GAINING MOMENTUM:
Firm friends Margaret Hickey and Rosie Koop are the driving force behind Milawa Monologues. PHOTO: Kylie Wilson
YOUR average small town Auskick event is not a place where you may expect to find creative inspiration – but that’s what Glenrowan author Margaret Hickey found on the path to creating her latest work. Standing at games, she could observe the skills of the players, the mannerisms of the dads as they cheered on their children and interacted with each other, soaking up the sporting atmosphere. And it was this inspiration, as well as the rural environment she lives in and the people around her, that helped fuel her passion to write the newest instalment of the Milawa Monologues, opening this month. “It’s really a celebration of the Australian man,” Margaret said. “I’ve been lucky enough to have had a lot of good blokes in my life, including my husband, three sons, my two brothers and father. “There are lots of quietly noble men out there…just going about their business.” Margaret said the subject matter also complemented her previous instalment of the monologues, which focused on the interconnected stories of five women. “They’re men of different ages, different persuasions… all from the same little town,” she said. “The stories are all linked. “Wanting to belong would be the overarching theme.”
