DINNER Plain resident Malcolm McPherson counts himself lucky to live among the beautiful bushland, distinctive architecture and panoramic views of the village he makes his home. He feels so at home there that he has literally written the book on the place – a recently released volume that outlines 30 years of the village’s recent history since its official opening in 1986. The book, known as Dinner Plain: History of the Alpine Village, was recently launched at a reception in the village. Malcolm has spent his career in the mining and energy industries, including working as an exploration geochemist and in managerial and directorial roles. He said he was drawn to the area because of the community and alpine lifestyle. Owning land in the area for some 20 years, and living at Dinner Plain for the past decade since he ceased working full time, it is a place where he could not be happier. “My first impression (in 1996) was of how well the buildings fitted into the natural environment,” said Malcolm, an avid skier. “I love the close knit community, where we know each other and help out when necessary. “At the same time, we welcome the thousands of visitors during the snow season.” Malcolm said he was happy to help celebrate the 30th anniversary of Dinner Plain, known as Australia’s highest freehold village (much of the recorded history of the area dates back to the gold claims and early settlements of the mid-1800s). “I admire the perseverance of the pioneer graziers and gold miners during droughts, fires and their isolation,” he said. continued page |
