STANDING in a hospital corridor unsure of the fate of a loved one who is critically ill, is one of the most traumatic feelings a person can experience.

And no one appreciates this more than those working in the front lines of health care, whether they be medical or pastoral staff.

Angela Van Der Leeuw, pastoral care coordinator at Northeast Health Wangaratta, draws great satisfaction for helping people.

She entered her profession after her husband, David, aged 38, died of cancer in 2001.

“The care we received then led to wanting to help people walk through that,” she said.

And while she helps people every day, she said her job is really a two way street.

“The people we are ministering to, minister back to us,” she said.

“We receive a lot from them…they teach us about life, death, living and relationships.”

Angela’s work can range from short chats in a hospital corridor to advocacy, supporting people through code blue situations and deaths.

“My aim is always about creating a safe space,” she said, adding that while her work can have a religious element, her support is always tailored to the individual person.

“We go in with a blank canvas, and that person is our focus.

“It’s up to them what they want to explore.

“The human spirit is incredibly resilient and it never ceases to amaze me how quickly it can adapt to the most tragic situations.”

What’s in your garden: We have a mix of vegetables for all seasons; fruit trees ie plums, nectarines, citrus and apples; herbs, roses and a variety of bulbs and perennial shrubs.

All of our garden has easy access and surrounds our outdoor living area. We have an ornamental grape vine on a pergola on the north/east side of our hose for summer shade.

In the front garden we have planted a low maintenance native garden.

We also have a variety of potted plants and ceramic art to add interest to the gardens and outdoor area.

What do you enjoy about gardening: The pleasure of planting and then seeing things grow and to have plants that provide us with produce, also to be able to pick flowers from the garden.

We started the garden four years ago and as the garden grows, we love watching the bird life appear in the garden, as well as watching the seasonal changes from inside and outside.

We love all aspects of our garden.

Lastly, having very good neighbours who look after our garden when we go away.

Sitting on our deck or outdoor area and being surrounded by the shaded trees and the garden, or inside looking out from our living, kitchen or dining room into the garden, whatever the season.

Water saving/ conservation tip: We have a dripper watering system on manual timers and lots of mulch.

Your tips to keep gardens in top shape: Constantly monitoring progress and the needs of the plants, feeding and fertilising as needed.

Good pruning, especially of the fruit trees, which is expertly done by Peter and rotating vegetable planting areas from year to year.

This can be prevented by painting the trunk with white acrylic paint in spring.

In the veggie garden, tomatoes, capsicum, eggplant, zucchini, cucumber, watermelon and rockmelon are particularly susceptible to sunburn.

Fruits with a high water content, like tomatoes, can literally cook on the vine.

Spray plants with Drought shield to protect the foliage.

It’s sunscreen for plants which gives leaves a protective layer and increases the survival of plants during hot dry times.

Another option is to provide some shade, especially in the afternoon.

Drape some shadecloth or material over a frame or stakes or make use of an old beach umbrella.

Even cardboard can be placed over plants to shade them.

Keep plants well-watered, early morning or late evening are the best times to water.

FEBRUARY is traditionally the hottest month of the year, with long sunny days and high temperatures.

While we seek relief in the shade or indoors with air conditioning, our gardens can suffer with the extreme conditions.

Even with regular and increased watering, plants can stress under the blistering sun and hot dry winds resulting in sunburnt leaves, fruit, branches and even trunks.

Sunburn occurs when the temperature heats up quickly or there are a number of hot days in a row and the plants’ roots are unable to supply water to the foliage as rapidly as it is lost by transpiration from the leaves.

As the outer layers of plant tissue burn under the UV rays, they can develop white, yellow or brown areas.

Browning of leaf margins and yellowing or darkening between the veins of the leaves are symptoms of sunburn.

These will eventually become brown and crisp.

Usually the leaves will remain attached but in extreme cases the plant may drop some of the leaves or fruit.

Don’t be tempted to remove sun damaged leaves, stems or fruit, keep them to provide some protection for anything growing underneath.

Some trees are susceptible to sunburn, especially citrus varieties.

Cruciate ligament injuries CRUCIATE ligament rupture is a common injury in professional athletes, but did you also know it is the leading causes of hindlimb lameness in dogs?

The knee joint, also called the stifle, is held together by several large ligaments including the cruciate ligaments which are important in providing joint stability.

There are a few different ways that the ligament can become damaged, either suddenly through excessive twisting, of hyperextension of the joint or more slowly through degeneration of the ligament over time.

Dogs may have either a complete or partial tear of the cruciate ligament and there is often concurrent injuries to the joint such as cartilage damage.

Affected dogs will have a hindlimb lameness and may or may not be weight bearing following the injury.

Sometimes the lameness improves only to flare up again following exercise.

To diagnose the condition your vet will assess the stability of the joint, attempting to get a ‘drawer sign’ which indicates that the ligament is damaged.

Sometimes when they are painful, dogs will tense the muscles in this region making it very difficult to accurately assess the joint, in such cases an anaesthetic may be required to permit a thorough examination.

The treatment of cruciate injuries is dependent on the size, age and activity level of the dog.

Surgery is the treatment of choice in most cases and is designed to increase joint stability.

There are a range of surgical techniques available, each with their own benefits and pitfalls and selection of technique is made on a case by case basis.

In the interim cruciate

injuries are managed with antiinflammatory pain relief and rest.

Some small or inactive dogs may be managed like this longer term, however, the damaged cruciate ligament is unable to repair itself unlike many other tissues in the body.

Left untreated the instability in the joint causes an earlier onset of osteoarthritis which itself can be a debilitating condition.

He said helping family and friends however he could was as essential as patient care.

“You’re hitting people at the most vulnerable time,” he said.

“For some of those people, their entire life has changed within a six or 12 hour period.

“We try to get everyone involved and focus on the person in the bed.”

While the job can be intense, Dan said he approached his work with a happy frame of mind.

“I try to add a little bit of humour into the shift when I can,” he said.

“It’s also a coping mechanism.”

He thought little of it until five years later when he nursed the same lady, who surprised him by asking after his son.

“You can have that much impact on a person,” Dan said.

He’d always like to be the bearer of good news, but sadly sometimes the situation is going to be bad, and honesty is the best policy.

Often he helps transition patients towards end of life or palliative care, and said approaches to death have become more holistic and matter of fact in the past few years.

STILL OUT THERE: A nice Murray cod caught in the King River on the weekend. The “player comfort level” is about to get a whole lot better as things start to cool down.

Late summer cod fishing IT’S not too late to catch a Murray cod across North East Victoria at the moment.

The cod fishing tends to slow down a bit throughout autumn and becomes quite hot and cold.

This pattern is more common in the natural flowing rivers like the Ovens and Kiewa rivers, whereas the Murray River and Lake Mulwala usually fish very well right throughout most of autumn.

For now, let’s focus on the rivers.

As the days get shorter, and cooler, the water begins to cool down and the cod tend to feed less frequently.

Their metabolism slows, leaving them feeling less hungry.

They still have to eat, but do not eat as often.

Longer periods between eating, means less chance of “intercepting” one when it is feeding actively.

They will often hold off feeding until conditions are right – so look for periods of stable weather.

Several days of stable weather leading up to a cool change can be good times to fish, particularly the day before the change arrives and drops the barometer.

A high barometer is always a good starting point.

SUDOKU HARD

The old saying “1020 cod aplenty” rings true at a time of the year when the cod are just starting to get fussy.

All of the same techniques that we use during the height of summer will still work - Spinnerbaits, hard body lures, surface lures etc.

As we get further into autumn we will need to make a few changes to our lure selections but for now the same lures will work, and so too will the same baits that we use during summer.

Provided we do not get too much rain, the next four weeks or so should see perfect conditions, with a slight slowing of the cod fishing, but nothing too drastic.

The cod fishing is not finished yet... not by a long shot.

Method 1. Line the base and sides of a 38cm x 25cm Swiss roll pan with a single sheet of baking paper, allowing a slight overhang.

2. Beat egg whites until soft peaks form.

Gradually add sugar beating well between each addition. Sift cornflour over the egg whites and, using a metal spoon, fold through with the vinegar and rosewater. Spread evenly into prepared pan and bake at 170°C for 20-25 minutes until golden and cooked. Cool in pan for 30 minutes.

3. Lay a clean towel on the bench, cover with a sheet of baking paper and dust evenly with icing sugar and cocoa. Invert meringue onto paper and carefully remove the top sheet of paper, cool completely.

4. Beat cream, extra icing sugar and vanilla bean paste until soft peaks form. Spread over meringue and top with raspberries and chocolate. Roll up along the short side and place on a serving platter, seam side down before chilling for 1 hour. Serve with extra berries and chocolate.

To me, it’s my grandmother’s freshly baked fruit cake, rich and warm, a little bit savoury underneath and packed full of booze soaked fruit, but with the zing of candied peel.

Apparently it’s also reminiscent of Turkish Delight, and as the Chambers family has been making wine at Rosewood for over six generations, I’ll happily take their word for it.

What I do know is it’s moreish and a little bit addictive, and gets a round of applause when you serve it after dinner with a wheel of blue-tinged brie.

Games are so much more fun when everyone wins.

Fires and drought, 1983 THE Ash Wednesday bushfires dominated the news on February 17, 1983 , and many district people and fire units were away fighting the fires.

In Wangaratta, the Ovens River had almost ceased to flow, and the Water Trust was considering introducing Stage 3 regulations.

IN some research I was reading last week I came across an article pertaining to how long you need to be in Australia to retain all your benefits.

Presently if you were born overseas, you can retain your pension for a period of absence of 26 weeks.

If the government has its way, commencing on January 1, 2017, if you have not lived in Australia for 35 years, then you will find your pension slashed after six weeks.

Although it was in last year’s budget it has not yet passed through Parliament.

It is intended to save a measly $168 million over four years – about what our parliamentarians spend on travel in a year.

I have many friends from other countries and have heard their stories of being at Bonegilla and walking into Wodonga looking for a job.

One man told me how he lived in a humpy until he accumulated enough money to build a shack in among the tobacco plants.

Those who came more than 35 years ago deserve every bit of encouragement to pass on their knowledge to younger

generations and it disturbs me to hear a spokesman for Social Services Minister Christian Porter saying the change was about making things “fairer for taxpayers”.

The Federation of Ethnic Communities Council chairman Joe Caputo said pensioners born overseas often needed to travel overseas for extended periods to stay in touch with family, or to care for a sick or dying relative.

In some cases, they had never been back to their country of birth and were going on the “trip of a lifetime”.

While I agree that a person’s retirement costs should be fairly distributed between the countries a person has worked in, some of the European countries are in such turmoil they are not even able to

look after their own residents.

The Refugee Council of Australia has cautioned refugees are not necessarily eligible for pensions in other countries - given they had fled to Australia because of persecution, often by the government.

There is a little bit of light at the end of the tunnel with Labor set to oppose the change in Parliament, with the opposition’s Jenny Macklin (a former Wangaratta girl) noting it will hurt “thousands of migrant pensioners, who have worked hard all their lives. They deserve our support in their retirement”.

With an election coming up this year it probably will not hurt if you make approaches to our local hopefuls and put them in the picture.
