IN the past few years Des Flanagan has gone from treading the boards in school plays to making his mark on Ramsay Street in the Aussie soap opera Neighbours – and he is loving the creative life. He has many happy memories of his local childhood, from his school days at Galen Catholic College, playing endless games of downball in the schoolyard, to being active in football, tennis and hockey in Wangaratta and Beechworth. “There aren’t many memories that don’t consist of sport, performing, friends and the family property,” he said. Des explained he has enjoyed using his imagination since he was a small child - always dressing up and play acting with family and friends. “I used to recreate my favourite scenes from films like Lord of the Rings,” he enthused. “I always wanted to dance, and didn’t start until I was in year 11. “I was the only boy in the class with five other girls, two of whom were my sisters.” Des said a trip to see theatre in Melbourne in year eight, as well as encouragement of his teachers, including drama teacher Julie Nolan, ignited his passion for theatre and acting. “I was lucky it (theatre show) was Wicked, and lucky enough that Julie Nolan put me on one of the last seats of the bus down to Melbourne,” he recalled. “Galen had a great performing arts culture that I had to be a part of. “I just wanted to stand on those stages. “Thankfully, I had the right people around always pushing me in this direction, because I didn’t always think it was for me.” After completing VCE at Galen Des spent three years studying at the Victorian College of the Arts (VCA), earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Musical Theatre) degree and performing in many shows. continued page |

ATO approach to dealing with super guarantee non-compliance THE Australian Taxation Office (ATO) recognises the importance of the Superannuation Guarantee (SG) to the community and its vital role in providing for people’s retirement. Deputy Commissioner James O’Halloran said that while the vast majority of the $85.7 billion paid in superannuation each year is paid voluntarily by employers, there are reports of noncompliance from employees. “In 2015-16 we undertook around 21,000 cases that addressed SG non-compliance, raising $670 million in SG, including penalties, from a range of reviews and audits� Mr O’Halloran said. “Since 2010-11 we have transferred almost $2 billion in SG entitlements to employee’s super funds as a result of ATO action.� Mr O’Halloran said the ATO receives roughly 20,000 reports each year from people who believe their employer has not paid SG. “We have over 150 staff focused specifically on SG compliance. “We examine every report of non-compliance and followup with the employer and if necessary undertake audits and apply penalties,� Mr O’Halloran said. “We also have an additional 300
staff who review SG compliance in conjunction with Pay As You Go Withholding Tax audits targeted across a range of industries, regional areas and individual circumstances to address noncompliant behaviour.� In addition to investigating all reports of non-compliance made to us, the ATO undertakes a range of compliance activities to detect and deal with noncompliance “This includes analysing our data to detect patterns in nonpayment, identifying high-risk industries, and taking firm action with employers who do not cooperate with requests to ensure employee entitlements are paid on time,� Mr O’Halloran said. “Third-party referrals from intermediaries such as super funds, employee associations, other government agencies and tax professionals are additional sources of information for compliance action.� If an employee believes their employer is not paying SG they should report their employer through the ATO’s online tool or by calling 13 10 20. Their website also has calculators and guidance to help employees determine whether they are being paid enough SG.
Magnificent Bromeliads BROMELIADS are colourful foliage plants that come in a wonderful variety of sizes, shapes and foliage colours. They are easy to grow, requiring very little care and feature brilliant, long lasting blooms and ornamental foliage that grow in a natural rosette shape. They grow in a wide range of climates and conditions, indoors and out, in pots or in the garden. Originating in North America and Argentina, Bromeliads are members of the Bromeliaceae family with over 2700 species. The most well-known Bromeliad is the common pineapple, Ananas comosus. Most Bromeliads are epiphytes; plants that live on other plants, and cling to the forks of trees, or other structures, surviving mainly on the moisture and nutrients they obtain from the air. Many Bromeliads have very colourful floral leaves or bracts which colour more vibrantly when the plants are flowering. They only flower once in a lifetime, with the flower stalk emerging from the centre of the rosette. The flowers will last for at least six months. The flowering season depends on the age of the Bromeliad and not the time of the year. After flowering, the plants start to die back but produce offsets or pups which can be removed when large enough, around 15cm in size, and established as new plants. To remove them, cut them away from the mother plant with a sharp knife and then plant them in a well-draining medium. Bromeliads grow well in shallow pots in a low soil medium. Orchid mix is ideal. They also grow well in the garden, in a welldraining soil with plenty of added compost. The leaves hold water, so keep the central

The harder leaf varieties tolerate more direct sunlight, but can experience leaf burn if exposed to too much direct light. Feline lungworm LUNGWORM is one of many conditions that may cause your cat to cough or have difficulty breathing. It is caused by the parasitic worm aelurostrongylus abstrusus, which is found commonly around the world. The immature stages (larvae) of this worm are found in snails, slugs, rodents, birds and reptiles. Your cat can become infected when it hunts and then eats these small creatures. The condition is most common in cats that are observed to hunt although any outdoor cats can become infected, as the larvae can also be present in contaminated water sources. The larvae migrate from the intestinal tract to the lung where they then mature. The adult lungworm lives in the small airways of the lungs causing irritation leading to a chronic cough and difficulty breathing normally. As the disease progresses cats can have a reduced appetite and weight loss.
Lungworm infection may be suspected by a veterinarian based on the cat’s history and findings of the clinical exam. Treatment involves the administration of particular antiparasitic drugs such as selamectin or moxidectin. In severe cases affected cats may also require treatment with anti-inflammatories to reduce inflammation in the airways. The prognosis for cats affected by lungworm is very good with timely treatment. As there are many conditions that can cause your cat to cough, a thorough clinical exam should be performed by a veterinarian to assess your cats overall health prior to commencing any treatment. “I did a number of shows there, like ‘42nd Street’, ‘Guys and Dolls’, an Australian piece ‘The Hatpin’ and ‘Spring Awakening’ for my final production,” he said. “As it was between 30 and 50 hours a week it was gruelling and gritty but the struggle is what made it enjoyable and worth it. “I was very fortunate to have got in to the course.” As luck would have it, a Neighbours casting agent saw him in his graduation showcase, and this chance encounter led to a successful audition for his latest – and most high profile role to date - a brief guest role in the show as a Canadian backpacker known as “T-Bone”.

His run of episodes aired in late April and early May, and Des said “being in the environment of Neighbours was thrilling and impressive”. He said that unlike theatre, where cast rehearse for weeks or months, television scripts are received a week before and are shot relatively quickly, “but all the while, cast and crew were having a great time”. With upcoming jobs including touring with a children’s musical in Sydney later this year, Des looks forward to his next acting challenge as he balances constant auditions with part-time work. “I’m currently living in Melbourne, and living the life of a performer,” he said, passionate about being in Australian work.

Location: JUST LOVELY: A trout cod I caught on a Koolabung Cod Cracker surface lure last week. There’s still a few cod willing to hit a lure at the moment. Trout cod are a protected species and must be returned to the water, as this one was.
Fishing still hit and miss LAST week I wrote about how slow the Murray cod fishing has become around North East Victoria in recent weeks due to the cooler weather. Ironically, I then went out the next day and caught a lovely trout cod, and lost another one, in the Ovens River. That’s the nature of Murray cod fishing in autumn…very hit and miss. I also had a report of eight cod, made up of half Murray cod and half trout cod, being caught in the Ovens River at Myrtleford on a combination of spinnerbaits during the day and surface lures after sunset. So the cod fishing is not over

in North East Victoria just yet… although it is very hit and miss. Lake Mulwala has continued to tick over nicely with some nice Murray cod being caught. Local dietitian Daniel Thomson from Yarrawonga landed what he called “104cm of amazingness” on a lure in the lake last week. Downstream of Lake Mulwala there have been some large Murray cod caught on all forms of cod

lures, as well as a small number of yellowbelly. I have had a report of a few redfin being caught in Lake William Hovell. There were not a lot of fish caught, but enough to keep the kids happy just casting spinners off the bank. The trout fishing across the region is also a little bit hit and miss at the moment, which is typical of trout fishing in streams at this time of the year. I have had a couple of great reports of trout being caught in the Mitta Mitta River upstream of Eskdale, with bright orange bladed spinners delivering the best results.

A WAVE of cyber-attacks in the form of ransomware have swept the globe, with more than 75,000 detections in 99 countries, according to Jakub Kroustek of the security firm Avast. Most notably, the UK’s National Health Service was crippled by the attack, with services in many parts of the country hit, leading to some operations being cancelled and patients turned away from accident and emergency departments. The ransomware, known as ‘WannaCry’ exploits a flaw in Microsoft software that was detailed by the NSA in documents stolen and leaked publicly by a criminal hacker group known as the ‘Shadow Brokers’. ‘WannaCry’ typically infects networks via a fake email that is opened by a user which immediately downloads the malicious software. Once the software is downloaded, it begins to encrypt all files on the computer or network leaving a user with only two files - the WannaCry software, and instructions on how to pay the ransom of roughly $400 AU.
HELD HOSTAGE: Ransomware will hold your files hostage and hackers will demand you pay in order to retrieve them. Users are given a few days to pay the ransom in bitcoins (the online cryptocurrency) or the ransom doubles, with a warning that the files will be deleted if payment is not made soon. A spokesman for Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has stated that there have been no confirmed reports that Australian organisations have been impacted at this stage, although given the speed and brute force scale of the attack it seems likely to hit our shores. Microsoft released an update
for their software in March that fixed the potential breach - prior to the Shadow Broker’s leaking documents in April - but with many organisation’s networks running older versions of Windows the rollout of this update was sporadic and patchy at best. Microsoft have since released an update for older versions of Windows - including the ‘retired’ Windows XP - in order to stem the global flood of the ransomware, and users are advised to update their systems as soon as possible.

How to protect yourself against ransomware attacks The best method of protection against ransomware attacks is to backup all files on a completely separate system. If your computer or network is hacked, so long as you have a backup, you won’t lose any files. While it is difficult to prevent determined hackers, being vigilant while opening emails or navigating the web is one of the best defenses. If you see any emails that look suspicious or are from an unknown
sender, delete them without opening. Additionally, legitimate and up-todate antivirus software can also help prevent attacks. What to do if you become a victim of ransomware Ransomware will ask you to pay a fee, either via credit card or bitcoins. It probably goes without saying, but do not - ever - pay the fee. Your files aren’t likely to be unlocked if you pay, nor will it resolve the issue even if they are. Instead, it’s best to contact a computer network and repair specialist.
