FROM his front row seat as an organiser of Yackandandah’s Spring Migration Festival, local resident Gary Hayward has seen both society and the event itself evolve over the years. The festival was first floated after the success of the movie Strange Bedfellows, much of which was filmed in Yackandandah. “This movie was a great advertisement for Yack,” Gary said. “It was fun and also had a message of tolerance and acceptance.” Featuring a host of events, from markets to dance parties and drag performances, the festival has attracted thousands of people from across Australia and the world. Gary said the event has been well supported by the local community. And now, on the eve of its 11th year, he said that equality, particularly marriage equality, is a bigger focus than ever. Gary has been present at council votes on the border that have given their blessing to marriage equality, saying it was evidence that the tide of equality was turning in favour of the LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender) community. “It also gives the younger generation hope,” he said, adding that while the festival has not been without opposition or hiccups, organisers have never given up. “Eleven years ago we made a festival out of a movie that was filmed here… many people have changed their view and now all Australians should be equal. “We were hoping the Abbott government would have followed the rest of the English speaking world and given his members a free vote after Ireland and America passed equality, but to our sadness, we still have to wait.” continued page |

The Ponytail ONE of the most precious plants in our garden is a large potted Ponytail. It is at least forty years old and growing in an old oriental style pot. Beaucarnea recurvate is more commonly known as Ponytail palm, or Elephants foot tree, but isn’t a palm or a tree. It is part of the Agave family and is a succulent, growing best in semi dry conditions. It is tough, a native to the dry, desert regions of Mexico and the United States. Ponytails resemble a giant onion bulb, with a swollen bulbous base and palm like trunks which grow multiple branches and sprout long strappy leaves similar to a pony’s tail, hence the common name. Ponytails are especially suited to growing in pots or containers. They need good drainage and fertile soil. Use a premium quality succulent mix with a slow release fertiliser. Water regularly in the summer months, letting the mix dry out completely in between watering. Only water occasionally during the winter months; too much water and the trunk may rot. They don’t need much maintenance to stay healthy. Fertilise Ponytails in spring and early autumn, but don’t over fertilise. Too much and the plant may develop brown tips on the leaves.

THE prostate is a gland found only in men. It sits in the groin, behind the base of the penis inside the body, and normally is about the size of a walnut. The main function of the prostate is to produce one of the major fluids that make up semen. Anything that causes swelling or enlargement to the prostate can affect a man’s ability to pass urine because the urethra goes through the prostate– one of the most common and early warning signs that there may be a problem with the prostate. Colostrum and calf health AS many cattle farmers will know, colostrum plays a vital role in the development of a healthy immune system in calves. Colostrum is a term that refers to the precious milk a cow produces immediately after calving. Colostrum is the primary source of antibodies (or immunoglobulins- Ig) in newborn calves. The presence of Immunoglobulin’s (Ig) in the body allows a calf to mount an appropriate immune response against various diseases. The important immunoglobulin in colostrums is known as IgG. Absorption of IgG in colostrum from the gut of the calf can only occur in the first few hours after birth. After this time period the ability of calves gut to absorb and use Ig elsewhere in the body rapidly decreases.
Additionally, the concentrations of Ig in milk decrease over time, beginning from the very first milking post calving. Other important factors which influence colostrum absorption include the quality of colostrum, the quantity of colostrum consumed and the way in which the colostrum is consumed (the anatomy of the immature gastrointestinal tract is such that suckling from the cow or a feeding nipple results in higher Ig absorbtion than if a stomach tube is used). Colostrum quality can be assessed by measuring Ig in grams/L. A brix refractometer is a cheap and effective way of doing this. Simply place a few drops of colostrum on the glass slide and read the number from the right hand column when viewing through the eyepiece. Excellent colostrum has an
IgG content of >90g/L and good colustrum between 65-90g/L. Ideally a calf should have 100g of IgG within the first 6 hours of birth. In most cases this equilibrates to a volume 2.5L if suckling or 3-4L if using a stomach feeder. Fish on the bite everywhere ALL across the region the fish are on the bite. I have received so many fishing reports this week that it is hard to know where to start. Trout reports have literally been flooding in, with the pick of the bunch being the Ovens River upstream of Porepunkah. I have heard of, and seen photos of trout being caught up there on bladed spinners, as well as by anglers drifting worms. I also had a report from the Mitta Mitta River around Eskdale from midweek last week. A fella from Wagga messaged me on Facebook looking for some advice and I suggested the Mitta Mitta River. He got back to me late last week and said that they fished for two

days, catching just eight trout, but the average size was quite large. Lake Hume has been going nuts with decent reports of yellowbelly and trout being caught. Some anglers have been catching up to 10 yellowbelly in a session trolling medium sized hard body lures and casting lipless crankbaits. Spinnerbaits have accounted for a few yellowbelly as well, but from the reports I have received it is the medium sized hard body lures that have been getting the best results.
Not only is it large yellowbelly that have been caught, but some very large trout have also been caught in Lake Hume in recent weeks by anglers trolling hard body minnows and winged lures such as Tassie Devils. When I say large trout, I am talking about trout over 70cm in length - true monsters. They have not been one-off catches either - it seems as though every day at least one lucky angler is striking it lucky with a monster trout. I have been catching some lovely trout in a few of the smaller waterways across the region. I have uploaded some video footage to my YouTube channel, called “Robbiefishing” if you would like to see some of my adventures.

North Ovens Shire, 1867 THE North Ovens Shire was proclaimed on September 17, 1867. Originally part of the Rutherglen Road District, it had become a separate Road District in 1863 following a petition by landholders closer to the Ovens River. When Road Districts were upgraded into Shires, it became the North Ovens Shire.
THE good thing about the Hedgehog is that you can choose your own biscuit. Marie, Choc Ripple or a digestive biscuit works well. You can even make your own if you want to go to the trouble. But I’m happy to go with the flow, and use our favorite biscuit – the Marie. It is a just-sweet crumbly biscuit, perfect for cheesecake bases and hedgehog slice. I made this slice every few days for my boss at Pacific Dunlop; he would have a piece every morning with a cup of tea. I needed a good excuse if there wasn’t any. Method Grease a 20cm x 30cm lamington pan; line base and two long sides with baking paper, extending paper 2cm above edges of pan. Combine biscuits, nuts and coconut in large bowl. Place butter, sugar and sifted cocoa in a medium pan; stir over heat until butter is melted and sugar is dissolved. Remove from heat; whisk in egg. Pour chocolate mixture over biscuit mixture; mix well.
WITH BRONWYN INGLETON Press into prepared pan. Cover; refrigerate while you make the icing. Put chocolate, butter and rum, if using, in a bowl over hot water and stir until melted. Pour onto hedgehog and tilt tin to achieve a smooth, even layer. Refrigerate briefly to set icing before cutting into squares. Slice can be made up to four days ahead; store in an airtight container in your refrigerator.

THERE is excitement in the year when September rolls around. You don’t need a calendar to tell what month it is, as the days get a little longer, the magpies begin to swoop and football fans celebrate finals fever. Everyone else settles for hay fever, which would be tolerable if only there was some warmth and sunshine to sniffle our way through. If there were such a phenomenon as an Indian winter we seem to be in it, still fending off the biting breeze in puffy jackets when we should be bare armed and basking in solar rays. It’s definitely time to ditch the thermos and soup and opt for pressed juice and Pinot Grigio. I’d suggest a glass of Indigo Vineyard Pinot Grigio with one of those tossed vegetable salads. Pumpkin, pine nuts and spinach go wonderfully with the wine’s complex, fruity character.

Opportunity knocks but once GREAT ideas don’t come along very often, however, I believe the suggestion by Industry Super Australia presented to the government’s tax review enquiry last week was an opportunity too good to miss. I can see the sceptics saying that a $4 billion investment in low and young income workers’ superannuation accounts of $5000 a year at this time - which could boost their retirement savings by up to 250 per cent and shave $1.7 billion from the annual age pension bill - was not something the government should be contemplating. But then previous governments have seen fit to have a cocontribution scheme for low income workers. Remember when employers were faced with the prospect

I for one am pleased that cool heads prevailed and this has, for the time being anyway, been capped at 9.5 per cent. Industry Super Australia see the $5000 “super seed” contribution for lower to middle income young Australians as being a cost effective and targeted way to improve the retirement standard of the most needy, which would ease some long term pressure on the federal budget
and a mounting pension bill. And with this sort of suggestion, this could also go a long way to close the gender gap that, on average, means women retire with about half as much superannuation as males. The greatest impact according to research would be experienced by single women, whose super could be boosted by up to 250 per cent. BT Financial Group boss Brad Cooper a couple of months ago said the government should consider taxing women’s superannuation contributions at a concessional rate to help them catch up. But he acknowledged such gender discrimination could be unconstitutional and would misdirect a subsidy to wealthy women who didn’t need it. He said, however, “something has to be done”.
Under Industry Super Australia’s proposal, everyone between 27 and 36 earning less than $37,000 a year would have a $5000 subsidy paid into their super account each year they were eligible. The head of Industry Super Australia public affairs, Matthew Linden, said that to get the most value from compounding investment returns and interest, the earlier you start getting more into people’s super the better. I am sure that those in this age group are the ones who can do with the help as they get themselves married, purchase a home and start a family. Up to age 26 there is a lot of mobility between income brackets, as people finish their studies and training and begin their career in earnest. But evidence suggests that less

than 15 per cent of those in the bottom three deciles at age 27 will move into a higher tax bracket over their working life. “Targeting people in their late 20s and early 30s would have between $72,000 and $168,000 more in superannuation when they start hitting retirement age,” says actuarial consulting firm Rice Warner. “That represents an increase of 38 to nearly 250 per cent. “By 2055, aggregate superannuation balances could be $440 billion higher and the government could be saving $1.7 billion on that year’s age pension expenditure.” So let’s hope that some cool heads in the government see the long term benefits and try to engender support for such a policy.
