Exploring the roles of women WANGARATTA local Jodi Gibson released her third novel, Reinventing Emily Brown, on September 19. Ms Gibson said like other female writers, she’s always had a passion for writing and found having children really pushed her towards writing professionally. “I’ve always had story ideas in my head so I just took that and the time I had to start writing and it just took a hold of me and I haven’t really looked back,” she said.

“I haven’t stopped since then.” Her newest novel follows Emily Brown moving back to her childhood home with her 15-year-old daughter after finding herself broke, homeless and teetering on the edge of divorce. As her life unravels Emily realises she can either mourn her old life or rebuild her life in a reinvention of epic proportions. Ms Gibson said while

she’s had the idea for this novel for a while, she shelved Emily’s story many times as she had trouble doing it justice. “It was something I started probably six or seven years ago and it was just a seed of an idea and I probably got around 20,000 words into it and realised it wasn’t working so I set it aside,” she said. It wasn’t until she revisited the novel early last year that she found the story finally began to flow onto the page organically.
