FORMER Galen Catholic College student Mary Harmer has evolved from being a painfully shy teenage community theatre actor to making her mark on the Victorian cultural community.

She first got her start in the production of Allegro Theatre Company’s Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory in Yarrawonga at the age of 14.

“I had never performed before and was incredibly shy,” she said.

“When I first stepped on the stage, though, I thought ‘I want to do this forever’, so I just kept auditioning and performing with school and Allegro shows until I moved to Melbourne.

“Allegro was such a wonderfully inspiring community, just full of really great performers who were really supportive, especially to such an inexperienced theatre maker.”

Mary studied VCE at Galen College, including both drama and theatre studies in year 12.

“I was challenged to explore all the different facets of theatre, and became more experimental with what kind of roles I would fulfil,” she said.

“I discovered that combining theatre making with other areas of interest, like social justice, was very satisfying for me, and I went on to complete a Bachelor of Arts, majoring in theatre studies and human rights, as a result.”

Her passion for art and culture has never subsided, forming a creative collaboration ‘Harmer and Gunn’ with friend Chloe Gunn about 18 months ago.

The collaboration developed as what Mary calls a ‘savings account’ of ideas the pair kept having when they met as part of Platform Youth Theatre’s Creative Generator in 2014.

AUTUMN is the time to start planning for your spring bulb display.

Many growers release catalogues this time of the year for ordering and delivery, ready to plant when the soil temperatures have cooled down at the end of April or May. I placed an early order with a grower at the Henty Field days back in September last year and the parcel arrived in the mail this week. I couldn’t wait to open it.

I have been planting daffodils and jonquils along the driveway under the almond trees for four years now, each year adding more.

The colours so far are limited to yellow and white varieties which are naturalising and multiplying nicely.

But this parcel contains daffodils with pink, orange and red colouring.

“Pink charm” features white petals which surround a neat white cup with a green eye and edged with a thick band of rich-pink.

“Pink tea” has a beautiful pink ruffled centre cup and crisp white petals.

“Heavenly gift” features magnificent large blooms with a bright lemon yellow flat cup that matures to a deep apricot, surrounded by cream, well-formed petals.

“Precocious” is as beautiful and showy as the name suggests and has

large pretty frilled salmon pink cups with creamy white petals.

“Marilyn” is stunning with its round white petals with a luminous, lemon yellow pleated crown that has a bright orange scalloped edge.

“Lemon beauty” has pure white petals with a white and yellow ruffled cup.

“Golden echo” has long lasting flowers and a wonderful fragrance.

It has a long golden yellow cup and creamy white petals with a yellow halo at the base.

“Tahiti” stands out with its double flowers with multiple gold-yellow petals and scarlet interior ruffles.

All are easily grown in average, well-drained soils in full sun or part shade.

They are also perfect for planting in pots and containers to spread the springtime colour.

Strangles - is your horse vaccinated? reduced by vaccination either alone or in combination with the tetanus vaccine.

The initial course of the strangles vaccine is three inoculations at two weekly intervals and follow up vaccination is yearly.

Other measures that can be taken in order to try and reduce the spread of strangles is to have designated equipment for individual horses and to implement quarantine periods of isolation for any horses coming onto your property.

IN recent months we have been seeing the occurrence of a significant number of strangles cases in the North East of Victoria.

Strangles is a bacterial disease of the upper respiratory tract in horses and is caused by the organism streptoccoccus equi subspecies equi.

Strangles is highly contagious and can be rapidly spread between animals via nasal discharges that come into contact with the nose or mouth by direct contact or via contaminated equipment such as head collars, buckets or tack.

People can also serve as a means of spreading the disease between horses.

The disease causes a multitude of clinical signs including an extreme fever, lethargy, a thick nasal discharge and enlarged lymph nodes beneath the jaw.

Sometimes the lymph nodes can form an abscess and often they impede on the upper respiratory tract causing increased noise during breathing.

If you have movement of horses on and off your property then you are at risk of contracting strangles.

CRAFTY: One of Harmer and Gunn’s key projects to date has been their “GLAM” project at the 2015 Falls and Village Festivals – a roving ‘Glambulance’ as well as a craft, creative and dance space to help people get the most out of their festival experience.

She said that Harmer and Gunn has refined itself to making “interactive and immersive theatre that is communityfocused”, in the hopes of achieving accessibility and sustainability in each project.

“We have a combined passion to invigorate communities and make theatre relevant to non-artists,” Mary said.

“I am passionate about accessibility, Chloe about sustainability, and together we’re on a mission to make these things realised in communityfocused theatre.”

The pair have been involved in a number of festivals in and around Melbourne, including taking an installation called ‘Glam’ to the Falls and Village festivals in 2015.

And in the lead up to Easter things will come full circle for Mary when she and Chloe share their expertise and experience with Galen Catholic College students with a workshop around their

interactive theatre project, Two Worlds.

The project is based around the vision of a post apocalyptic future where humans cannot live on the land, but have evolved and migrated to live either under the sea or in the sky, and scientists must figure out a way to connect the two worlds.

“We’re both very interested in environmental sustainability, and started speaking to this idea of a dystopian future where the land has been trashed,” Mary said.

“We also want to empower young people to take action, and help them feel like they have a voice on these matters, and they can make an impact.

“Theatre and art and culture is what has evolved us, and has led humans to be innovative and to move forward again and again.

“We only hope that this starts to feel less exclusive and elitist, and that everyone can soon feel and be creative every day.”

Location: The Catch: LOVELY LAKE: Picturesque Lake William Hovell was at 60 per cent capacity on the weekend, but there’s still plenty of water to fish and the boat ramp is still in the water. The author caught around 15 or so small redfin (inset) from the bank while swimming with his kids last Saturday afternoon.

Lake William Hovell redfin tactics AUTUMN is the best time of the year to head to Lake William Hovell chasing redfin.

Trolling Troll deep diving small hard body lures.

Small lures that get down to around 20 feet deep or more are ideal.

I like the Halco Crazy deep, or the Luhr Jensen hotlips.

The small 50mm AC invaders are another great option.

Bright colours seem to work the best, although in the really clear water natural colours will serve you well.

Try and troll at a depth where your lure is just off the bottom - a depth sounder is very helpful.

Bait fishing When bait fishing I like to use two rods with yabbies as bait on each.

One rod is rigged with a very small yabby and the other with a larger yabby that will be overlooked by the tiny redfin and attractive to the bigger models.

I take a bucket of worms in case I run out of yabbies.

Soft plastics I love the curl tail grubs in bright colours.

My all time favourite redfin soft plastic is the Strike Tiger 2” curl tail grub in “whitebait pearl” colour.

These can be cast and retrieved as close to the bottom as possible, or can be bounced around the bottom directly underneath your boat or kayak.

I like to drift around and bounce the soft plastic off the bottom underneath my kayak until I locate a school of redfin.

Depth I find the larger redfin are usually down deeper in around 20-30 feet of water.

There are still plenty of small redfin down that deep too, but that’s where the biggest fish tend to be.

Around the edges of the lake in the really shallow water there are millions of tiny redfin which are easy to catch with bladed spinners such as celtas and are great fun for the kids.

Wholegrains are natural grains not made into flours, such as traditional whole oats, amaranth, buckwheat, quinoa, brown rice, psyllium husks and whole wheat grain.

Source seed bread and whole grain bread such as Burgen breads, traditional oat porridge, brown rice, psyllium husks, and look for whole food recipes for the other grains.

They are often easily substituted for the fibreless grains, but will need a longer cooking time.

Avoid alcohol, as it slows down clearance of estrogen and is an irritant.

Reduce sugar, excessively sweet foods such as commercial cereals, muesli bars, flavoured yogurt, soft drink, fruit juice and desserts – even with “natural sweeteners” such as agave, maple syrup, brown sugar, molasses.

These foods in excess disrupt the gut bacteria balance and ultimately create mucous congestion and inflammation.

Sugar spikes inside the body also cause hormones to swing out of control.

Include “estrogen

mimics” in your diet.

Flaxseeds (linseeds) and soy (tofu, vitasoy milk) can create a “fake estrogen effect” and help the liver to eliminate excess estrogen that cause fibroids to grow.

Try firm tofu cut into cubes in curries, casseroles or soups (tofu will take on the flavours of the dish).

Brassica vegetable like broccoli, cauliflower and cabbage are really useful as are fibres like ground linseeds on your porridge or whole grain muesli.

LSA is a blend of linseeds, sunflower and almond ground up for this purpose also.

Stay active.

Movement of the pelvic area will help blood flow, relieve congestion and inflammation and will also keep you energised.

Stay hydrated with clear fluids such as water, mineral water, broths and herbal teas.

Keep an eye out to make sure you have clear wee and a wet tongue at all times.

Coffee, tea, fruit juice, alcohol and soft drink do not count towards your water tally and will all increase your need for water.

2015 Devils Creek Chardonnay Around $10 AS we come to the end of one hell of a heatwave, spare a thought for those who couldn’t put off what they had to do today until tomorrow.

It’s all very well to postpone something for a day or two, but not indefinitely, and bills still have to paid, families still have to be fed and births, deaths and marriages wait for no one.

While most of us can spend our time in air conditioned comfort, I really feel for those I know who have been out picking grapes; walking kilometres of vines and toiling away carrying buckets under the sun in 40 degree heat.

They sacrifice their comfort to earn a quid, so that people like me can kick back on the couch drinking chardonnay and catching up on Game of Thrones.

Keeping me company this week was Michelini Wines’ Devils Creek Chardonnay, and

This is a wine to enjoy any day of the week, which works with white meat dishes, or lazily, cobbled together platters filled with cheeses, pickled peppers and crunchy crackers.

New research finds Australians prioritise flexibility of hours over more pay A

ustralian workers are aspiring to maximise their free time in 2016 by outsourcing household chores and opting for flexibility of work hours over increased pay.

Airtasker’s third Future of Work study reveal that up to 38 per cent of Australians intend to outsource their chores to free up time in 2016.

As a benchmark, around 30 per cent of Australians currently employ others to complete their housework.

Meanwhile, for the first time in the study series, the majority of workers (38 per cent) indicated that flexibility was more important to them than pay

when looking for work.

What has happened to the lucky country?

I USED to have a belief that Australians lived in the best country in the world and that there was nowhere else to compare it.

But has my interpretation of the lucky country changed over the past few years?

Years ago we could trust the banks, our life insurance and superannuation policies were well protected, and we didn’t have the drug problem that is now sweeping the country.

I even noticed a man in our local Woolworths store the other evening with a t-shirt slogan “You are only guilty if you get caught”.

Where and how do we get some respect back into life in the ‘lucky country’?

Elsewhere we have claims that heart attack victims have been unfairly treated by one of the nation’s largest insurers – among them a person who required a defibrillator to restart his heart but his bank refused to pay because his attack was not deemed severe enough.

In a further development with the same insurer, it has come to light that even though the person was suffering from “severe” post-traumatic stress disorder and other mental illnesses, when he attempted to make a claim on his total and permanent insurance policy he held through his superannuation fund his application was refused.

The insurance company and the

super fund both argued that with psychiatric treatment he “may” one day be able to return to work.

For the entire $44 billion life insurance industry, mental health is proving to be one of its greatest challenges.

A frightening one in five Australians will experience at least one bout of mental illness and, according to the World Health Organisation, by 2030 depression will be the biggest health burden, economically and sociologically.

I am beginning to wonder if there are any banks or insurance companies that you can trust to take control of your superannuation and life insurance?

Some people have short memories, but I bet the farmers who suffered at the hands of the unscrupulous dealings of the Australian Wheat Board must be still suffering.

It seems strange to me that those in high places can have a lapse of concentration and repay the money, no questions asked, while the man in the street will be dragged through the courts.

I do not say this shouldn’t take place, but why is it not the same for everyone, not just those who get a slap on the knuckles, repay what they have been found out about and nothing more happens?
