WHEREVER Cameron Auty’s life has taken him, a deep love of history has been his constant companion.

Recently beginning work as the Burke Museum and Beechworth historic precinct and Indigo Heritage manager, Cameron said an affinity for the past has always been in his genes, having grown up in a family with a deep regard for the study of history.

During his studies at school he realised he was “more passionate about objects than history”.

This drew him into volunteering for, then working at, various museums and cultural organisations.

His career began volunteering at the Victorian Police Museum, where on his first day, he was fascinated to encounter one of the Kelly Gang’s armour suits.

Cameron recalls that this first encounter sparked his interest in cataloguing, researching, and caring for artefacts, and that being in the same room as a historical object is an intensely individual moment.

“It’s that moment of experience,” he said.

“Standing there, actually being in communion with that actual thing – that’s what will never change. Ŷ Continued page 3

$18 billion of super unclaimed The Austalian Taxation Office has announced its latest figures on lost and unclaimed superannuation accounts.

As at June 30, 2017, there are over 6.3 million lost and ATO-held super accounts with a total value of almost $18 billion.

The figures show that super funds are holding $14.12 billion of lost super, with a further $3.75 billion of unclaimed super held by the ATO. Assistant Commissioner Debbie Rawlings said the easiest way for people to keep track of their super, find lost or unclaimed super, or combine their accounts is by using ATO online services through myGov. “Over the past four financial years we’ve reunited 1.68 million accounts worth $8.12 billion with the account owner, and there’s plenty more to be found,” Ms Rawlings said.

“By using myGov to track down your super, the money will be transferred to your preferred fund, generally within three working days.

“More people are finding their lost and unclaimed super through our online services every year, but these figures show there are many people who still may not realise how quickly and easily they can check their super accounts.

“Once you have linked your myGov account to ATO online services, you will be able to view all your super account details, including any that have been lost or forgotten, and you can choose to claim or transfer your super online.

“Alternatively you can call the ATO Super Helpline on 13 10 20 to request direct claim or transfer paper forms, or speak to your super fund.

“People can lose contact with their super funds when they

change jobs, move house, or haven’t updated their details with their super fund.

“They may also lose track of their super from accounts established earlier in their career.

“While the number of people with multiple accounts has been falling, there are still almost 2.3 million Australians with three or more super accounts.

“You might choose to keep multiple accounts, but if you consolidate your multiple super accounts into the one you prefer, you’ll avoid paying multiple sets of fees and charges.

“If you’re not sure whether to consolidate your accounts, check with your super fund who can advise you on issues such as insurance that may be attached to your accounts.” Ms Rawlings said.

When is super considered to be ‘lost’?

The term ‘lost superannuation accounts’ is used to refer to accounts held by super funds where they have lost contact with the fund member.

By law, after a period, ‘lost super accounts’ and balances are transferred to the ATO and are then considered to be ‘unclaimed super’ held by the ATO. Unclaimed super For the first time, the ATO is publishing unclaimed super accounts, in addition to lost super accounts held by funds.

These accounts are held by the ATO where the fund is unable to contact the member or the member’s account has not received contributions for five years.

Accounts of this nature are transferred to ATO to protect the funds from ongoing fees.

Growing carrots WE all know home grown fruit and vegetables taste so much better than store bought.

High on my list of tasty home grown produce are carrots.

Freshly harvested, carrots are crunchy and so, so juicy.

They are easy to grow and can be grown year round in the north east for a continuous supply.

Botanically known as Daucus carota, carrots originated in Afghanistan.

The original wild carrots of Afghanistan were purple and were originally cultivated for their leaves and seeds.

The domestic carrot has been selectively bred over years for its greatly enlarged, more palatable, less woody-textured taproot.

Most carrots these days are commonly orange, but heirloom varieties available include purple, black, red, white, and yellow.

There are even purple carrots, with orange on the inside.

Most have long tap roots, but shorter and stumpy ball varieties are also available.

Carrots grow best in a crumbly, well drained soil.

Prepare the soil by digging the ground over thoroughly and deeply, removing any stones or rocks so

the long tap root can make its way easily into the soil.

If the soil is heavy clay, dig in some compost and sand to aid drainage.

Don’t add any fertiliser as this will promote leafy growth and can cause carrots to split or be distorted in shape.

Carrots should always be grown from seed sown directly into the ground.

They do not like to be transplanted so avoid buying seedlings in punnets as they are not very reliable.

Sow seed according to directions on the packet.

Mix seeds with sand or radish seeds to help space them out, the radishes will grow very quickly, long before the carrots are ready.

Seed tape is an easy way to plant carrot seeds.

Make a drill in the ground about 1cm deep and spread the tape along the drill.

Cover with a light layer of soil or sand and water in gently.

Don’t plant seeds too deeply as they won’t germinate.

Cover with a light layer of sugar cane mulch and keep moist until they germinate in 2-3 weeks.

Grain free pet diets CHOOSING the right food for your pet can be confusing. There are now so many to choose from.

To add to the confusion lately there has been an increasing trend towards grain free pet foods.

This has followed the popularity of grain free and gluten free products for people.

These diets are helpful for people who have celiac disease, gluten-intolerance, or allergies to wheat.

But is a grain free diet really the best choice for your dog?

Some pet owners who opt for grain-free foods believe grains are simply ďŹ llers in dog food to keep prices low with little to no nutritional value.

Some owners even believe grains to be the cause of food allergies.

We’d like to provide some balance to those opinions.

Should healthy pets be fed grain-free diets?

Not necessarily. The majority of dogs do very well on diets containing grain.

The higher ďŹ ber content of grain containing diets can be helpful, and whole grains such as corn provide dogs with important nutrients including protein, vitamin E, and linoleic acid.

Is it true that dogs can’t digest grains?

No. Dogs can easily digest grains.

So far, 10 genes have been identiďŹ ed that demonstrate the increased ability of domestic dogs to digest starch and fat relative to their wolf ancestors.

What about dogs with allergies?

Most allergies in dogs and cats tend to be to meat or dairy based proteins, so avoiding grain or gluten is unlikely to be helpful in these cases. Beef is the most common offender, responsible for 95% of food allergies in dogs.

Will feeding grain free diets hurt my dog?

Feeding your dog a grain free diet isn’t necessary, but as long as it is balanced, it won’t harm them either.

To determine whether a particular commercial dog food is balanced, look at the ďŹ ne print on the nutritional label to see check the food meets the AAFCO (Association of American Feed Control OfďŹ cials) guidelines.

Talk to your vet if you have any questions regarding your dog’s diet, or if you are worried your pet may have an allergy.

Since then, Cameron has had a varied career, including working at Museums Australia Victoria as well as spending time in Scotland, working in arts storage for the National Gallery of Scotland.

Working in Beechworth isn’t Cameron’s ďŹ rst connection to the region, however – he also spent time in Wangaratta earlier this year as part of his work with Museums Australia (Victoria) and the Victorian Collections program, which trains community museums to record and share their collections online.

He said they worked with many interesting pieces during that time, but uncovering an Italian ag captured at the Battle of El Alamein during World War II and signed by members of the Wan-

garatta 2nd/24th Battalion was especially rewarding. “There are some great objects out there,� he said. “All it takes is some passionate volunteers and some guidance.�

Jim Cozens from the Wangaratta RSL Sub-Branch said working with Cameron and colleague Frances Paterson was a rewarding and interesting experience for the organisation, adding that getting a handle on the memorabilia in the organisation’s possession would help them better exhibit the pieces in future and showcase them to the public, especially as the club prepares to relocate.

Cameron said he feels a drive to help communities tell their own stories through historical artefacts. “We keep these artefacts and help people relate to the modern world in a totally different way,� he said.

Working at the Burke Museum has intrigued Cameron for some time, and he is relishing the chance to work in the local history sector. “It was pretty exciting to come to a town and a shire with so much history and heritage,� he said, full of admiration for the ties Indigo Shire has between history and tourism. “There’s a whole lot of history, right there and in your face,� he said of the museum.

He said training museums and communities in disaster preparedness strategies for signiďŹ cant historical items was another passion, and he was involved in the cultural heritage organisation Blue Shield. “Objects from a community are so precious, because in some cases, that’s all that’s left from the past,â€? he said. “Objects tell stories on a human level and are a portal back to the past.â€?

CATCH OF THE WEEK

Snakes out and about on the river banks with ROB ALEXANDER, Wangaratta FOR any angler walking the streams and rivers fishing for trout at present, it’s just as important to pay as much attention to what’s on the banks as it is looking for fish.

We’re not the only one who have been making the most of the magnificent sunny spring weather to enjoy our surroundings.

It’s that time of the year again, when the King River turns into the Hississippi River as the banks come to life with tiger snakes.

In North East Victoria, we have three main species of snakes:

Eastern Brown snake: It is the most dangerous in the region. It has a bad reputation, but would prefer to flee than to have confrontation. If you see one, stay well back and give it time to get away.

Tiger snake: It has poor sensors, and is often unaware that people are around until it is almost stood on.

The subsequent knee-jerk reaction is a defensive strike, or lunge leading to it’s nasty reputation. In actual fact, the tiger snake is very timid and if it knows you are there, will do it’s best to find somewhere to hide from you.

Red Bellied Black snake: It is a very placid snake. It will flatten its neck out and look angry when it feels cornered or threatened, but has very good sensors and usually gets out of the way.

Another species is the Highland Copperhead. It is my favourite snake.

It is very placid by nature except on really hot days. The Highland Copperhead is the most cold tolerant

species of snake in Australia and is usually found in mountainous areas where it is often close to water looking for frogs.

All snakes will get out of your way if given the opportunity.

They are scared of us, as we are on average 50-70 times bigger than they are.

Once they can seek refuge in a crack, under a rock etc… they are not going to come back out and chase us.

If you see a snake, walk around it.

Don’t torment it, don’t try and kill it or catch it, just simply walk around it and ensure it has a means to escape if it notices you.

When walking the river banks, make lots of noise, stamp your feet, let the snakes know you are there and they will most often hide.

Never try to catch or kill a snake - that is when many people get bitten.

Keep your eyes open folks.

The fish was caught using camembert cheese, on the theory that the smelly cheese may attract trout cod better than mozzarella. The trout cod was subsequently released back into the water.

THIS DAY IN HISTORY 1871 DYNAMITE, or giant powder as it was sometimes called, was tested at Eldorado on October 18, 1871.

Method Measure the volume of the eggs in a measuring cup and pour into a mixing bowl.

Add the same volume of water to the eggs as well as the salt and gently whisk everything together.

Donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t beat the eggs too vigorously as you donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t want to incorporate too much air or create too much froth.

Once the mixture is well combined, pour through a ďŹ ne sieve into a wide shallow bowl.

Cover the bowl with cling ďŹ lm.

Prepare the steamer by bringing the water to a boil.

Reduce the heat to low and place the bowl with the

egg mixture into the steamer and cover with the lid.

Steam the egg mixture for 12-14 minutes or till the mixture has just set (it should wobble in the middle).

Whilst the egg mixture is cooking, place the garlic and oil in a small microwave proof bowl and heat it on high for 30 seconds.

Add the soy sauce and mix till well combined.

Remove the steamed egg from the steamer and spoon the sauce over the top before scattering the coriander leaves and spring onions on top.

Serve hot as part of a multi dish meal with rice.

Are ‘loot boxes’ creating next-gen gamblers?

THERE has been much ado about ‘loot boxes’ in video games over the past few weeks, and for very good reason.

For those who don’t play video games, ‘loot boxes’ are digital mystery boxes a player can open to receive random items that enhance their video game in a variety of ways that vary depending on the game in question.

In some instances, a player might open a box and receive a new character they can play as, a new in-game costume, or a host of cosmetic items that players can show off to other players.

In most instances, these items don’t affect gameplay and won’t impact a player’s ability to progress or compete in the game, but there are exceptions.

However, the impact on gameplay is not really the point of contention being raised by gamers.

Of more concern is the ‘loot box’ mechanic’s similarity to gambling, and the fact that many games that employ this system are readily

accessible to minors.

While games that include this mechanic almost always give these loot boxes to players for free at periodic intervals (after reaching the next level, for example), they are also available for purchase using real money.

And of course, the free boxes players receive are just a dangled carrot, incentivising them to purchase more boxes with real money.

Virtually every popular multiplayer AAA game in recent times has adopted this game mechanic in some form or fashion, from Activision-Blizzard’s ‘Overwatch’ to EA’s ‘Star Wars Battlefront 2’.

Even the predominantly single player game ‘Shadows of Mordor 2’ has a loot box system, a move that has come under scrutiny for it’s a apparently blatant attempt at cashgrabbing.

And a cash-grab it certainly is, with Activision Blizzard confirming during their Q4 2016 Earnings Call that the entire company, across Activision and Blizzard game titles,

made over $3.6 billion just from ingame content sale which include Call of Duty Points, Overwatch Loot Boxes, Hearthstone card packs and more, clearly demonstrating the enormous value these game mechanics have.

But at what cost?

That is the question concerned gamers are asking.

In an email response to the online video game blog Kotaku, a spokesperson for the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) stated that the board did not consider loot boxes to be gambling.

“While there’s an element of chance in these mechanics, the player is always guaranteed to receive in-game content (even if the player unfortunately receives something they don’t want). We think of it as a similar principle to collectible card games: Sometimes you’ll open a pack and get a brand new holographic card you’ve had your eye on for a while. But other times you’ll end up with a pack of cards you already have.” said the spokesperson,

in further clarification of the board’s position.

While it is true that the guaranteed ‘reward’ is a point of difference between loot boxes and pokie machines, the act of opening a loot box is very similar to gambling, and activates that same parts of our brains, according to Dr. Luke Clark, director at the Center for Gambling Research at the University of British Columbia.

“The player is basically working for reward by making a series of responses, but the rewards are delivered unpredictably,” Dr. Clark told PC Gamer recently.

“We know that the dopamine system, which is targeted by drugs of abuse, is also very interested in unpredictable rewards.

“Dopamine cells are most active when there is maximum uncertainty, and the dopamine system responds more to an uncertain reward than the same reward delivered on a predictable basis.”

Psychologists call this ‘variable rate reinforcement’ and it is a key

ingredient to gambling addiction.

So even if loot boxes aren’t gambling in the strictest sense of the word (an equivocation, at best, in my personal opinion) they are certainly training young minds to be more susceptible to gambling problems.

So where does our own government and the Australian Classification Board fall on this issue?

Predictably, the silence is deafening so far.

And if the past ignorance surrounding the R18+ rating for video games is anything to go by, (the long overdue rating finally came into effect in 2013) parents of minors exposed to these practices are going to have to fend for themselves for the foreseeable future.

While tackling the effects of pokie machines in licensed establishments within our community is certainly an important issue, it’s time we turned our attention to the far more advanced and seductive gambling ‘training programs’ present in our living rooms that are targeting our youth.

Heavenly choice of binge viewing Channel Chat SHOW: The Good Place CHANNEL: Netflix TIME: Streaming with KYLIE WILSON IMAGINE a world where you can get frozen desserts on every corner, you live in a house created exactly to your liking and you are instantly matched with your perfect soulmate.

That is the world Eleanor (Kristen Bell) finds herself suddenly in when she is informed she has died in an accident by the “architect” of The Good Place, Michael (Ted Danson), in the new situation comedy of the same name.

The only problem is that Eleanor realises she has been mistaken for someone else, and

she enlists her reluctant but accommodating soulmate, Chidi, to guide her and give her lessons in ethics in order to earn her place in this candy-coloured utopia.

I discovered this show recently on Netflix, and it is so watchable that I managed to get through the whole first season of half hour episodes in about a week (Netflix is now releasing second season episodes a week at a time, after they air in America).

Kristen Bell, whose work I have enjoyed for years, manages to make an initially selfish character lovable, and Ted Danson puts in some of his best work in years as the tightly wound, bow-tie clad Michael.

Also fun to watch is William Jackson Harper, who plays the nervous Chidi, and D’Arcy Carden, who inhabits the role of perky but all-knowing artificial intelligence, Janet.

As with many good comedies, it’s the little things that add to the comedy: from the Simpsons-like shops and restaurants with

BRIGHT AND SATIRICAL: Ted Danson and Kristen Bell star in The Good Place. hilarious pun names; to dropping random philosophy concepts into the plot; and one of my favourite touches, the characters not being able to swear in The Good Place, so Eleanor blurts out things like “fork” and “shirt” instead.

There is a lot more to this show than is obvious at first glance, and if you love smart, wacky comedy, I highly recommend you give The Good Place a try.

The Late Show with Stephen Colbert (Various weeknight late timeslots, TEN): Stephen Colbert continues to bring his A-game to his late night show with his incisive brand of wit and political commentary.

Harry (weekdays, 10.30am, GEM): I’ve had a soft spot for Harry Connick, Jr since I was young, and in this show he combines his talent for music with personable and entertaining interviews.
