by KYLIE WILSON EVEN if you’ve looked at something a thousand times, it can be illuminating and inspiring to introduce others to it and see how they see it.

This is part of the appeal of the Instameets that have been part of the annual Bright Autumn Festival for the past few years.

Among those who run and participate in the Instameets is Brendan Holland, who is not only the president of the Bright Autumn Festival, but also runs Bright Mystic Valley Holiday Units with wife Ros and runs the business’ Instagram account under the handle @brightmystic.

He will be joined in running the meets by those running the @brightandsurrounds and @brightbeerjames Instagram accounts.

Brendan said that his love for sharing images on social media has grown incrementally over the years, after being initially inspired by discussions in business workshops run by Alpine Shire.

He has run the @brightmystic Instagram since July 2014, and said he loved the constant challenge of finding new and interesting images of the Bright area.

“It gives you a good excuse to explore your area,” he said. Ŷ Continued page 3

AMONGST the giant London Plane Trees that dominate the King George V Gardens in Wangaratta, the observant plant enthusiast will spot some rare and fascinating Australian rainforest trees.

Two of interest are a large, Castanospermum australe [Black Bean] growing adjacent to Rowan Street, and a slender tree of exceptional beauty - the Firewheel Tree [Stenocarpus sinuatus].

This grows alongside a transecting path leading from the children’s playground to Ovens Street.

Look up!

From February to May, you will be delighted with large, orange-red wagon wheels glowing in profusion among lobed glossy deep green leaves.

Firewheel trees are native to NSW and Queensland.

They grow well in our district, are great bird-attractors and make a lovely garden specimen.

Although they may reach 30 metres in their native habitat, in cultivation they are slow-growing, and may attain five metres in about 12 – 15 years.

They are a popular street tree in Australia, and are planted extensively in USA and parts of Europe.

A Firewheel Tree would be a delightful feature or shade tree in your garden.

Established plants are available from local nurseries.

Choose a position in full sun or part shade.

More rapid establishment can be aided by mulching with well-rotted compost and the addition of a low-phosphorus fertilizer.

Keep well-watered during dry times, but, once established, they will tolerate dry periods.

They can be lightly pruned to encourage a pleasing shape.

Protect from severe frost until established.

Seed-grown plants will flower in about 6–7 years.

Like many rainforest trees, flowers may emerge from the trunk and bare stems as well as from previous year’s growth.

The 14-spoke wagon-wheel flowers appear from February, lasting until late May. Clusters of seed capsules which follow the flowering period are large, solid and boat-shaped.

They hold a profusion of papery seeds.

Our garden specimens are 14 years old and are about four metres high.

We propagated our specimens from locally collected seed.

Horses: sand colic in autumn COLIC, including sand colic in horses can occur at any time of year, but autumn can be a particularly prevalent time.

As the months get cooler and rainfall starts to increase we see a ush of fresh green growth.

Pasture with short coverage and poor root supply increases the chances of sand being pulled up and ingested whilst horses are grazing.

As sand builds up in the gastrointestinal tract of the horse signs of colic will start to occur.

These signs can be subtle such as a reluctance to eat, tail swishing, looking at the anks and kicking at the belly or more dramatic such as lying down, constantly getting up and down or rolling.

What should you do if you suspect sand colic? ĆşÇ?DĂżÇ?ŨĭőğÇ?ċĭğŀÍÇ?ÄŽĹ€Ç?ĂŠĂĄĹ‡ÄŽĹœĂŤÄ&#x;ŨÇ?ĂĄÄ­Ä&#x;ÄŽĂĄÄœĹ¨ĆźÇ? call a veterinarian! Medical attention of these cases is required! ĆşÇ? ĂŤÄ ÄŽÄ§Ç? Capturing the essence of Bright Ĺś From page 1 Some of Brendan’s images have been shared by larger tourism organisations and attracted many followers to his account. “There’s lots of reasons to come to the North East,â€? he said. “There’s a sense of history around the area.â€?

Brendan sees sharing images as a valuable tool to attract visitors and beneďŹ t the local tourism industry as a whole. “I’m happy if people are coming up to the region,â€? he said.

Brendan uses whatever camera equipment he has at hand to create his images, capturing images with everything from a Sony SLR to his trusty LG smartphone, or even his handy compact camera. “You use what you’ve got,� he said.

With his favourite photography spot being Mt Buffalo, particularly around the Cresta Valley area, Brendan said he loves spotting the small changes in the landscape every time he goes there.

He said he has continued to work on his photography skills over the

years – he initially began working with the form as a way to get better photos of his business – and said he is always learning, and is looking forward to his next challenge – experimenting with drone photography.

Brendan is looking forward to the upcoming Instameet, saying it is a great way for everyone involved to meet new people and look at their photography in a new way, as well as being a valuable way of marketing the region. “You see them all engaging with each other,� he said.

James Davidson from Bright Brewery sees the Bright Instameets as a fun way to catch up with photographers of all levels and capture stunning high country vistas and colours, “Whether you use a high-end professional camera or, like me, just your phoneâ€?. “We also use the Instameets to learn from each other in terms of taking better photos, ďŹ nding the best locations and how to get the most out of Instagram,â€? he said. “The more people who come along, the more we can showcase our

stunning alpine region to the world.�

William Jeremy from Alpine Shire Council said, “Instagram is the perfect medium to show off the picturesque valleys as it’s all about imagesâ€?. “The Bright & Surrounds Instagram account has grown to 7500 followers since opening the page in July 2014,â€? he said. “The images we display are from people who tag us or use the hashtags, #myrtleford #mtbeauty #harrietville or #lovebright. “We always credit the photographers. “Instameets are an opportunity to bring together amateur and professional photographers and show them locations within Bright & Surrounds they would not ďŹ nd without a little local knowledge.â€?

The Instameet will run throughout Bright and surrounds in various locations on the weekend of April 27-29.

Cool change will bring out the trout

with ROB ALEXANDER, Wangaratta Cody Young from Kyneton and his cousin fished there last week and only managed a few smaller fish on bladed spinners, but are looking forward to going back and giving it another go really soon.

Reports from Lake Mulwala have been all over the shop. I have had some great reports, and also some quite poor reports.

As with a lot of Murray cod fishing,

Lake Mulwala seems to be quite hit and miss at the moment.

Close to Wangaratta in the Ovens and King Rivers it is a very similar story with red hot fishing one night, then dead the next and then red hot again a few days later.

Only time will tell what impact this weather change will have on that pattern, but with the little rainfall we received I am expecting the waterways to all remain clear and looking great.

After the weather change, everything has cooled right down, including the water temperatures.

Now is a fantastic time of the year to target trout in the streams.

As the Murray cod and redfin fishing becomes inconsistent during autumn, the trout fishing goes the other way and becomes the stand out.

LAST WEEK’S SOLUTION

ANOTHER week of very good fishing has passed us by in North East Victoria. I wonder if the weekends cold front and weather change will bring a halt to the amazing fishing we are experiencing?

Over the last week I have had some good reports of trout being caught in the Ovens River upstream of Bright, as well as the Mitta Mitta River upstream of Eskdale.

In both cases trout were caught on small minnow style lures with the larger average size coming from the Mitta Mitta River.

The Ovens River seems to be producing a lot of rainbow trout at the moment.

Lake Buffalo continues to be hit and miss, with the general report being that the redfin fishing has slowed right down up there.

◆ FIND A BALANCE: There is nothing wrong with being committed to fitness and health, but make sure you find a balance between commitments and take time to smell the roses.

The commitment marathon COMMITMENT can be looked at in two different ways.

THIS DAY IN HISTORY 1975 ONE of the most eye catching buildings in the North East opened on April 18, 1975.

Benalla’s lakeside art gallery was inspired by a gallery in Denver, Colorado in the USA. Construction of the new gallery, and work to dam the Broken River to produce a lake proceeded, and the official opening took place with the Premier, Rupert Hamer, officiating.

Mushrooms and ancient grain salad THIS highly nutritious salad serves 4-6 people and can be made fairly quickly and easily if you are looking to have people around for a light lunch.

Method: Cook the grain blend according to packet instruction, then drain, set aside and cool.

Meanwhile, heat 1 tbsp oil in a large frying pan over medium-high heat.

Cook the mushrooms for five minutes or until golden and cooked.

Season with salt and pepper.

Turn off the heat and allow to cool.

Meanwhile, combine the lemon zest and juice with the onion in a large bowl.

Add the remaining oil, cooled grain blend, mush-

rooms, coriander and pine nuts and toss to combine.

Season well with salt and pepper.

If using, top with the feta to serve.

The brilliant inventions of ancient China CHINA was one of the most innovative civilisations of the ancient world when it came to ameliorating onerous daily necessities, and many of their inventions have stood the test of time, even to this day.

Perhaps even more surprising is the fact that many technologies developed by the Chinese predate their contemporary counterparts by centuries, and in some cases, over a millenia.

This week we’re taking a look at ancient Chinese civilisation, and some of the important technologies that emerged from dynasties that date back thousands of years ago.

Alcohol The people of the Arabian peninsula were largely believed to be the first brewers, but the discovery of trace amounts of alcohol in pottery from Henan Province, dating back to 9000 B.C. - the time of the neolithic period - means that prehistoric Chinese beat the Arabians by 1000 years in mastering the fine art of getting sozzled.

Alcohol is known as Jiu in Chinese and is often used in spiritual

offerings to heaven, earth and ancestors.

Cast Iron Archaeological evidence revealed that iron smelting technology was developed in China as early as 5th century BC in the Zhou Dynasty (1050 BC - 256 B.C).

During The Spring & Autumn and Warring States periods (776-221 B.C.) China went into a flourishing period for iron smelting.

In the Han Dynasty (202 B.C. - 220 A.D.) central government monopolized the iron smelting, seeing remarkable development.

Due to it’s brittle nature, the earliest tools and implements made of iron were not weapons or tools used for striking, but rather pots and containers.

Ancient Chinese metalwork stands out out against other civilisations from the same time period due to the intricate patterns and fine craftsmanship.

Blast Furnace While cast iron tools had seen widespread use in China for centuries, the invention of the blast furnace in the first century A.D. took metal working to the next level.

Built during the Han dynasty, these early furnaces had clay walls and used phosphorus-containing minerals as a flux.

The effectiveness of the Chinese blast furnace was enhanced during this period by the engineer Du Shi (c.

AD 31), who applied the power of waterwheels to piston-bellows in forging cast iron.

Compass The compass was invented by Chinese between the 2nd century B.C. and 1st century A.D. It was first developed and used for the purpose of Feng Shui - the art of laying out buildings and furnishings to allow for the flow of qi (ch’i).

These first compasses were made using lodestone, a mineral magnetite the is a natural magnet.

By 1000 AD, navigational compasses were commonly used on Chinese ships, enabling them to navigate.

It’s widely believed that Arab traders sailing to China might have learned of the technology and brought it to the West.

Paper Paper was derived from the word Papyrus (a similar technology developed in ancient Egypt), which

was invented in ancient China around 105 A.D during the reign of Han Emperor Ho-DI. It is believed that the inventor of paper was Ts’ai Lun (or Chai Lun), an official of the Imperial Court.

However, recent archeological survey indicates that the paper was already invented 200 years earlier, and was used by the ancient Chinese military.

Ts’ai Lun used the bark of mulberry tree in fiber and pounded them into a sheet.

Later, he discovered that the quality of the paper could be improved by adding rags hemp and old fish nets to the pulp.

Soon, paper became the new mode of writing.

Over the few years of the invention of the paper, it was widely in use all over the China.

Later, the paper was carried out throughout the world via the Silk Road.

Interestingly, paper was first used for the purpose of wrapping and protecting delicate goods, not writing.

Movable type printing That’s right, even the newspaper

you’re reading this article in owes its origin to ancient Chinese innovation.

Woodblock printing was already a widely used technique in the Tang Dynasty.

However, this kind of printing tech was expensive and time-consuming.

Until - during the Song Dynasty (960 A.D. -1279 A.D. ) - a man named Bi Sheng invented movable type printing, making it quicker and easier.

He first carved individual characters on pieces of clay and then harden them with fire.

These movable type pieces were later glued to an iron plate to print a page and then broken up and redistributed for another page.

This kind of printing tech rapidly spread across Europe, leading up to the Renaissance, and later all around the world.

The list of Chinese inventions that have shaped the modern world is huge, and I encourage you to take a look if you get the chance.

At the very least, spare a thought and give thanks to the brilliant ancient Chinese inventors who brought so many modern day conveniences to us all.

Bachelor in Paradise is a spin-off series from The Bachelor that is appearing on Australian TV for the first time as an adaptation of the U.S version that premiered in 2014.

Osher Günsberg returns to host the antics of 30 contestants as they form relationships and alliances on the beaches of Fiji.

As a strong lover of past dramatics of the

bachelor and bachelorette series, Bachelor in Paradise is proving to be no less exciting, shocking, and is producing a lot more eyerolls and frustrated sighs on my part.

Each week, there is an uneven number of men to women, meaning a rose ceremony sends someone, or many people, back into the real world who don’t receive a rose.

The motives behind some contestants are quick to pick up, if they form relationships purely to get a rose and stay in the game, or if there are genuine connections between contestants.

As everyone will be, I’m already invested in a pairing that seemed unlikely at the beginning of the show, but is now giving me hope.

A past favourite from Matty J’s season; Tara Pavlovic, has formed a strong connection with Sophie Monk’s season contestant; Sam Cochrane, bringing laughs, comedy and joy to the screen.

I’m very excited to keep watching.
