THROUGH expressing themselves creatively, working as a team or being immersed in their communities, youth across the North East are making a difference with their councils.

For Wangaratta teenager Michael Groves, joining the Rural City of Wangaratta youth council almost a year ago was all about contributing to his local community.

“I really just wanted to give back to the community that has given so much to me,” he said.

A lifelong Wangaratta resident, Michael has spent many years involved in community music and performance groups, and the youth council has widened participation in Clean Up Australia, tree plantings, and even a Battle of the Bands.

He even recently had the opportunity to meet Australian Governor General Peter Cosgrove.

Michael enjoys working towards a common goal with people his own age to “provide what people want” for the community, and preferred the term “representative” rather than leader.

“I find the best ideas come from outside (the council),” he said.

The year 11 student, with ambitions to be a paramedic, said school workload and stress was one of the biggest issues facing youth in Wangaratta.

“There’s this assumption that your whole livelihood is bound up in how well you do in school,” he said. continued page |

AUTUMN has come early this year.

After a relatively mild summer, without the extreme temperatures, the usual long summer which often prolonged well into April hasn’t continued this year.

Heaters have already been turned on and fires lit as the temperatures drop.

The cooler temperatures and shorter days have triggered the spectacular color changes in the green leaves of many deciduous trees and shrubs.

From green to red, orange, yellow, pink, scarlet and purple, these evolving autumn colors are caused by chemical changes within the leaves.

Leaves are green because of the presence of a pigment known as chlorophyll, which converts water and carbon dioxide into oxygen and glucose in a process called photosynthesis.

During autumn as the daylight hours become shorter, leaves are not able to make as much chlorophyll as during the warmer months.

The veins that carry water into and out of the leaf gradually close and the green chlorophyll disappears from the leaves.

Each leaf has small amounts of other colors in it year-round.

With less chlorophyll to give the leaf its green color, other colors, such as orange and yellow, become more visible.

What’s in your garden: Camellias, roses, rhododendrons, clematis, many bulbs, salvias, a variety of perennials and annuals, hydrangeas maples, viburnum, tulip trees and many other deciduous trees for beautiful color in the autumn.

What do you enjoy about gardening: The satisfaction of planting plants and trees and seeing them develop into a thing of beauty.

The sheer pleasure of creating a garden and being able to share it with people who care to visit the garden.

Our garden is open to the public

in both spring and autumn during the Spring and Autumn festivals, and in so doing we raise money for Angel Flight to pay for the fuel costs of transporting patients to the cities for necessary medical care.

The garden not only gives us pleasure but is a source of wonderful exercise and wellbeing.

Favorite plant/spot in your garden: The rear of the garden is a place for everyone to enjoy, particularly for children.

Relaxing garden seats are scattered around various parts of the garden giving it many areas

to relax and enjoy the serenity.

Water saving/conservation tip: The use of rice straw as a means of retaining moisture in the garden beds.

A huge amount of leaves in the autumn also helps.

Drippers are set up in various parts of the garden being labor saving as well.

Your tips to keep gardens in top shape: Regular maintenance is of paramount importance.

Lawns are cut regularly and the use of compost on all the garden beds helps to keep the weeds down.

The red and purple colors are caused by glucose trapped in the leaves after photosynthesis ceases.

Weather can affect how vibrantly the colors appear.

Some years may be more colorful than others. If the weather is too hot or cold, the leaves will not be as bright as they begin to change.

The most intense colors occur with warm sunny days and cool nights.

Water also plays an important role in autumn leaf colors.

During dry autumns, the tree may not receive enough water and the leaves will die faster and drop to the ground.

To help improve the color, give the trees some extra watering.

But, if it is a wet autumn with too much cloud and rain, the tree won’t receive enough sunlight, and the leaves will not be as brightly colored.

Make the most of the next few weeks to enjoy the colorful displays of the autumn leaves and decide which plants will be added to your garden.

Injured wildlife

CONFIDENCE: Alpine Shire resident Taylor Farmer speaking at a 2014 youth awards night that she helped organise.

Michael attends school with Alpine Shire youth councillor Taylor Farmer, whose interest in community and youth work stemmed from time spent with her father, a former Alpine Shire ranger, at work.

Friends and people at council encouraged the Bright teenager to get involved in youth council, and three years later, she has not looked back.

Taylor said she relished the collaborative aspect of youth council.

“We all put our ideas forward and get involved in the community,” she said, particularly proud of the rewarding experience of last year’s Alpine Shire Youth Awards night.

“We ran the whole night ourselves, it’s probably the best thing we’ve run,” she said.

Taylor said alleviating boredom for local youth was a big goal for her, as flow on effects such as getting involved with alcohol, drugs and illegal activities was a problem for Alpine Shire youth.

She said she had learned many valuable personal skills through her council work and hopes to go on to Monash University to study medicine.

For Rutherglen teenager Sarah Webster,

getting involved in organising events for youth was inspired by the example of sister Felicity, who worked with Indigo Shire Council youth development officer Annette Walton before her.

“Annette provides that encouraging atmosphere,” Sarah said.

In the past few years she has been a tireless worker, helping organise a number of youth events in the shire, as well as performing as a musician or photographing at many of them.

“It’s just a really good way to meet people your age,” she said.

Also a keen volunteer at the annual Yackandandah Folk Festival, Sarah said she loves to provide an encouraging atmosphere for everyone.

“We try and make it so anyone can have a go,” she said.

And while the recent school leaver is mulling over her career options, she said she continues to look up to her council mentor and said it would be interesting to be a youth worker.

SO many times on Australian roads, we see fatalities to our native fauna.

But many of our wildlife are marsupials.

Just because you see a dead kangaroo or wombat does not mean that there is not something living and struggling to survive associated with the animal.

Marsupials carry their young in very well padded pouches.

An adult marsupial can die from the trauma of an accident and its young may still survive, sometimes with minor injuries.

Also, healthy pouch young left in a pouch will die a slow and lingering death feeding off milk that has become foul or dying of dehydration or hypothermia.

If a dead marsupial is seen on the side of the road, it is humane and responsible to check if it is a female with a pouch young.

If it is a female but no young are seen in the pouch, it is important to check a surrounding 10m radius in case they have come out.

It is also sensible to try to move the animal to the side of the road where it cannot cause problems for drivers or carrion-eating birds such as wedge-tailed eagles and marking the animal in some way can help other drivers know it has been checked.

If there is a pouch young present, it needs to be kept warm and taken to the nearest registered wildlife carer.

If it is injured, your local veterinarian may need to see it immediately to administer appropriate first-aid and pain relief.

No native wildlife should be kept as a pet.

Registered wildlife carers have been trained in how to care for various species and prepare them for release back into their native setting.

It is very important if you find wildlife that needs care that you note down the exact location where it was found.

Any person found keeping wildlife who is not a registered wildlife carer will face hefty fines with the Department of Sustainability and Environment.

Wildlife carers give so much of their own time to the welfare of the animals in their care.

It is more than a full time job and requires great responsibility.

HUNGRY TROUT: A nice Kiewa Valley brown trout caught in a tributary of the Kiewa River on a black Metalhead soft plastic on the weekend.

Few cod, but trout fishing improves

THE Murray cod fishing continues to die in the backside across the region at the moment with fewer and fewer reports coming in each week.

I received a couple of reports from Lake Mulwala of two cod and one cod respectfully - all around 50cm in length and caught on hard body lures.

From all accounts the cod fishing is slow in the lake, but a few are getting caught by persistent anglers.

In the rivers I have had reports of poor cod fishing in the Broken and Kiewa rivers.

On the weekend I fished the Ovens and King rivers all day with a mate and we never had a touch, not even as much as a look in.

Over the coming four to six weeks the rivers will continue to taper off - if they can taper off any more than they already have.

On the upside, as the irrigation season winds down, and water releases from Lake Hume drop away, the Murray River will drop and can often turn on some really good cod fishing in April and May. This is the Murray River anywhere from Lake Hume downstream including Lake Mulwala.

The big news at the moment is the trout fishing, and how great it is.

caught in streams that have enough water in them.

The creeks are all quite low, but those with even small water flows and deep pools are producing some great fishing.

I fished a small tributary of the Kiewa River on the weekend where I landed half a dozen brown trout between 2030cm long, all on black Metalhead soft plastic fishing lures.

I have had great trout reports coming in from several creeks and rivers across the region now that the water has cooled.

The Mitta Mitta River continues to produce good numbers of trout on both bladed spinners and Tassie Devil lures, although it is very high due to water releases from Lake Dartmouth.

AUSTRALIA’S love of cooking shows is leading them to broaden their vegetable-purchasing horizons, with more than one in four Australians purchasing new vegetables after seeing them used on television or online, according to the latest data from Project Harvest.

The study, which tracks consumer attitudes to vegetable purchases, has found that Australians are taking inspiration from cooking shows, including household favorites like My Kitchen Rules and MasterChef.

Respondents also identified cooking websites, such as taste.com.au, as giving them new ideas to bring into the kitchen.

“There’s a world of vegetables for consumers to explore, and it’s great that these media sources are encouraging Australians to branch out into less common options like celeriac and broccolini,” said AUSVEG assistant manager – industry development, Kurt Hermann.

“As the study says, it’s important to ensure that consumers understand the flavor and health benefits that vegetables will add to a dish.

“Highlighting these aspects in a range of vegetables, both on television and online, is clearly leading to real benefits for Australian shoppers.”

representing more than 9000 Australian vegetable and potato growers.

‘Superfoods’ are also proving difficult to resist, with televised and online recipes which spruik the benefits of kale, fennel and bok choy enticing shoppers to try new tastes.

“We know that veggies are a vital part of a healthy diet, and consumers are obviously responding to the increased profile of these ‘superfoods’ and the heavy nutritional punch they pack,” said Mr Hermann.

It was an ideal foil for the steak which cuts with a spoon, its richness leaving a memorable slick across the lips.

Sesame-Miso Vinaigrette

THIS DAY IN HISTORY

Wangaratta declared city, 1959 APRIL 15, 1959 was a historic day for Wangaratta – its declaration as a city.

On the steps of the town hall, the Governor of Victoria, Sir Dallas Brooks, read the official proclamation, and presented Mayor RM (Bob) Donovan with the mayoral chain.

In the afternoon, the Wangaratta showgrounds became the setting for great celebrations, and at night the festivities continued; in fact, they lasted for a week.

I LOVE this dressing.

It is good on a salad of beef, chicken or - as I like it – tofu, it’s just so yummy and moreish.

The sesame seeds add a lovely flavor to it, and if anyone in your household does not like hot chilli, the chilli can be left out for a milder vinaigrette.

All these ingredients can be easily found in your local supermarket.

It also goes well with fish dishes, particularly Asian inspired dishes.

It will last in the fridge for up to a week, but if the vibrancy of this dressing fades, perk it back up with more lime juice.

Enjoy it while the weather is still not too cold.

Keep this recipe handy, because in next week’s edition I will share an Asian noodle salad that pairs perfectly with this vinaigrette.

Method Whisk all ingredients in a small bowl.

Sesame-Miso Vinaigrette > 1 red chilli, with seeds, finely chopped > ¼ cup vegetable oil e > 2 tablespoons fresh lime juic > 2 tablespoons white miso > 1 tablespoon soy sauce > 1 tablespoon unseasoned rice vinegar oil > 1 teaspoon toasted sesame me sesa > 1 teaspoon toasted seeds > ½ teaspoon grated peeled ginger > 1 tablespoon coriander (to garnish)

DESPITE what some menus in pubs and fast food outlets might say, it’s actually not that easy to get your hands on a good piece of Wagyu beef.

It seems to be being ground up and flung onto hot plates everywhere, but the closest that cow came to Wagyu was brushing up against a bull in the yards.

That’s not to say the burger won’t be tasty, but the way to get a sense of the real deal is to get the credit card out and buy a true blue steak.

A grower in the know advises that if it’s on the menu you should ask to see it before it hits the flames, because one look at that cream and candy striped flesh with its exy price tag will say it all.

It’s not pretty, but the taste and texture wows, and letting the heat get all the way through will ensure maximum satisfaction.

We employ a number of clinical nurses, sonographers and support staff.

We wish to employ a person with a nursing degree or tertiary qualifications, who has excellent communication skills, excellent time management skills and the ability to work as part of a multi-disciplined team. Post graduate experience in cardiology and/or respiratory medicine would be an advantage.

Some action at last on financial planners

OUR skin is our largest organ and the way we present to the world.

When we are unhappy with the look of our skin, it can cause a lot of distress.

Of course, we know that a little bit of acne, tinea or eczema is not that big of a deal compared to a life threatening illness, but that does not stop us constantly worrying about how our skin looks and feels.

Some people are lucky enough to inherit gorgeous skin, and can apply any number of creams, soaps or eat what they like, without having any obvious damage to the skin.

Many of us, however, have to work pretty hard to keep our skin happy and healthy.

Because everyone can see our skin as soon as we step outside into the world, our physical skins appearance directly influences the way we view ourselves.

It is easy to think that we only need to watch what we eat when we are overweight or trying to lose weight, but for those of you not blessed with naturally radiant skin, what you eat will play a large role in the health of your skin as will

IT looks like the wait for the Australian Securities and Investment Commission’s (ASIC) register of financial planners, which has now gone live, will assist in weeding out the bad performers in the sector.

This will provide details of all those licensed to provide advice on investments, superannuation and life insurance.

The register on the ASIC Money Smart website at moneysmart.gov.au includes the advisor’s name, registration number, and the advisor’s licence and employment history going back five years.

It shows who owns the financial service’s licence, including the ultimate owner of the company under which the advisor is licensed, together with the products that they can advise on.

It also lists any disqualifications, banning orders or enforceable undertakings.

It would appear from looking at the register that it has already scored some wins for consumers who have taken the time to peruse it, as the four planners who were adversely named in the financial planning scandals at the big banks are not being listed on the register.

The absence of the names on the register means they are no longer working as financial planners, but this does not say they may be working outside of the register as backroom boys, although anyone with a licence would be risking their licence to employ them.

This is an early indication that the register is working as intended with planners with questionable backgrounds leaving the industry.

For too long, quality control in the financial advice industry and a culture of financial product sales have seen consumers vulnerable to shoddy advice.

The new licensing regime requires employers, the licence holders, to supervise their planners and ensure they are honest, competent and ethical.

But as I look at the scandals of the advice arms of some of the banks, I can but wonder how much supervision the banks have been doing of

The register is a good starting point - but there are plenty of things that are not included and possibly should be, such as whether a person has ever been bankrupt and a police check on planners.

To obtain an associate’s licence in a gaming venue you are required to obtain a “National Police Certificate” and a “Credit Report”, so at least in Victoria there are already standards in place.

I also note that employment history only goes back for five years and wonder if this is sufficient.

While the majority of planners are professional, there are a small percentage of unethical planners who will continue to move from employer to employer.

The register is really about ridding the industry of these rotten eggs so perhaps there can be a case for those who have been deregistered to be listed under a listing of deregistered planners which would make it easy to ascertain whether your planner is in fact registered.

But the register will only be as good as employers’ breach reporting and recruitment processes.

Employers are required to make “breach” reports to the regulator when they find a problem with an employee planner that has resulted in, or is likely to result in, “significant” financial losses to their clients.

So, all you investors who in the past have been guided by your accountant or legal representative to talk to a particular financial planner, get on your computer and look up moneysmart.gov.au and see what the site says about the planner suggested.
