FROM lying dormant in a paddock to driving across some of the most challenging terrain in Australia – a humble 1994 Mitsubishi Magna helped Beechworth father and son Barry and Bernard Morey and their family raise thousands of dollars for the Cancer Council recently. The car, donated to the family by Stanley farmer Harry Borchard, helped the pair compete in the fondly named ‘Shitbox Rally’, a challenge to drive cars worth no more than $1000 across some of Australia’s most arduous roads, all in the name of raising money for the Cancer Council. The Morey family collaborated to form the Morey’s Mission team, with Jan and daughter Lisa driving the car to Mackay for the start of the race, and Bernard and Barry taking up rally driving duties from Mackay to the finish line in Hobart. Barry said that the rally was an unforgettable experience and is not a race, rather more of a driving challenge and an exercise in teamwork, with teams driving together in small groups to ensure everyone reached their destination safely and had fun. And have fun they did, from dressing in tennis whites and playing impromptu games of tennis in the middle of the outback, to donning pirate garb aboard the Spirit of Tasmania. “It isn’t a race, it’s something you’re doing as a group,” Barry said. And given the rough and ready nature of the vehicles involved, he said there was plenty of pushing of stalled cars, and many roadside repair stops. Barry laughed as he recalled the team all having to help each other out of the mud at one stop, having all become bogged at the same time. continued page |

3D printed cheese IF there’s one fledgling industry that seems set to revolutionise people’s lives, it’s 3D printing. Utilising a plastic resin or filament, one can ‘print’ virtually any three dimensional object they can think of, or have the blueprints for, via a 3D printer. Currently, the price of these machines - as well as the technical knowledge required to operate them - still prohibits them from being a staple household appliance, but I doubt this will be the case for too much longer. The not too distant future will see households simply download and print all sorts of practical items. Need some new curtain rings, a custom container, a specialty tool, a nice decorative sculpture, or new phone case? Just download them and print them out. Or get creative and design them yourself. And that’s only the beginning. Already scientists have a working prototype molecular printer that has the ability to synthesise molecules, which could ultimately result in doctors having the ability to ‘print’ custom replacement organs for patients suffering from critical heart or liver failure. Not to mention the impact such a device
could have on the pharmaceutical and food industries. And speaking of the food industry, perhaps one of the more unique, real world applications of 3D printing I’ve encountered to date is 3D printed cheese. Australia, it seems, is not the only country suffering from a dairy industry crisis. Faced with falling milk prices, Dutch farmer Michaëla van Leeuwen invented the concept of 3D printed soft gouda cheese as a way of value adding to her farm’s produce. Now operating a small side business attached to her family’s dairy farm, Ms van Leeuwen prints custom shaped edible cheese sculptures as a way of promoting not just her farm, but the story of Dutch dairy farming as an industry. “People in Holland are searching [to know] where their product is from,”, she told the ABC in an interview. “[Consumers] want to hear the story, they want to meet the farmers, they want to see the cows in the fields.” And with plans to sell her cheese printers to other dairy manufacturers, we might well see delicious 3D printed cheese sculptures on our shores in the not too distant future.
EUCALYPTUS caesia, better known as ‘Silver Princess’ or Caesia, is an outstanding small tree with year round beauty. This beautiful tree grows to around 6m in height. It has a weeping habit and a sparse canopy, giving it a sculptural effect. As the tree matures some branches can gracefully weep down onto the ground. Its stems, leaves, flower buds and fruit are blue-green in colour and are covered in a silvery white powder, hence the common name Silver Princess. Another unique feature is the smooth, reddish brown bark that peels off in small, narrow, curly strips revealing brightly coloured new bark underneath. But the best features of ‘Silver Princess’ are the large showy flowers, which appear in late autumn and continue through to late spring. The large clustered flowers are up to 5 cm across and produce a sweet nectar which attracts nectar feeding birds. They are a stunning pink to red with a bright yellow centre and yellow tips on the long stamens. A rare white form also exists. The flowers are followed by large, silvery bell-shaped gumnuts about 3cm wide. Eucalyptus caesia, ‘Silver Princess’ is native to Western Australia, where it is only found in a small number of granite outcrops.

It is becoming increasingly rare in the wild but grown on a large scale by the horticultural industry for ornamental use in gardens and streetscapes and by the florist industry. ‘Silver Princess’ is propagated from seed. Most trees sold in the retail nursery industry are red. Some specialist nurseries stock the red and pink and limited white varieties. The Silver Princess is best planted in the autumn and winter months. It thrives in all well-draining soil types and once established is drought tolerant and requires little watering. It grows in a wide range of conditions from full sun to part shade and requires little maintenance apart from feeding with a native slow release fertiliser in spring. This elegant, native tree has been a garden favourite for many years and makes a spectacular feature in any garden. Happy gardening.

Beware of bloat WE all have probably had an experience where we have felt bloated and sore after a big meal, and with time it generally settles. However, a bloated dog can be a life threatening situation. This very serious type of bloat is known as gastric dilatation and volvulus (GDV) and is a condition where the dog’s stomach has rotated inside the abdomen by 180-360 degrees. Consequently, no gas, fluid or other contents can escape the stomach. The trapped gas and stomach contents cause the stomach to grossly distend, furthermore the blood supply in that area is compromised due to the twisted stomach. Traditionally, GDV most commonly affects deep chested dogs such as great danes, greyhounds, boxers and German shepherds. However, any dog, even miniature breeds can develop bloat. The most common scenario leading to a GDV occurring, is when the dog has eaten a large meal and then exercised heavily shortly after.
It is thought that the full stomach bouncing around in the abdomen can cause it to twist. However, there are other factors such as weight, genetics, diet and temperament which can increase the risk of GDV occurring. Once a diagnosis of GDV has been made, the dog is stabilised and often sent straight to surgery. The surgery involves decompressing and untwisting the stomach. Once the stomach has been returned to its normal position, it is anchored to the abdominal wall to help prevent the condition reoccurring. This procedure is called a ‘gastropexy’ and can even be performed as a preventative measure in some dogs at risk of GDV. Another situation saw team members running with a fire extinguisher to go to the aid of a rally driver whose BMW engine had caught fire. “It was good comradeship,� Barry said. “Everyone was there for the same cause,� Jan added. “There were some really lovely people, and inspiring people,� Barry said. The family said they were keen to raise money for such a good cause, and like most people, their lives have been touched by cancer, including one of their close friends living with the illness, and Jan’s late father Bob battling cancer during his lifetime. “They’re all within your mind as you fundraise,� Jan said, adding that the team raised $11,340 (including money raised from the sale of the Magna at the end of the rally) and the rally raised
about $1.5 million overall. “It’s just a good thing to support,� Barry added. “You can do a lot of good.� Barry said that he also enjoyed the fact that the rally supported small communities and their economies along the drive. The rally has been going for the past seven years, and Barry said he was inspired by the work of rally founder James Freeman, who lost both his parents to cancer 12 months apart. Snow season kicks off with enthusiasm WITH winter settling in, things are starting to get busier at local snow resorts. While few events are on the calendar, local mountains are well and truly open for business, with many boasting new facilities. Falls Creek is ideal for beginners, and is also popular with cross country skiers. This season, a new toboggan slope is set to open at the Village Bowl, accessible via the free Gully Chairlift, and new Fatbike trails allow visitors to explore the mountain on two wheels. At Mt Buller, there have been additions to their snowmaking systems, and for the first time, the resort is offering Mountain Safe courses in response to demand from alpine enthusiasts seeking to improve their backcountry safety skills. Mt Hotham, famous for its snowboarding facilities, continues to offer much for both snowboarders and black run skiers, as well as having expanded their snowmaking capabilities. A new Mount Hotham Alpine Resort Village is set
to be developed later this year and in the meantime, a temporary new village will be set up providing visitors with all they need during their visit to Mt Hotham. Dinner Plain’s new Snow Park offers snow tubing, skiing and snow play in winter, and tubing on artificial snow year round. New light towers enable night skiing and tubing on Wednesday and Saturdays in peak winter season while gentle slopes and fully automated snow making provide great conditions for learning to ski and snowboard. At Mt Buffalo, temperatures have been dropping steadily, and hopes are high for a good winter.

As I read an article in my CPA publication, I could not help but wonder what happens to our sportsmen and sportswomen when they hang up their boots and become an everyday citizen like you and me. It is not surprising that some of our elite athletes, who have reportedly made huge amounts of money in their chosen professions, have nothing to show for it. What with a lavish lifestyle and expensive entourages, some cannot cope with this style of living and do not have the financial knowledge that they need to have something for when the gravy train ceases to exist. The world was shocked in 1997 when Mike Tyson took a chunk out

From making an estimated A$390 million during his career, by the year 2003 Tyson was in debt to the tune of A$30 million. Holyfield did not fare much better either from his estimated earnings of A$324 million, as even though he owned a 109 room mansion at one time, the receivers were called in in 2003. I can also relate to reading that former Socceroos captain Lucas Neill, who played in the English Premier
league for 15 years and earned an estimated A$40 million had recently filed for bankruptcy. These are far from isolated incidents when it comes to sporting heavyweights getting taken for a ride due to financial mismanagement. Money is the root of all evil and a recent article in Sports Illustrated reported that 76 per cent of former National Football League players were either bankrupt or under financial stress because of joblessness or divorce within two years of retirement. They also reported that within five years of retirement, an estimated 60 per cent of former National Basketball Association (NBA) players went broke. There are a few AFL and NRL players who have also lost the plot too, so it can happen anywhere. But it is not all bad news. Look at former NBA superstar Michael Jordan.
He has business interests worth a reported A$1.45 billion – made in part by the use of his name for endorsements with companies such as Nike. His dream team teammate Earvin “Magic” Johnson has also become very successful although his first business venture (into a sports good store) resulted in a loss of A$259,000. Tennis’s sister act, Serena and Venus Williams, have also had a very hands on approach to their investments – and it appears to be paying dividends. Venus is the CEO of a successful design business, V Starr Interiors, a part owner of the Miami Dolphins with Serena, is a franchise owner of Jamba Juice and also manages athletic clothing line EleVen. Serena, still the world’s best women’s player, has a raft of high profile and lucrative endorsements with Chase Bank and PepsiCo as well as her own fashion label.
Closer to home, California-based Australian basketballer Andrew Bogut took it upon himself to get schooled in finances. Currently playing with NBA championship team Golden State Warriors, the towering centre commands a salary of more than A$16 million a year. He was determined not to waste that sort of income and realised how much he was paying people huge sums to do things he could do himself. I am sure with so many local athletes making a name for themselves in a variety of sports, there will be many parents hoping their offspring are being taken care of in managing the income earned. Last week saw some ugly instances in respect of AFL players and their managers/former managers hit the headlines, so parents make sure your children are receiving the right advice.

Winter frame reveals garden’s heart
JOAN Simms’ and John Hennessy’s Beechworth hillside garden – with tremendous views of Mount Buffalo to the south and the sweep to the west towards Everton – comes into its own in a chilly winter. The steep, sloping one-hectare site was a neglected grazing block with only one old pine tree and plentiful blackberries, broom and gorse when the couple bought it and developed their house and garden from spring 2003. Thirteen years later the garden’s keenly-defined framework shows to great effect in winter its hues of silver, grey, grey-green and blue. “It’s a garden designed in two parts,” say Joan and John. “Part one is around the home, at the top of the wedge-shaped block.
INTEGRATED | Joan Simms and John Hennessy have devised a wonderfully-structured garden. “The aim here is to create a contemporary structured garden complimenting the views. “A fountain and flagpole link the central axis. “Garden rooms integrate with internal rooms. Food gardens deliver produce to the kitchen. Overall the home and gardens strive for sustainability.” The planting extends the grey corrugated iron and blue trim of the house.
“Olives, iris, lavender and quinces link texturally to the corrugate while lines are mirrored in the pergolas of grapevine and wisteria, and hedges of teucrium, gardenia, saltbush and viburnum,” the pair says. “Cypress define design points.” Garden designer Catherine O’Neill and landscaper Robert Holden helped Joan and John to create the garden and local gardener Robert Cowell and
keen botanist Dave McIntyre gave planting advice. Two planted embankments frame the level platform on which the house was built. Terrace landscaping with local granite, pebbles and gravel has modified the slope. Below the garden is a deciduous colour forest of maple, oak, aspen, chestnut and pear, together with sculptures and a petanque court. It is linked with the house – designed by Melbourne architect Brian Stacey and an Indigo Shire heritage award joint winner as a ‘heritage house of the future’ in 2010 – by a meandering path, orchard and daffodil drift. The Simms-Hennessy garden featured in a recent Australian Garden History Society Victorian branch tour of the North East.

WITH winter heralding a risky season for house fires, RACV Insurance has warned householders that most blazes start in the kitchen. While house fires caused by heaters, fireplaces and electric blankets peak in winter, kitchen fires dominate all seasons, according to RACV Insurance claims data. The RACV statistics reveal that 26 per cent of house fire insurance claims in 2015 resulted from cooking. A further nine per cent were triggered by appliances including dishwashers, refrigerators, microwaves and toasters. RACV general manager insurance Paul Northey said it was important for householders to follow a few simple rules, particularly during our coldest months. Mr Northey warned that, although kitchens were the primary fire danger zone, fires could start in any area of the home. “The number of fires in sheds and garages increased last year and home owners should be careful when carrying out mechanical repairs in sheds and when using equipment such as power tools and lawn mowers,� he said. He advised home owners to check their home buildings and contents insurance to be sure they have sufficient cover in the event of fire.
