by ANITA McPHERSON A COLLECTION of intriguing items which provide an insight into Wangaratta’s rich history and the characters who called it home has been brought together as part of an extended exhibition at the Wangaratta Visitor Information Centre. Wangaratta Stories was brought together over 12 months with the assistance of Museums Australia Victoria through its Roving Curator program. It was Wangaratta Historical Society volunteer Helen Al Helwani and Wangaratta Art Gallery director Simone Nolan who initially applied to be part of the program, which off fers only four successful applicants each year the chance to utilise the services of a professional curator to develop and present an exhibition in their region. Roving Curator Kitty Owens came to town to make herself familiar with the society’s extensive collection, including its many thousands of photographs, negatives and priceless memorabilia. With expert eyes, she was able to bring together a colourful and character-filled snapshot of Wangaratta based around five themes, including the Bpangerang, the Ovens River, War, Playtime and Made in Wangaratta.
