Colourful view of the world

By KYLIE WILSON BEHIND the vibrant colours and colourful brush strokes of the works of Beechworth’s Valerie Crosse lie a fascination with colour, movement, and her environment.

A keen painter since childhood, she remembers first honing her craft painting in an art studio every Friday afternoon and building her skills.

A resident of the North East for the past 30 years – as well as being an experienced yoga teacher - Valerie said she is inspired by her environment when it comes to her work, as well as by travel.

“Both my parents were world travellers,” she said, and it has given her “a 360 degree view of the world”.

“I’ve always been fascinated by different cultures.”

Valerie said she is inspired by the countryside and surroundings of the North East.

“There’s so many attractive landscapes and vegetation,” she said, noting that Beechworth and the North East also had a rich, diverse and vibrant artistic and creative community.

Valeries’s latest exhibition, Out of the Blue, is being held as part of the upcoming Spring Arts Festival, from October 26-November 25, with the exhibition itself running the entire length of the festival.

Are you missing out on a tax refund?

HUNDREDS of thousands of Australians may be missing out on a tax refund this tax time. Last year, the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) identified around 200,000 taxpayers who failed to lodge tax returns even though they were likely to have received a refund.

Assistant Commissioner Kath Anderson said many salary and wage earners end up with a tax refund.

But some are missing out on their money because they haven’t lodged.

“Unfortunately, the tax office can’t return your money until you lodge a tax return,” she said.

“We estimate there are 200,000 individual salary and wage earners who are likely to have been either due a refund or owed a small amount of tax, but who had not lodged a tax return.

“Collectively, these clients have millions of dollars of unclaimed refunds.

“There are a few reasons why Australian’s might not lodge even if they are due a refund.

“Some might not lodge because they don’t realise they need to – maybe they are on a low income or haven’t worked recently.

“Others might be worried about lodging because they haven’t lodged for several years, which often causes them stress and anxiety.

“The key thing to remember is that the ATO is here to help; we want all taxpayers to get it right, and we will assist them to do so,” Ms Anderson said.

If you haven’t lodged yet, you have until October 31 to either lodge your own return, or ensure you are on your agent’s books.

Ms Anderson said some taxpayers may delay lodging their tax return when they expect they may have a debt.

“We know some people put off lodging because they think they’ll owe money, but for selfpreparers the payment is due on November 21, whether or not a return is lodged,” Ms Anderson said.

“The ATO will help people who may have difficulties paying a tax debt, and work with you to tailor a payment plan to your circumstances.

“Some taxpayers may even be able to set up a payment plan online depending on their circumstances.”

For those taxpayers who are entitled to a refund, most returns are processed in less than two weeks. Over 98 per cent of refunds this year have issued within 12 business days.

However, mistakes in a return may cause delays.

I WAS first introduced to the Silver Daisy Bush (olearia pannosa), a spectacular, low, spreading daisy, by friends from The Daisy Patch.

This ‘Patch’ is a delightful dryland garden which was developed by John and Julie Barrie on a low-rainfall, stony, windswept block at Coonalpyn, South Australia.

In my garden, olearia pannosa thrives with little attention.

The foliage is attractive featuring evergreen dark green shiny lanceolate leaves with a furry silver lining are not affected by frost or burning sun.

In recent times a significant roadside colony was destroyed by roadmaking machinery.

It is unusual to come across O. pannosa growing in the wild in Victoria.

Small populations exist on northfacing, shallow, rocky soils in a few isolated locations in central Victoria. Most of these small populations have low seed set and consequently very few seedlings result.

Its survival from extinction has been prioritized for support by the Federal Government’s Threatened Species Strategy.

Some plants may be up to 100 years old.

The tuberous roots of O. pannosa may have provided a valuable water and food resource for the Australian Indigenous population.

If you are seeking a tough, easy-tocare-for small perennial, with attractive foliage and large, bright white daisy flowers, then a Silver Daisy Bush is a great choice.

Plants may be available from specialist nurseries.

O. pannosa can be propagated from cuttings.

Seed can be sown in autumn into seed-raising mix and kept moist but not over-wet.

Canine cognitive dysfunction AS dogs age, some may develop signs similar to a person with Alzheimer’s disease or dementia. The foods have high levels of omega 3 fatty acids, this helps to protect the brain from free radical damage and also helps with inammation.

Spring Arts coordinator Daren Pope said the event’s program featured events to delight art lovers from all walks of life, and the town has had a rich history of attracting creative and artistic people.

This will be underlined during the festival with guided art walks that will inform people of some of the promient artists, scientists, explorers and administrators whose lives and careers intersected with Beechworth after the discovery of gold. “Beechworth attracted a whole lot of really prominent artists,� Daren said, notable among them artist and teacher Eugen von Guerard, prominent cartoonist and illustrator Nicholas Chevalier and police officer and explorer Robert O’Hara Burke, just to name a few.

Daren said the ongoing growth of Spring Arts was something that those involved in the Beechworth Arts Council took pride in. “It’s going from strength to strength,� he said. “Spring is an ideal time to celebrate creativity,� he said, explaining that the Beechworth Arts Council and Spring Arts organisers saw themselves as facilitators and an umbrella for a range of arts related activities. “We’re trying to establish really strong links with other community groups,� said Daren, who is working on his PhD on the role of regional artistic communities. “We want to create an awareness of the value of community arts.�

Speaking about Valerie’s work, Daren said “landscape really is the language of Indigo�.

Out of the Blue will be held at the Christ Church at 29 Ford Street, Beechworth, from 9am-5pm seven days a week during the Spring Arts Festival (exhibition access depending on church service times).

Long term arts council member Chris Dormer, who is coordinating a festival project of small sculptural works enti-

tled O is for Object, said that the sculptures will showcase a wide variety of talent from throughout the region.

The sculptures can be seen during the festival at Beechworth Library, the local WAW branch and various shopfronts in town. “It’s a fantastic opportunity for local artists to show their work in Beechworth,� Chris said, encouraging art lovers from near and far to take in the sculpture exhibits, as well as the variety of activities taking place during the festival.

Spring Arts features a wide range of activities and exhibition throughout its run, including open studios, the Elements of Indigo project where artists have been encouraged to explore expressions of place and identity and create works which reveal elements of the region, a ower show of spring colour called Fresh Bloom, members of Opera Scholars Australia in concert performing La Primavera, a series of baroque arias, and more.

Warmer weather improves fishing

with Rob Alexander WANGARATTA I ďŹ shed Lake Kerford on the weekend and only managed two redďŹ n, both okay ďŹ sh of around 25cm.

Not monsters, but not tiny either - it was only two but itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a start.

I also ďŹ shed a number of tributaries of the Ovens River on Saturday afternoon where I found the trout ďŹ shing was a little patchy however it seemed better than it has been lately.

I actually sighted quite a few ďŹ sh on this trip however many of them were reluctant to strike my lure.

Last weekend I had the privilege on ďŹ shing and doing some PR work with Laura Stahl from NSW Roads and Maritime Service.

Laura is a boating educator and travels around much of NSW educating people on boat safety.

While talking all about boat safety we, the team, managed to catch six European carp just bait ďŹ shing with worms.

Laura may or may not have caught all six of them while I watched.

Pretty much every bit of water that has carp in it is worth ďŹ shing at the moment because they are biting like crazy in the warming waters across the region.

THIS warmer weather is doing wonderful things to the ďŹ shing right across the south east corner of the country at the moment.

Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s quite a few yellowbelly being caught, the redďŹ n are starting to move, thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s great carp ďŹ shing for those that enjoy it and there even appears to be an improvement in the trout ďŹ shing across the region.

Yellowbelly have been caught in Lake Nillahcootie using yabbies as bait.

They have also been caught in Lake Eildon and Lake Hume on trolled medium sized lures and cast lipless crankbaits such as Jackall TN60.

Theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re not being caught in huge numbers yet but the yellowbelly ďŹ shing has well and truly started and is only getting better as the weather warms up.

Steps you can take if you think stress is the contributing to your physical symptoms: 1. See your naturopath to determine if stress is the cause of your physical symptoms.

2. Identify what is contributing to your stress levels – can you change anything?

Amulet Wines 2017 Sangiovese Rosé OUR salami this year got off to a promising start but fell over just before the finish line.

It looked the part, smelt good and even felt right, but towards the end its fast and sudden weight loss was a sign that something had gone wrong.

Not all was lost and thankfully a small batch checked earlier proved interesting and quite tasty, if a little on the chewy side.

I’m still not sure yet whether to try again, or whether it’s a sign to ‘stick to your knitting’ and make friends with people in the know so you can enjoy the fruits of someone else’s labour.

The charcuterie board ended up topped with good deli favourites and accompanied with a glass of Amulet Wines Sangiovese Rosé.

It has a light, quite orange amber colour and a savoury cherry bouquet with some rose-like florals, which hint at its dry style.

with Anita McPherson The cherry flavour is enhanced by a little oak spice, but it’s crisp and tight with refreshing mineral acidity.

Winemaker Ben Clifton says the fruit for the Rosé is picked a little earlier than for making red wine, to capture that acidity.

It’s also a cool ferment to retain greater fruit character.

This wine is food friendly and can be enjoyed lightly chilled with a lunch that involves someone else’s charcuterie, roast pork or perhaps a pan fried duck breast.

This Day in History, 1890 AN enormous crowd welcomed the special train inaugurating the rail service to Bright on October 17, 1890.

The train drew into the town amid the crashing of exploding detonators and the cheers of the crowd.

Method: Preheat oven to 170°C. Line a large flat tray with baking paper.

Pulse nuts and seeds briefly in a food processor to finely chop.

Half of Australian businesses restructuring to keep up with changing business needs HALF (52 per cent) of employers are currently restructuring their organisation or department to keep up with changing business needs, says recruiting experts Hays.

Of these, the key drivers are a change in the required skill sets (48 per cent), digital transformation (31 per cent), a requirement for a more ďŹ&#x201A;exible workforce (27 per cent), a merger or acquisition (19 per cent) and downsizing (13 per cent).

The Bronze Age - a kick start to civilisation being vastly sturdier, and, subsequently, far more versatile - it allowed for the manufacture of sharper arms and armaments that kept their durability for longer periods.

It was also resistant to salt water corrosion, making it extremely useful in the creation of stronger ships and boats for both militaristic and mercantile purposes.

And it had a relatively low casting temperature, making it easier to fashion intricate objects such as sculptures, small implements, jewellery, and building materials.

Bronze was integrated into, and improved almost all of the building blocks of civilisation, which is why it holds such a place of importance in human history.

What is Bronze?

Bronze, as we think of it today, is an alloy comprised of 90

percent copper (Cu) and 10 percent tin (Sn), however the very first items made from bronze (dating back as far as 5000 BCE) were created with a different composition.

These first items were cast from native copper which contains arsenic (As).

As chemistry aficionados would be able to tell us, the melting down of copper containing arsenic would have created extremely toxic fumes which would have killed intrepid metallurgists very quickly if inhaled.

Unsurprisingly, then, arsenicbronze items were quite rare, and not exactly the type of innovation to build civilisations upon.

It isn’t known who first concocted the idea of replacing arsenic with tin, but this composition was safe to melt and cast, and it’s application became widespread in a relatively short span of time.

A new kind of wealth In the Neolithic Age, people’s wealth was measured in agricultural produce and textiles.

Such possessions could be hoarded to an extent but they were still largely transient and had an expiry - crops would foul, livestock would die, clothing would rip and deteriorate.

With the advent of the Bronze Age, and new more permanent kind of wealth came to the fore - metal.

Metals could be displayed and worn, and they didn’t expire.

If a metal item did wear down, it could be melted down and crafted into a new item.

While the Bronze Age is signified by the use of tin and copper to form the alloy, the more significant development was that of the trade of this increasingly commonplace

metal between societies.

The rise of cities and civilisations In the areas surrounding the Aegean and Mediterranean seas the Bronze Age lasted around 2000 years.

Bronze and other metals helped to fuel the rise of the first true cities.

In the early Bronze Age, generally settlements weren’t much larger than groups of about 150 to 200 people in townships that spanned, on average, around two acres.

These towns likely comprised of close knit tribes who traded and cooperated with one other, trading skills to aid each other and go about their daily tasks.

By the Middle Bronze Age, these townships had expanded, and saw the rise of leaders who extracted the surplus through taxes, storing

it and controlling it.

Then finally, in the late Bronze Age, people began moving into larger cities such as the ancient Greek cities Knossos, Mycenae and Crete, which, at their height, likely had populations of around 15,000 people.

By this stage, civilisation had become quite sophisticated cities had sewer systems, running water, and, perhaps most importantly, international trade of bronze, precious metals and various other commodities.

And all of it possible thanks, in large part, to a few bright individuals who worked how how to combine tin and copper to make bronze.

IT will be interesting to see how the Australian tv viewing public warms to the new ABC drama Pine Gap. And considering the current Federal Government’s open fear and loathing of Auntie, it will also be extremely interesting how they view it too.

Sadly, many of our elected representatives have trouble separating truth (global warming) and fantasy (clean coal)

and they might not realise this Pine Gap is a pure work of fiction.

The production qualities are superb as is the cast and you wouldn’t believe it is filmed in a studio and not the real Pine Gap defence facility in South Australia.

The plot explores the socalled strong alliance between Australia and the United States but, as in real life, it’s not all

roses and chocolates.

A shocking secret will also bring the world to the brink of destruction; not bad for a little Aussie spy facility that has been protested against since it was built.

An impeccable source reveals there are 800 plus employees at the CIA complex which is jointly run by Australian spooks so it’s surprising noone else has thought of using it for a television series.

The cast list is impeccable led by Parker Sawyers, Jacqueline McKenzie, Tess Haubrich, Stephen Curry, Steve Toussaint, Mark Leonard Winter and Sachin Joab.

The series began with the detection of a missile being aimed somewhere in Asia, far too close to where the US President happens to be at that moment.

THIS WEEK’S TV HIGHLIGHTS: The Orville (SBS, Monday, 9pm): This comedic but respectful homage to Star Trek does for sci-fi what Brooklyn 911 does to police drama.

The Bachelorette (TEN, most nights, 7.30pm) Just joking. Let’s hope this version of the abysmal dating program ends in the same disappointing and nonsensical fashion as its testosterone charged predecessor. ◆ SO ADULT: Australia’s very own spy drama Pine Gap features one helluva cast.

Gus still has time for an affair with an Australian spy of Serbian background, Jasmina Delic (Haubrich), even as his boss Ethan (Toussaint) is telling him not to trust the Australians, who are more intent on covering their own backsides than

uncovering the truth.

This is good looking and fun and far more appealing than the competition in this disappointing timeslot that features so-called current affairs programs, repeats or reality tv.

Let’s hope Alan Jones likes it so it’s not pulled before the series can end.
