FOR the Serpell sisters Jenny and Liz, their childhood consisted of happily exploring bushland for hours on end, and joining joyous community events at the aptly named Happy Valley Hall. Jenny (now Jenny John) remembers her father, Hugh, constantly drawing and painting the landscape, while their mother, Bessie, was also handy with a sketchbook and pencil. Liz, a prolific mosaic maker, said she has many indelible memories of the Happy Valley Hall as the centre of community life, from the frivolity of Christmas parties to the tradition of Sunday church services. “It’s a place we’re very fond of,” she said. Early next month, the historic hall will be home to the Art in the Valley exhibition, a showcase of a range of art, such as ceramics, sculpture, photography, mosaics and prints, from artists with a connection to the friendly Happy Valley/Rosewhite community, including both Liz and Jenny. Mrs John said she has fond memories of an idyllic youth in the area. “We just had the most wonderful childhood, and we knew every nook and cranny of the countryside,” Mrs John said. “Life on a farm in the valley brings back so many wonderful memories.” Now based in Melbourne, she added that while her long artistic career has ranged from teaching to creating art all over the country, both her painting and ceramic art was heavily influenced by her love of rural Australia. “The country has always been a part of my artistic endeavours.” She said she was looking forward to connecting with the community at the upcoming exhibition and meeting the other artists involved. continued page |
