A SPECIAL kind of determination is needed for athletes wishing to tackle the demanding world of obstacle course racing. And with Bright’s first ever Spartan race event weekend fast approaching, two such athletes are Wandiligong resident and physical trainer Matt Murphy and Porepunkah fitness enthusiast and mother of three Leanne Anders. Mr Murphy, who has competed in Spartan and other obstacle course races all over the world, moved to Wandiligong last year from Terrigal for a quieter lifestyle. “It’s pretty cool that they chose to come to Bright,” Mr Murphy said, describing Spartan races as being “on a whole other level”. Mr Murphy estimates he has competed in obstacle course races in 10-15 countries worldwide, with one of his proudest moments placing second in the world at a global Spartan event in Vermont, USA in 2013. He said he was looking forward to experiencing the local course along with like minded people and said it would challenge the stamina of racers. “The environment the event is run in is truly next level,” he said. “There will be solid climbs, and beautiful scenery.” Mr Murphy, who has been training a number of athletes in the area to compete in the race via Bright Boot Camp, said that he was passionate about competing in obstacle course races because they challenged his athleticism, stamina and mental toughness. “It’s just different to a running race,” he said. “And it’s a big form of escapism for a lot of people. continued page |
