WITH nothing but the open road, a good dose of stamina and their trusty bikes, hundreds of people from near and far take to the open roads around the Alpine Shire and beyond each year as part of the Audax Alpine Classic Ride. The event has been a highlight on cyclists’ calendars since 1986 and has evolved and grown rapidly in that time. Among the regular riders is Mt Beauty woman Kim McKeown. She first started entering the event in 2008, tackling the 130km route, and almost every year since, she has cycled the 200km route. A former Melbourne resident, Ms McKeown has been an avid cyclist for many years, and was a regular road cyclist during her time in Melbourne. With the Audax Alpine Classic featuring many steep climbs among the local mountains, she said participating in the event had “ridiculous appeal” and had “a whole different dimension of challenge”. Originally tackling the event on her own, Ms McKeown said she now regularly rides alongside friends as well as making friends on the ride, and said she loved the event for the conversations and social fun, and the “absolutely stunning” scenery does not hurt either. She said a drive for continual selfimprovement brought her back to the race each year. “I always want to be better every year,” she said. “I still love doing the audax, the camaraderie is fantastic and you see everybody.” Wangaratta man Pete Wadley is a relative newcomer to the event, with this year being his second Audax Alpine Classic, but he has become hooked on the challenges of the ride. He can be found most weeks riding around the Warby Range and Glenrowan, or doing training rides around Bright, and he said he loved tackling longer rides and hills. continued page |
