A SPECIAL kind of determination is needed for athletes wishing to tackle the demanding world of obstacle course racing.

And with Bright’s first ever Spartan race event weekend fast approaching, two such athletes are Wandiligong resident and physical trainer Matt Murphy and Porepunkah fitness enthusiast and mother of three Leanne Anders.

Mr Murphy, who has competed in Spartan and other obstacle course races all over the world, moved to Wandiligong last year from Terrigal for a quieter lifestyle.

“It’s pretty cool that they chose to come to Bright,” Mr Murphy said, describing Spartan races as being “on a whole other level”.

Mr Murphy estimates he has competed in obstacle course races in 10-15 countries worldwide, with one of his proudest moments placing second in the world at a global Spartan event in Vermont, USA in 2013.

He said he was looking forward to experiencing the local course along with like minded people and said it would challenge the stamina of racers.

“The environment the event is run in is truly next level,” he said.

“There will be solid climbs, and beautiful scenery.”

Mr Murphy, who has been training a number of athletes in the area to compete in the race via Bright Boot Camp, said that he was passionate about competing in obstacle course races because they challenged his athleticism, stamina and mental toughness.

“It’s just different to a running race,” he said.

“And it’s a big form of escapism for a lot of people. continued page |

Internet shopping: avoiding identity theft and fraud WITH more and more people doing at least some of their seasonal shopping online, hackers and cyber criminals use this as an opportunity to strike.

A large number of consumers experience payment fraud.

Many online shops and their clients are still not aware of simple safety protocols as the world goes deeper into all-digital age.

Online stores are huge sites of targeted attacks by hackers who try to steal users’ financial details and then use it for money laundering or other schemes.

There have been too many cases where an innocent user was tricked into believing that they were entering the credit card details on a secure online store while in reality the user was providing their details to a hacker who can then use them to empty someone’s entire life savings.

There are many ways online shopping can become hazardous to any user.

For example, a shopping website may be a spoofed fraudulent website set up by hackers to steal data.

Or the online store where one shops may not be using a secure encryption protocol to ensure that their customers’ details are safe during the payment process.

Or a customer’s account on the shopping site may get compromised, giving the hacker access to the account.

In order to stay safe when shopping online, there are simple tips everyone should know about.

Veggie garden update DUE to the unseasonal winter and spring rains, planting out the spring veggie patch was delayed this year.

Not because I didn’t want to get wet, but because the soil was extremely waterlogged and impossible to work.

Normally I plant the first of the spring and summer vegetables on AFL Grand final day, unless Geelong is playing.

A few weeks before planting the soil is carefully prepared.

The weeds are removed and the soil is dug over.

Manure, dynamic lifter, compost and blood and bone are then dug through and the soil raked.

It is then left for a week before turning the soil over again and raking level.

The rain and time waiting for the soil to dry out put planting behind schedule.

I finally planted out the salad vegetable range of pre-sown seed mats

by Mr Fothergill’s three weeks ago.

This has beetroot, carrot, lettuce, spring onion and radish.

This makes gardening so easy. Lay the mat on the prepared ground and cover lightly with soil, then water in gently.

Wait a week and seeds start sprouting.

growing and nearly 100 per cent germination.

They have been watered regularly and fed with Seasol and Powerfeed fortnightly.

Last evening was the first harvest of radish and picking lettuce.

A week ago, sugar snap peas were planted to grow up the trellis, along with more seeds of radish, carrots, parsnip, beetroot, salad onion and iceberg lettuce for repeat cropping.

All are available as seed tape.

Sugarcane mulch was then added to conserve water and keep the emerging seedlings moist.

The remaining section of garden has been prepared ready for the frost tender plants like tomatoes, cucumbers, rock melon and watermelon.

These will be planted over the weekend, weather permitting.

With rain forecast, it may be done in between showers.

To help with pollination and to help deter pests, marigolds, lavender and basil are also planted in the veggie beds and at the base of the passionfruit vines.

These were cut back savagely this year, fertilised and are now putting on lots of fresh growth.

Microchip information ALL cats and dogs registered with a council for the first time must be microchipped prior to registration.

A microchip is a tiny computer chip about the size of a grain of rice, which has an identification number programmed into it.

The microchip is inert, has no battery, uses no energy and will last for your pet’s whole life.

When your pet comes in for microchipping, the procedure is simple and painless.

The microchip is injected under the animal’s skin between the shoulder blades.

To identify the animal, a scanner is passed over their skin and it reads the microchip number.

The scanned number can then be checked against a register, which provides details of the animal’s ownership.

It is the responsibility of

the implanter to send the application form (containing all the required information) to a licensed registry.

Owners of newly microchipped animals will receive a certificate of identification from the licensed registry where the information is kept.

It is important to check the information on the certificate and make sure it is accurate.

In future, if your residential or contact details change, it is vital that you as the pet owner update the information on the microchip registry.

Unfortunately, we are unable to do this on your behalf at the vet clinic.

If you have recently welcomed a new, microchipped dog into your family, make sure you organise for the registration details to be changed into your name as soon as possible.

If you don’t, the animal legally won’t belong to you, and it will be very hard to get them out of a pound if they end up there.

One of those who has been training with Mr Murphy, Leanne Anders, balances work at a local chiropractic firm with health coaching, athletic training, motherhood and studying nutrition, and said she is also taking part in the race as a way to raise money for local organisation North East Support and Action for Youth (NESAY).

Mrs Anders said she has had a drive to give something back to NESAY ever since she received support from the organisation during her teenage years, and she also wanted to be an example of working to achieve a goal for others. “I’ve always been active, but this is definitely a new challenge,� she said. “I’ve learned so much about myself as well. “I wanted to show that when you prepare yourself and do the hard work, you can perform under these pressures. “Quitting’s not an option. “I want youth to see that you can

achieve anything. “And I’m in a position now to give back,� she said of raising funds for NESAY. Her training has included two days a week of training, including conditioning, speed and hill work, and Mrs Anders said many people had supported her.

Bright’s Spartan Race Trifecta weekend is taking place on November 26-27, with a variety of races and range of race distances between 7km and 42km, as well as shorter junior Spartan races for younger competitors to get involved.

Race organisers are keen to hear from volunteers to help run the race including helping to create a safe but fun experience for racegoers, enforcing obstacle rules, assisting the medical team and more.

Volunteers receive a number of benefits, including free race entries based on seven hours of volunteering and can find out more by emailing volunteer@ spartanrace.com.au.

NICE TO EAT: This is a decent sized redfin by Lake Kerford’s standards caught by Jesse Rickard on a Strike Tiger soft plastic last week. The moment Jesse caught this fish I had a Rick Springfield moment “You know I wish that I had Jesse’s fish….where can I find a redfin like that”.

Trout still biting, redfin firing up THE trout are still biting very well across the region at the moment.

I fished a small tributary of the King River with my mate Andrew Schulz last week where we managed to catch seven or eight trout.

I did notice a slowing down pattern with the fishing from the week before.

Some pools that held trout last week seemed to have been vacated this week.

I observed a clear shift in the trouts’ behaviour, and think that the water must be warming to that point where the trout usually begin to move upstream in search of cooler water, or move to the deeper holes to seek refuge for the summer months.

This is typical trout behaviour which usually occurs in October.

The trout will still bite, however, different techniques and strategies may need to be used as they begin to get a bit fussy and harder to catch.

This is also when they begin to lose their condition and start to become a bit skinny as they tend to feed less often.

This is only just beginning to happen in rural streams that bake in the sun.

Mountain streams and larger rivers

will still fish very well for quite a while yet.

In fact I had a terrific report from the Mitta Mitta River on Sunday of some nice sized trout, including one very large brown trout that I have seen the photo of being caught upstream of Eskdale.

The redfin are starting to fire up around the region too.

One afternoon last week I had the absolute privilege of sharing a waterway with Jesse Rickard.

We only fished together at Lake Kerford for a short time as I had to leave, but we had a lot of fun and caught a few redfin including one decent sized fish caught by Jesse on a Strike Tiger curl tail grub soft plastic.

Are you low in iron?

IF you are dragging your body around, breathless with simple exercise, have brittle hair and nails, pale complexion and poor memory, you may have iron deficiency.

SOME 280 Australians develop diabetes every day, or one every five minutes.

Many of these people arenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t aware they even have diabetes or arenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t managing their condition, which puts them at significant risk of complications such as loss of eyesight, heart disease and kidney failure.

But whether you have diabetes or are at risk of developing the condition, the key to preventing long-term complications is to control your blood glucose so it falls within a healthy range, and consuming legumes is a good way to do it.

A scientific review of 41 research trials found that people who ate legumes, especially as part of a high fibre or low GI diet, improved their long-term blood glucose control to a similar extent as those on a course of medication intended for this purpose.

Method Heat oil in a large heavy based saucepan over medium-high heat and brown mince.

Add onion, carrot, and celery and cook for 5 minutes or until starting to soften.

Add garlic, lentils, passata, oregano and stock.

Cover and simmer for 20 minutes or until flavour has developed and sauce has thickened.

Add spinach, lemon juice and freshly cracked pepper.

Bring a large covered saucepan of water to the boil, add spaghetti, stir once and cook uncovered for the amount of time specified on the pack.

Drain pasta.

The dark, crimson drop has a really enjoyable fruitybut-savoury nose that truly whets the appetite.

The aroma of spicy, blackberry fruit is followed up by satisfying flavours of earthy berry, black currant and toasty oak.

The variety obviously seems to enjoy the Glenrowan climate and its granitic soil.

The wineâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s earthiness and spicy qualities make it an ideal match for perfectly cooked, rare roast beef.

INGREDIENTS

PREPARING and cooking the perfect meal of roast beef and vegetables is a culinary skill which, to this day, still eludes me.

No matter how hard I try, or on what recipe I rely, I canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t seem to achieve that perfect combination of slightly crusty bark on the outside and melt-in-themouth rare juiciness on the inside.

Mumâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s pot roast is passable, but no one has ever raved or asked for the recipe, and a slow roast, even when well rested, never seems to offer the succulence or silkiness Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m aiming for.

What I have found is that my rather ordinary rare roast beef is often much better cold the next day, and it makes a delicious dish when paired with baby beets and velvety goatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s cheese.

IN my previous article I discussed the importance of a parent’s role in monitoring their children’s online activity, with a particular focus on preventing online harassment and bullying that has become something of a scourge for our younger generation.

This week I’d like to delve further into the discussion and respond to some of the great questions I received from parents.

1) What age is appropriate for a child to have a social media account?

The minimum age requirement for a minor to create a Facebook, Twitter, Youtube, Instagram, and most other social media sites account is 13.

As with many things, a parent should use their own discretion when it comes to determining whether or not they feel their child is mature enough to have their own account.

from someone you’re child knows personally, then I honestly think the best course of action is to report the abuse to the website administrators, and if no action is taken, then simply delete your child’s account.

Lastly, if your child has been bullied online and you believe it has had an impact on your child’s well being, it could be advisable to seek professional advice or counselling for your child.
