AS an Australian teenager growing up in the 1970s, the lightning fast moves and action packed films of Bruce Lee captivated Tony Gibb. Martial arts were all the rage at the time, and as a smaller than average teenager, he got involved in a taekwondo course to learn self defence at just 16. And he has not looked back since. His dedication to taekwondo recently saw him notch up 30 years teaching the discipline in Wangaratta and district. “It’s virtually been my life,” Tony said, the sound of his class going through their paces rhythmically echoing behind him like a metronome. And he smiles when he speaks about the positive impact his work has had on the lives of his students of all ages, some of whom have competed at Australian champion level. “Quite a few parents train with their kids, and it’s good for both of them,” he said. “It’s also good for their general wellbeing, balance, coordination and fitness. “You can see someone that is quite shy, and they gain self confidence and good social skills. “It’s also good when you’re teaching someone, and all of a sudden they get (a move) and start to develop their technique. continued page |
