic paints.

“It’s more enjoyable to me as it dries very quickly, which is good because when I’m on a roll with a painting I just keep going until all hours of the night,” she laughed.

Dogs and fireworks QUITE a number of dogs have a fear of fireworks and thunderstorms.

Sometimes this can include loud noises in general.

In the case of thunderstorms, it is difficult to be prepared; however, fireworks often only occur on specific evenings and they are advertised.

It is possible to be prepared to make the experience less terrifying for your dog.

The fear is generally irrational in that it has no basis.

Generally dogs who experience loud noises such as thunderstorms and fireworks when they are young pups under 12 weeks may not have such fear.

Adult dogs experiencing fireworks or other such loud noises for the first time, especially if they genetically have an anxious disposition are more likely to become fearful at these times.

Affected dogs may run away with no direction or goal except to try to escape.

When they run, they are panicked and may get hit by a car on the road because they will not notice anything around them.

Dogs in the home may destroy things to try to divert their attention or even to try to escape.

We have been told of dogs who have ripped away carpet to try to dig through the floor of the house in order to escape.

Some dogs tremble and have a horrible time.

If the dog is punished for going to the toilet inside, they will become more fearful and have more reason to fear the loud noises next time.

Ask your veterinarian about medication to help your dog to relax if it has a problem and fireworks are predicted.

With less fear, a dog can have the ability to learn to cope.

When the fireworks happen, the dog should be allowed to escape to the part of the house where it is most comfortable.

Playing soothing music so another sound is audible may help.

If your dog seeks help from you, you can gently stroke its back and speak soothingly to say ‘good dog’ but do not make contact around the face and generally continue what you are doing.

If you seem anxious, your dog will become more worried.

Kissing your dog or stroking around the head can make your dog think you are worried so gentle long strokes along the back while focusing on something else is most calming for your dog.

Never punish your dog during these episodes or the problem will get worse.

Robin Hood a shady choice KURRAJONGS have some very spectacular close relatives. The Kurrajong (Brachychiton. Populneus), is a hardy and locally common tree, useful in its own right as an ornamental or shade tree.

The Kurrajong is one of over 30 Brachychiton species native to Australia. Many originate from QLD, Northern Territory and New South Wales. All are frost and drought tolerant. Brachychitons respond to significant rainfall by expanding their water-carrying capacity by swelling the distinctive ‘bottle-tree’ trunk, and, conversely, the trunk will shrink inwards in dry times.

Indigenous Australians used the fibrous bark for making string and fishing nets. The succulent roots and flowers were a valuable food source and seeds were eaten raw, roasted or ground into flour.

The Illawarra Flame Tree (B. acerifolius) is a well-known garden feature tree. The characteristic rounded trunk is covered with lacy dark

green bark ‘netting’. The tree bears masses of bell-shaped flowers in summer. There are various named colour forms ranging from soft pink through to bright red. Like many Brachychitons, B. acerifolius is partially deciduous and drops some or all of its leaves prior to flowering.

A legendary member of the Kurrajong family is the Queensland Bottle Tree. B. rupestris grows reliably from seed and established plants are available commercially.

A lesser-known but very beautiful tree is B. discolour, the Queensland Lacebark Tree. It bears prominent clusters of large pink bell-flowers in mid-summer. As its name implies, it too sports a distinctive lace-covered dark green trunk.

All Brachychitons are succulents and are long-lived. The timber has no commercial value. The trunk decomposes rapidly if a tree dies or is felled.

well as horticultural breeding programs have produced some lovely Brachychiton hybrids of which ‘Robin Hood’ (pictured above) is one selection.

Grafting of Brachychitons is straightforward and has an almost 100 per cent success rate. The preferred rootstock is the Kurrajong.

Grafted plants can be expected to flower within two years and will be true to the advertised colour, size and form. Seed-grown plants may display hybrid variability.

‘Robin Hood’ is a grafted Brachychiton which is a lovely feature tree.

One parent - B. bidwillii - The Little Kurrajong is spectacular in its own right.

In our garden ‘Robin Hood’ has reached a height of 2.5 metres in 10 years. It is drought tolerant and has a symmetrical rounded shape with attractive light green foliage. A profusion of stunning bright red bellflowers are borne on new growing tips in mid-summer.

Italian Selection Sangiovese DURING times when we find ourselves unable to source the exact ingredients we need for a recipe, we should consider it an opportunity to learn to be more flexible.

Sherren’s country roots provide inspiration ■

Sherren’s botanical works are influenced by nature and include trees, rocks, rivers, fields and mountains and she paints her scenes in monochrome as well as bright, stunning colours and patterns.

“The nature found in Victoria is an endless source of inspiration for me but I’m also inspired by the beauty of other landscapes when I have the chance to travel,” Sherren said.

Her paintings of silver birch trees, whether painted in colour or moody blacks, whites and greys, are one of her most popular designs.

“Silver birch trees are one of the most meaningful things to paint to me; my family, and my mum in particular, loves silver birches and every house we’ve ever lived in has had

a grouping of them - I think mum has passed on her love of birches to our whole family.”

Sherren’s parents and a large extended family still live around Wangaratta with the artist returning when she can to visit and draw inspiration from the North East region.

In November, Sherren was asked to judge the St Bernard’s Primary School Art Show.

“On previous visits home I have attended that particular art show and I’ve always held the exhibition in high regard,” she said.

“I felt so honoured to be asked to judge the competition and I was genuinely blown away by the talent pool of the artists who exhibited.

“Localised art shows are an amazing opportunity for people to expand their own pri-

vate art collections as well as showcasing their own works.

“I encourage people to buy one artwork per year and within 10 or so years you build up a fantastic art collection that one can be very proud of.”

Sherren has lived in a number of Melbourne suburbs including Middle Park, Elwood, Malvern and Glen Iris but now calls Camberwell home, with a gorgeous studio in nearby Ashburton.

“I do a lot of private commissions but in between those works I always blank out at least two weeks every month to work on my own paintings.”

Sherren’s paintings go out to stockists like Established for Design in Malvern where many well known designers shop and her art has even caught the eye of designers from the TV show The Block,

where she became a stylist.

Her time on The Block was a high point in her career so far, as were her two sell out exhibitions, judging the St Bernard’s Art Show, being a feature artist at the Canterbury Art Exhibition and being commissioned for a huge artwork worth more than $10,000.

“Historically, I haven’t entered or cared much about winning art awards, because I just love painting and love making people who buy my art happy, but those other plaudits have meant just as much to me as would winning any sort of art prize,” Sherren said.

For aspiring artists, Sherren says: “Find you own style and keep developing it over the years, art is an evolution process over a lifetime.

◆ NICE COD: Paul Camilleri caught this lovely Murray cod in the Ovens River late last week. The river is higher than usual for this time of the year, but it is fishing very well.

Summer rain helps to keep fish on the bite THERE has never been a better time to try and catch a fish than right now.

Everywhere you go, the fish seem to be biting.

The Murray cod fishing in all of the rivers is fantastic.

The key is to try and fish in between the dirty water events that follow each La Nina deluge.

This summer rain, although making the water dirty, quite often is providing the rivers with much better flows than usual for this time of the year, making many stretches of water accessible by boat.

I fished Lake William Hovell twice last week, landing a total of around 12 redfin and one carp - yes there are carp in Lake William Hovell.

The redfin were small, and that is to be expected up there, especially in the middle of summer.

The redfin are going absolutely bonkers at Lake Hume at the moment.

I fished at the Ebden boat ramp on Saturday afternoon.

I fished for around an hour, and without a word of a lie, I must have caught 50 redfin, but I only kept two as the rest

The two that I caught were small, but big enough... just!

I was casting a small Strike Tiger 1.5” curl tail grub soft plastic in ‘Banana Shock’ colour before switching to a small minnow, and then a 38mm Damiki blade.

It didn’t seem to matter what I used, the redfin were literally fighting each other to attack it.

Even after the tail got bitten off my soft plastic I was still catching fish on it.

If you want to take your kids fishing somewhere they have a very real chance of catching a few fish, Lake Hume is the place to go.

Most of the redfin are small when fishing off the bank, but trust me, the kids don’t care, as long as they’re catching fish and as long as they wiggle.

Making new year resolutions stick WHAT’S your new year resolution in 2022?

Is it to eat healthier?

To exercise more?

To quit smoking or drinking too much?

To get out and socialise more?

To stop socialising so much because you’re nearly broke?

To climb Mount Everest and teach a group of mountain goats how to become a barber-shop quartet?

Well there’s good news and bad news.

The bad news is, you’re about as likely to succeed in ‘eating healthier’ or ‘exercising more’ as I would be if I was determined to become the new boxing heavyweight champion of the world and start calling myself Rocky Balboa.

The fact is, less than 10 per cent of new year resolutions are actually achieved, which is a pretty sobering statistic, isn’t it?

I know, I know, I’m being a major downer when the new year is supposed to be about happiness and hope and all that sickly, sweet, fluffy stuff.

I did say there was good news, too, I promise.

So, how do we succeed in accomplishing our new year resolutions?

Psychologist Susan Weinschenk

says, “There’s two main lines of brain and behaviour science that influence New Year’s resolutions: The science of habits and the science of self-stories.”

Usually, when we set goals for the new year, we’re talking about changing habits that are small, automatic, conditioned behaviours we have picked up over time.

In some instances, a number of small habits add up to create a pattern of behaviour that is larger than the sum of it’s parts, but nonetheless it’s still comprised of small habits.

So when we set a new year resolution like ‘I’m going to eat healthier’ we are attempting to alter multiple habits simultaneously.

In other words, we’re setting vague and extremely big goals without addressing the core behaviours, which is almost always doomed to fail.

For example, say you’re a slob at home and you want to become neater.

If you make the resolution that you’re going to tidy up every day and put everything away where it belongs after you use it, I can guarantee you’ll have the neatest, cleanest house ever - for one weekend.

But if instead you tell yourself you’re going to take off your shoes when you enter your house each day and put

them on the new shoe rack you just bought, you’ll have a much better chance of succeeding, and you won’t have to vacuum as often - which ‘lazy you’ loves.

Which brings us to the next point that of self stories.

It’s one thing to try and train your brain with a bunch of new habits, but if it goes against the core idea you have of yourself, you’re still going to struggle.

We rarely ponder it, but each of us has built up an idea of who we are, deep down.

Some of us love putting the work in to be neat and tidy - it’s who we are.

And some of us (not naming anyone) would much rather spend their spare time playing xbox.

But of course, eventually the housework needs to be done lest you want your visitors to think you are a professional mold farmer.

So for those lazier people among us, we’ll have a much better time sticking to our goals if we can add incentive to our new habits that matches our self story.

So while I might not become Rocky anytime soon, I can at least ride 10 kilometres on my spin bike while I play my favourite games.
