FROM a long career in nursing to being involved with the work of Friends of Lacluta, Whorouly woman Liz Walpole has had a lifelong desire to help others. She has been part of the long established Friends of Lacluta group, which works to find ways to help and empower the people and community of Lacluta, since its inception just over a decade ago, and Liz said she felt drawn to help the Lacluta people. “I’ve got a real love for the people over there,” she said. With Christmas just around the corner, her efforts, and the efforts of other group members and supporters, continue to be focused on their latest project to empower young girls and give them better access to education. The More Days For Girls initiative helps provide washable and reusable sanitary supplies for girls, which in turn enables them to attend more school - as those not properly equipped typically stay home from school. With proper care, the supplies can last for up to three years, helping provide dignity for the female students of Lacluta and giving them confidence and drive to fully participate in their education. As well as people from Myrtleford and Wangaratta working hard in recent months making the supplies, Liz said that many people across the region have contributed to the campaign by purchasing $20 fundraising Christmas cards for their loved ones. A self-described feminist, she said she is passionate about helping the women in the Lacluta district achieve equal access to education and opportunities, and added that through her career as a nurse, as well as raising her own family, she can have plenty of input on the needs of women and girls. continued page |
