From Spain to Buckland Valley

WHEN Viv Andersen and Chris Davey met in Spain and decided to make a home together in Australia, Viv had just one stipulation: we must be near the sea and somewhere warm and tropical.

Naturally, the Buckland Valley in Victoria’s High Country ticked all the boxes and went straight to the top of the list.

Not. “We originally thought we’d live in Western Australia - somewhere warm and by the sea,” Viv said.

“But we came through Bright on our way to Queensland and fell in love with the property in the Buckland Valley.

“The mountains, the river and the nearby snow fields, we loved it all and the horse riding tracks were a real bonus.”

Chris had trained as a chef at the Hilton in Melbourne, visiting the North East with his family as a child.

Once he gained his qualifications, he worked all over the country in large resorts and restaurants before heading off to sea.

Chris spent time on game fishing boats, small cruise ships and finally a large, privately-owned motor yacht which saw him cruising the Caribbean and Mediterranean.

When he and his multi-billionaire boss docked their boat in southern Spain, Chris met Viv. Originally from Denmark, Viv had moved to Spain in her early 20s to pursue a career in real estate and when she met Chris, she was running her own real estate business.

Feline litter issues OUR feline friends can be finicky creatures, especially when it comes to toileting habits.

A lot of feline owners have issues with their pet’s toileting habits.

Often these ‘issues’ are actually just normal cat behaviour and we need to understand their likes and dislikes better to help them behave how we want them too.

Occasionally toileting issues can be due to medical reasons such as feline cystitis, bladder stones, irritable bowel syndrome, arthritis and mobility issues.

These need to be fully assessed first to ensure your pet isn’t in pain or suffering from a condition that could be better managed.

However, if your feline friend is in perfect health and no underlying issues are detected, then we need to work on the toilet situation for your pet.

First, we need to distinguish between ‘marking’ and ‘inappropriate urination’.

Marking is normal feline behaviour; they do this to mark their territory and can be due to other cats being in the area.

When marking a cat will be standing, tail wiggling and will spray a small amount of urine on a vertical surface.

Inappropriate urination is when a cat urinates normally, but in a location

with Ovens and Kiewa Veterinary Hospital that doesn’t appeal to the owner, such as on your nice shoes.

When this occurs, we need to work out why the cat isn’t urinating in the normal place and what we can do to encourage the cat to urinate where you want them to.

The cat may not want to go where it normally urinates due to an aversion of the litter tray and the type of litter, a previous bad experience in the litter tray, they may prefer another substrate such as your bedding, the litter tray may not be as clean as they would like, and a variety of other reasons.

You need to make the litter tray as appealing as possible to your cat.

This means having enough trays for each of your cats.

The rule is one tray per cat, plus one extra. The tray needs to be large enough, ideally 1.5 times the length of the cat from nose to tail base.

The litter depth needs to be at least 4-6 cm deep, so they don’t reach the bottom of the tray when they dig.

It needs to be in a safe environment where they can see what is going on around them.

THE oldest inhabited house in the Rural City of Wangaratta is the Anglican Deanery on Ovens Street.

In the garden and dominating the skyline is the oldest living planted tree in Wangaratta.

This Bunya Bunya tree was planted about 170 years ago.

Bunya Bunyas are eminently suited as feature trees in large gardens or parks.

The foliage is shiny, bright green and very prickly.

Araucaria bidwillii is a relic from the age of dinosaurs.

It shares the same ancient pedigree as the Wollemi Pine.

Both rainforest trees belong to the Araucariaceae family.

A. bidwillii is unique.

Seed cones, each weighing around 10 kg, are produced every three years between December and March, about one and a half years after pollination of the solitary pollen cones.

The huge seed cones hold from 50 -100 large almond-shaped nuts.

Bunya nuts were highly prized by Australia’s indigenous peoples who gathered from distant areas every three years to celebrate and feast on the harvest.

The Bunya Bunya was first collected by white settlers from the Bunya Mountains (Queensland) and described by the botanist John Carne Bidwill in 1843.

The genus Bidwillia and 12 species of native Australian and New Zealand plants commemorate his name.

From the 1860s to the 1930s timber cutters established saw mills to harvest the timber wealth of the Bunyas.

This inevitably led to the decimation of the original stands in Queensland and New South Wales and ended the indigenous harvests within 15 years.

Timber was used for structural joinery and flooring, and domestic products such as butter boxes, masts and booms for boats and piano keys.

Nowadays Bunya timber is highly valued by cabinetmakers and woodworkers.

Two Australian guitar makers use bunya for the soundboards of acoustic guitars.

Growing a Bunya Bunya from seed is definitely worth the effort for those of a patient and curious disposition.

Germination can take up to two years.

Eventually, a radical will emerge from the nut, which grows downward for about 8cm and produces a potato-like tuber.

It is from this tuber that a growing shoot and roots will emerge to become a living fossil tree.

A. bidwillii trees are slow growing and long-lived.

In our garden a 20-year-old tree has reached around three metres in height (pictured).

Growing from seed is not difficult. It is well worth the effort; and the result could be either a potted living fossil Christmas tree or a unique tree planted out and destined to live for many generations to come.

The Carson Gewurztraminer IT is amazing how important our sense of smell is in all that we do.

It can trigger long held memories, draw us towards something or someone we desire and tell us when something is nearly ready and going to be delicious to eat.

The smell of toast, bacon frying or a sausage sizzling whets my appetite before I even think about being hungry, and it told me my peaches were ready to pick without touching them.

The aroma of Gewuztraminer is one of the reasons I’m drawn to the variety and for the novice wine sniffer, it’s perhaps a good one to practice on because it’s so complex and interesting.

The latest release Pfeiffer The Carson Gewurztraminer is now available and the fresh, floral bouquet if almost irresistible.

It has a beautiful rose-like floral scent, like a rare beauty you’d find in your grandmother’s garden, but then there is also the suggestion of the musk sticks you’d buy from the tuck shop.

The taste leans more toward citrus, with a delightful freshness and acidity, and it’s only a little later that floral element begins to shine back through.

This Day in History, 1929 A DRAMATIC day, when a cloudburst, possibly the worst ever known in the Upper Murray, rearranged the scenery around Corryong.

This day in 1929 was a Saturday; the heavens opened, and a landslide of mud and trees went into Nariel Creek.

Hundreds of trout died, Corryong’s water supply was polluted, and when the storm had subsided, Nariel Creek had a new course - a channel three chains wide, 40 feet deep and two miles long carved out by the water.

Then came the conversation about where they should live as they embarked on a life together.

Having fallen in love with the Buckland Valley, Chris and Viv purchased a property which they opened as a bed and breakfast with a twist.

“It was called Dinner and Doona as we catered dinner for our guests as well,” Viv explained.

“To supplement the income, we decided to start a mobile catering business providing office lunch platters for just 10 people and from those humble beginnings, Straight From the Ovens Catering was born.

“The business grew and Chris’ reputation for providing quality meals for large groups

of up to 450 guests was established.”

The past 21 years have seen Chris, Viv and their staff cater weddings, birthdays, funerals, graduations and sporting and corporate events right across the North East, and in some pretty interesting places.

“We catered a wedding at the top of Mount Buffalo once where the bride wore a ski jacket over her dress,” Viv laughed.

“Weddings are always the most memorable to cater for as you are part of such a happy family occasion.

“We have also catered at the trout farm, in people’s homes, in apple sheds, cattle sheds, in paddocks, at wineries and other magnificent wedding venues, at tea plantations, caravan parks, golf clubs, bowls clubs, football

clubs and historic halls.

“It’s been a very varied, interesting job and we’ve met some amazing people,” Chris said.

“If we had spent the last 21 years working in the same restaurant kitchen the whole time we wouldn’t have lasted so long in the hospitality industry - we have loved the variation and challenge of mobile catering.”

When Chris and Viv came to start a family, their business adapted to the change.

“Most of the cooking preparations are done at home during the day, so we have been here when the girls get back from school and we have been able to spend Christmas and school holidays together as a family,” Chris said.

Although Chris and Viv are putting their beloved business

up for sale, they will not be completely disappearing from the world of cooking.

“We have another business where Chris makes plum puddings and fruit cakes and we also supply corporate gift hampers in collaboration with other small regional producers through Alpine Valleys Fine Foods, so we can’t fully retire just yet,” Viv said.

“We would like to say a big ‘thank you’ to the North East community for letting us be part of your special occasions and trusting us to cater your events over the past two decades,” Chris said.

“It has been amazing to be involved with all these family milestones, but now it’s time for us to retire and let someone else be part of those special times.”

GONE FISHING

Change on the way AS we head into the final stages of summer, things are starting to change with the local fishing.

On Saturday afternoon I fished the King River with my mate Brett.

Between us we had four fishing rods with three different baits, and we did not catch a single fish.

The water looked fantastic.

It has dropped and cleared up, but the fishing was very slow.

I am not alarmed by this as it is typical for this time of the year.

As we head into autumn, I find the Murray cod fishing tends to become more hit and miss.

I have had some of my best Murray cod fishing sessions in March and April, but I also have a lot more fishless trips then than I do in December and January.

The cod are still active in the rivers, however they start to become more unpredictable from here on in.

For consistency, head to Lake Mulwala, as that tends to fish well for cod throughout most of autumn.

The trout are a different story.

As the nights get longer the water starts to cool and the trout start to become more active.

I fished a couple of tributaries of the Ovens River late last week where I found some good trout fishing.

Not only was the fishing good, but the trout were fat.

The wet summer seems to have delivered a smorgasbord of food to the trout and they appear to have been making the most of it.

I have fished at both Lake William Hovell and Lake Buffalo over the last few weeks and have been catching redfin in both lakes.

Most fish have been small although I have caught a couple big enough to keep from Lake Buffalo.

Dancing in the moonlight FOR time immemorial, songs have been sung about it, poems written about it, folk tales shared about it, and even a few religious cults have been centred around it.

Yes, it’s fair to say that the moon has captured the attention of humanity for a very long time, and how could it not?

Though we modern humans understand enough about space to realise that the moon is just a big rock that reflects light from the sun (and generally give it nary a passing thought as a result), ancient humans must have looked upon this constantly moving, shape-changing, glowing ball in the night time sky and been awe-struck.

And while it may not be a god, or possess the power to turn people into werewolves, the moon certainly has a potent effect on our planet and our lives.

The moon may have formed when a giant object in the solar system hit earth Scientists aren’t in total agreement on how the Moon formed, but the most widely accepted theory is the giant impact hypothesis. According to this theory, an object the size of Mars called Theia collided with Earth 4.5 billion years ago when the solar system was still new and chaotic. The impact dislodged matter from Earth’s crust, and the debris attached to whatever was left of Theia through the force of gravity.

This scenario would explain why the Moon is made up of lighter elements found in Earth’s outer layer, but it still leaves some questions unanswered. If the giant impact hypothesis is correct,

about 60 percent of the Moon should consist of the impact object. Instead, its composition is almost identical to that of Earth. There are alternative explanations: one posits that the Moon is a space object that got caught in Earth’s orbit, and another one suggests the Moon and Earth formed at the same time, but none is as popular as the giant impact theory.

The moon is the perfect size for solar eclipses A lucky set of circumstances make total solar eclipses, as seen from Earth, possible. The Moon is just the right size and distance from our planet to appear as the same size as the Sun in the sky.

When the Moon passes between the Sun and the Earth, it covers the Sun perfectly with an impressive corona illuminating its edges. If it were any smaller or farther from Earth, it would look like a blot on the Sun during a solar eclipse.

It’s the largest moon in the solar system relative to its planet Our Moon isn’t the largest in the solar system (that distinction goes to Ganymede, one of Jupiter’s 79 moons), but it is the biggest in relation to the planet it orbits. With a diameter of 2159 miles and a surface area of 14.6 million square miles, the Moon is a little more than onefourth the size of Earth. The dwarf planet Pluto has an even smaller moon-to-planet ratio. Pluto’s largest moon Charon is nearly the size of its host body, leading some astronomers to refer to the pair as a double-dwarf planet.

Gravitational forces from Earth have helped to exaggerate the Moon’s oblong appearance over eons.

Scientists thought moon dust would cause lunar landers to sink When preparing to send missions to the Moon, some scientists feared that a thick layer of dust on the body’s surface would cause complications. One of the strongest proponents of the dust theory was Thomas Gold, an astrophysicist at Cornell University. He insisted that the Moon was covered in seas of dust soft and thick enough to swallow a lunar lander. Though the Moon’s surface is dusty, the layer is too thin to cause problems, as the successful landings of the Soviet Luna 9 and the American Surveyor spacecrafts proved in 1966.

The “dark side of the moon” is the result of synchronous rotation Even though the Moon is constantly rotating, only one side of it is visible from Earth. This is because the Moon is locked in synchronous rotation. It takes the Moon just as long to complete one full rotation as it does for the body to orbit around the Earth once, so the same side always faces our planet. This isn’t a coincidence—the Earth’s gravitational forces have gradually pulled the tip of the slightly oblong Moon to point toward the planet, creating something called tidal lock.
