DURING his youth in the Melbourne suburb of Noble Park, Cam Buchanan looked to be heading down a well worn path of gangs, crime and aggression, like so many boys his age. A difficult childhood had left him hostile and antisocial, and when he was at school, he felt “heavily misunderstood” by his teachers. But thanks to the caring and help of some members of a Dandenong church, he and wife Jen have spent years working with youth all over Australia to change their lives for the better. “My life changed when I got into a church environment,” he said. Beginning with learning life skills and anger management, he thrived, and as he started to take more control of his life, he started thinking about serving the community and helping to fulfil the needs of others. He met Jen at a pub in Frankston, and said that when they met they were from two different worlds. But they soon realised they had in common a passion for helping others. He began working at a church in Frankston as a youth pastor, and said it was a steep learning curve, from working with young people who had admitted to suicidal thoughts, to teens with drug problems. continued page |
