WHILE the picturesque streets of Yackandandah may recall a distant, historic past, residents of the town have their eyes firmly fixed on the future. Since 2014, the town has been home to the volunteer-run Totally Renewable Yackandandah group, which has the aim of powering the town with 100 per cent renewable energy, and achieving energy sovereignty, by 2022. Group co-president, Matthew CharlesJones, said members are passionate about the possibilities of renewable energy for both homes and businesses. He said a number of renewable energy options were suited for Yackandandah, including solar, green purchasing and batteries. “The technology is changing very rapidly, making it more affordable,” Matthew said. The Yackandandah community is one of around 70 communities across Australia exploring similar concepts of energy and sustainability, with Hepburn Springs, for instance, embracing wind power, with a functioning community energy turbine. Matthew said residents of Yackandandah have embraced the ongoing trend towards renewable energy, seeing the benefits of not only cost savings, but also a reduction in carbon footprints and a greener, more sustainable lifestyle. He and his wife, who have lived in Yackandandah for about a decade, are committed to sustainable lifestyles in their own home as well. Their double glazed, passive solar home includes solar panels, composting toilets and more. “We now have a very comfortable home, and it’s very low cost,” Matthew said. continued page |

During rainfall, it is not only the water that penetrates the soil, but so does valuable nitrogen. This is intensified during electrical thunderstorms. The energy created when lightning discharges causes nitrogen in the atmosphere to combine with hydrogen, converting it into a usable form and deposits it in the water droplets which fall to the ground as rain. EVER noticed how green the lawn and garden looks after it rains? The plants look refreshed and full of new life. It seems that no matter how much or how often water is applied from the tap, it never looks as good as after rain. But water is water, right? No, there is a difference between tap water and rain water. If you live in town and have a municipal water supply, this water is treated with chemicals to control bacteria. Tap water contains salts, chlorine, fluoride and other chemical treatments that are harmful to plants. Chemical and salt residues can build up in the soil over time harming plants. This is often more evident in potted plants where a white haze can accumulate on the outside of the pot. Rainwater is free of these chemicals and contains vital nutrients. Sulphur, which is needed to form plant amino acids, is present in rainwater. It is collected during the evaporation and condensation cycle of rain formation. But the most beneficial component of rain is nitrogen. This is needed for the development of healthy green foliage. Although our atmosphere is around 79 per cent nitrogen, it is not in a form that plants can absorb.

Helping pets with stress MANY pets seem to take everything in their stride, but unfortunately some of our cats and dogs are worriers. Changes in their situation or environment can create temporary stress that can see your cat or dog quite upset. Examples of these changes include moving house, renovations, having relatives come to stay or even loved family members heading away on holiday or back to school or university in other towns. Different animals have different responses to these stresses. Some show obvious signs like moping around and looking sad, where others show more subtle signs like reduced appetite or abnormal behaviours. Cats in particular show their stress by behavioural change, usually involving inappropriate urination. These responses to stress can be frustrating for the pet owner and obviously upsetting for the pet. Unfortunately some pets feel stress everyday even unrelated to changes in their lives. Over the last few years some new products have been developed that help to keep
stressed pets calmer. They are centred around pheromones, which are chemical scents imperceptible to humans that have an effect on the more primitive parts of the brain. For dogs the pheromone used is the one produced around the mother’s teats when they are feeding pups. This helps to keep the puppies calm and make them feel safe. Even in adult dogs this scent still has the same effect on their brain and can bring calmness and a feeling of safety in stressful times. Collars, similar to flea collars, have been developed that release this pheromone slowly over a month to help reduce stress. Using one of these when you move house or know a disruptive time is approaching can help a worried dog deal better with the change. For cats the pheromone utilised is that produced by the glands in the cat’s lip. You have probably seen cats rubbing their face on objects around their territory, and what they are doing is marking out their borders. The scent helps make them feel safe in this territory.

If your pet is prone to stress with changes at home or they seem stressed a lot of the time it is worth talking to your veterinarian about strategies and products that can help them manage this stress better. Running a farm that grows sheep and olives, she said she sees the realities of climate change firsthand. “We see the changing weather patterns,” she said, believing some foods will have to be grown indoors because it’ll be too hot to grow them outside in the future. “It’s great to be involved with like minded people,” Ali said, committed to doing her part in creating a better environment for the next generation to inherit. “We’d be devastated to leave such a fiendish mess for everyone else to pick up.
“The world doesn’t have to be endless consumption and growth. “We have to be much smarter about the way we live generally.” Ali’s home also has a solar power system, and every drop of water comes from springs or her rainwater tanks. She also grows most of her own meat and food. “It’s great to be in a position to do that,” Ali said. Chasing trout in Lake Dartmouth ALL roads lead to Dartmouth Dam. There have been some good reports of people catching trout up there of late, which is not unusual for this time of year. Personally, I consider Lake Dartmouth to be the easiest trout fishery in the world when the trout are biting. All you have to do is cast your line out, put a blindfold on and troll around in circles until a trout commits suicide. It’s as easy as that. When the trout are not biting it can be a much harder lake to fish as you need to employ different tactics and techniques, but when the fish are biting like they are now it’s so easy that even Mr Magoo could catch trout.

RESTLESS: Sick children can get even more tired and run down with a persistent cough. Drop in the 100 per cent pure essential oils and mix. Pour into a 50gm glass jar. Place in the fridge or freezer to firm up. This is quite likely to melt at room temperature, so you might like to keep it in the fridge for preservation as well as staying semi-solid. IT seems like we spend the first half of our lives wishing it away as we look forward to major birthdays and events. Protecting your business from cyber attack THE next few weeks are going to be saturated by electioneering, so don’t drop the ball when it comes to cyber attack. Any business - or individual for that matter - that holds information is exposed to cyber attack. The reality of doing business in the computer age is that data breaches can and will happen – whether they are initiated within the organisation or from an outside source that has hacked into your files. Some research done last year offers the following advice: 1) reduce permissions on a workstation (ie application whitelisting); 2) set up auto-updates to implement security patches for your operating systems and applications; 3) set your anti-virus software to update hourly; 4) ensure your anti-virus software addresses viruses, Trojans,
spyware, key logging software and warns against suspect webpages; 5) have a process in place to regularly review and replace old computers and systems; 6) ensure your employees are vigilant about potential phishing emails; and 7) diminish the impact of a cyber attack with cyber liability insurance. I suppose like myself some of this language means little to a great majority of small business owners, so here are a few questions and answers which were given by the experts. Q: What is a “Phishing site” and what danger are they? A: These are sites that look exactly like a site that you may use eg your bank’s website. You think you are in the right place (eg please pay the debt you have with the Australian Tax Office which is
attached), log in and you are not at the bank anymore. Of course this too means that bad people have your username and password for your bank site. So they might be able to access your banking service although usually the banks are pretty much on top of that with physical keys etc. What’s interesting too though is that often your username and password are used everywhere else (because who has the time to remember all those passwords) so with that they will try your credentials on other websites too. Q: We have been told that our wireless modem incorporates a firewall and so a further firewall in our internet security system is not needed. Is that likely to be true? A: No, it does not sound likely to be true. You certainly need antivirus. Q: Is it dangerous to use

Dropbox and Logmein as these require some sort of access to our computers. A: It will depend who puts files into your dropbox. Email is probably the bigger question and vector of issues coming in. If a lot of employees have access to dropbox, then yes, and then of course if your files are copied elsewhere that’s a problem. Q: My email service is provided by Optus and they filter out a great deal of spam before it gets to my computer. Is this filtering likely to be protected from viruses as well? A: Yes, it is protecting you from some viruses but not all. You need two layers, one at the firewall/ cloud service provider and one at the workstation. There are many local businesses in the computer field that would be glad to assist you with your requirements.
