MUSIC can entertain, it can evoke memories, and it can heal. For Mel Yeates, who divides her time between Bright and Mt Hotham, it is a way of life and a tool to raise much needed funds for awareness and research into mental health and cancer. Mel has become a familiar sight busking for charity around the Alpine Shire, making full use of her musical talents traced back to the recorder in primary school, learning piano for her HSC, and mastering the guitar. Over the years, struggles that she and her loved ones have faced have inspired her to become a committed fundraiser, through busking and organising events, for Beyond Blue and Love Your Sister. These efforts are set to culminate in her setting off on a trip fundraising around Australia later this year. For Mel, raising money for these causes is personal. She struggled with depression in year nine after two of her friends were killed in a freak accident while taking part in a Duke of Edinburgh hike. “I was absolutely devastated that two of my friends had died, and that another was injured,” she said. “Attending one funeral was pretty upsetting, but attending two on the one day was absolutely heartbreaking. “After that, I became really withdrawn, lost all my motivation to do anything, and also became really short tempered - even the smallest thing would make me mad or upset.” Mel had a hard time talking about her feelings, even with counsellors, and dealt with friends contemplating suicide. Two years ago a close family friend took their own life. continued page |
