FOR a small group of intrepid North East residents, the rush of a river, splash of a lake, or the roar of the ocean is their happy place. The North East Canoe Club was formed just a few years ago and has grown to become a close knit community of all ages. The club, which has members from a range of local towns including Wangaratta, Beechworth, Myrtleford, Bright, Albury/Wodonga and Mt Beauty, has grown to the point where they are now set to host the international Reel Paddling Film Festival in Oxley next month. Ian Minns, who has been with the club for three years, has had a passion for canoeing and related pursuits since his youth. “The attraction for me is that you can do lots of different things,” he said of his love of canoeing. “To me, one of the great things is being out in the natural environment.” Ian said that paddling around local waterways is also a treat for anyone who loves seeing wildlife in their natural habitat, such as platypi and lots of bird life. Over the years, he has paddled in a number of different waterways and places, from sea kayaking off the coast of Tasmania to exploring the rivers and creeks of the North East. “It’s a fairly family oriented club,” Ian said. “It’s great, being part of a team. “And I love to introduce new people to the sport.” Ian has a few favourite paddling spots, but he especially loves getting out on the King and Mitta Mitta rivers, and enjoys the tranquillity of some of the anabranches of the Murray River. Fellow Wangaratta resident and member Allison Parkinson, and her family, have relished learning new skills as part of the club, and said the outings are an ideal chance to enjoy time together with the family. continued page |

I HAVE to hand it to Apple. They have truly perfected the art of crafting overpriced technological devices that go out of their way to inconvenience people yet still manage to sell like hotcakes. How do they do it? It could be explained by savvy marketing techniques in combination with the fostering of a die-hard consumer base in the early 2000’s, but I’m not so sure about that. Afterall, I’ve witnessed large technology brands make terrible business choices that resulted in catastrophic failures plenty of times before. In addition to that, Apple love to make the retail availability of their products difficult in many circumstances Which tells me that, just like sex, pretentiousness sells too. It taps into our inner-child, the little brat that hates to be told they can’t have something and will badger their parents into submission only to discover the cool new G.I. Joe doesn’t
actually fly like the T.V advert misled them to believe. Apple’s latest questionable move was to remove the headphone/auxiliary jack from the base of the new iphone 7 and instead sell wireless earbuds, named ‘Airpods’, at a whopping AU $229. I think Apple may have finally bitten off more than they can chew with this one. Not only do the earbuds look like a fashion disaster, they utilise notoriously unreliable bluetooth technology, and only have a 5 hour battery life before they require charging. In addition, they are small and easy to lose. Apple will be providing it’s customers with an auxiliary adapter for regular headphones which plugs into the lightning charge point on the phone. But this workaround means that you won’t be able to charge the phone and use headphones at the same time. After flowering has finished, leave the green foliage on the plants until it dies down and yellows off. The green leaves produce the energy needed to form next year’s flower buds. Growing bulbs from seed is not a reliable process for home gardeners and takes many years. It’s how new hybrids are developed. There are always exceptions. Snowdrops propagate easily from self-sown seeds and naturalise freely in the garden, giving you more flowers each year. Most daffodils and jonquils multiply by growing offsets or baby bulbs, which grow to form clumps. Propagation is done by digging up clumps in the garden and separating the bulbs. These can then be replanted individually or in small groups. This can be done as soon as flowering has finished while the foliage is still intact. It makes it easier to identify the location of the bulbs and any bare spots in the garden. Happy gardening.

THE spring flowering bulbs are putting on a spectacular show in my garden this year, especially the daffodils and jonquils, which are naturalising nicely in a garden bed along the driveway. Others are dotted throughout perennial and annual garden beds, with their spring flowers peering out above the green foliage of neighbouring plants. The main bulb garden is five years old, with new bulbs planted under the deciduous fruit trees each year. Most are in full bloom with some still to open. The first to appear were the white Snowdrops, followed by the cream perfumed flowers of Erlicheer. The golden yellow of the large ‘King Alfred’ daffodils makes a bold statement but the highlight this year is the eagerly awaited display of daffodils featuring ruffled frills and double flowers in pink, orange, red and white colour schemes. To keep bulbs looking good and to encourage a longer flowering period, feed with a liquid fertiliser fortnightly. Keep the soil moist during the growing season but reduce watering after the foliage begins to die back. Remove or dead-head spent flowers regularly so the plant looks tidier and directs its energy into producing next year’s bulbs rather than setting seed.

Vaccinations: Why the jab? VACCINATIONS are critical to your pet’s health and well being. Unfortunately, there are still several potentially deadly diseases that exist nowadays. For cats, vaccination can protect against viruses which cause severe contagious diarrhoea (panleukopenia), severe cat flu (calicivirus and rhinotracheitis) and the feline aids virus (FIV). In dogs, vaccination can protect against viruses which cause severe and crippling diseases (morbillivirus distemper, parvovirus, adenovirus) as well as highly contagious respiratory disease (canine cough). Just like any vaccine given to our human family members, your pet’s vaccine is a weakened non-living version of the virus that boosts their immune system. So, if your pet is ever exposed to the real disease their immune system will be prepared to recognise it and fight it
off, either entirely or reduce the severity of the illness. Undoubtedly the reason why our part of the world has the happiest and healthiest pets is due to vaccination (also called herd protection effect). However, losing track of your pet’s vaccination status can happen. Adopting a new pet or moving house may mean that it can be hard to stay on top of things. However, it is never too late to recommit to a vaccination plan, it is such an easy aspect of pet care and your vet is here to help. The family has participated in a range of the club’s activities, including overnight camps and come and try days. And she said the club is grateful for the support of the community and local government, including a grant from the Rural City of Wangaratta, which provided equipment suitable to teach children about paddling. For Myrtleford paddler Richard Maclean, the club has been a great way to share the “exciting vibe around paddling”, and take his daughters on some of the paddling excursions. Richard loves to head out on the Ovens River near home, where “there are some fun white water rapids and a it is a great escape from work and renovations”. Other favourite spots include the King River and the Ovens River at Bright. The Reel Paddling Film Festival will take place at the Oxley Shire Hall on Saturday, October 8.

Trout, golden perch biting BY ROB ALEXANDER, WANGARATTA
I HAVE had reports of trout flooding in from every direction. The major rivers are all very high, however I have heard reports of good trout fishing in both the Kiewa River near Mt Beauty and the Mitta Mitta River near Eskdale. Many anglers have been having success around the region in the smaller creeks with worms being the best bait in dirty water and bright coloured lures working well in the creeks which are slightly clearer. Lake Hume and Lake Nillahcootie have both been fishing quite well for golden perch. Both lakes have filled very quickly this winter and the golden perch have been out feeding in the shallow water on the newly submerged grassy flats. I stopped at the Lake Buffalo boat ramp one evening last week on my way back from a trout fishing trip up into the Buffalo River. I decided to flick a few soft plastics around the boat ramp and see if I could pick up a golden perch. While I did not catch any golden’s, I did manage three small redfin. They were only small fish but are a positive sign that the action is starting to heat up across the region. I have had a report of several nice brown trout being caught in Lake Buffalo which is unusual. I hear of the odd one here and there, but rarely do I hear of trout being caught in Lake Buffalo in good numbers.

Electricity for Wangaratta, 1922 FORTY-ONE years after the first power stations opened in England and America, electricity came to Wangaratta on September 14, 1922. While the use of electricity in the town was discussed as early as 1888, things were quiet until in 1921 the council received a proposal from the new Woollen Mills to supply the town with power. The go-ahead was given and the grand switch-on was held on this day.

kenclarke11@bigpond.com WHEN I commenced writing this column in August 2011 it was to be for a three month trial. Some five years and 250 plus columns later this will be my last for some time. My reason for not continuing is that I have decided to put my name forward as a candidate in the forthcoming Rural City of Wangaratta council elections, and believe that neither I nor North East Media Pty Ltd should be seen as having a conflict of interest in this decision.
I sincerely thank the management and staff of North East Media Pty Ltd, who, apart from an early column, have accepted and published my writings as I have written them in their entirety. To my readers - and there have been many who have stopped me in the street or sent me an email or telephoned - it has been your positive acceptance and plain English reading that has seen me continue with my columns. I HAVE heard about the “50 shades of grey” but my reading this week included reading about the “Omnibus savings bill” and some of the nasties included in it, with one commentator saying it was “24 shades of nasty”. HECS, or HELP as it is now called, has been the cornerstone of many students being able to attend university and pay later when their income reached around $55,000. This has reduced to a little less than $52,000. Those in early childhood education, nursing, teaching, mathematics and science courses will no longer receive a Rudd Government discount of $1700 to $1800 a year from their HELP debt. And the big change here will be that low income students will have to take up a loan (repayable of course) which is replacing the “start-up” scholarship to pay for textbooks and course equipment. Those former “Newstart” recipients who obtain and keep their job for a year will no longer be eligible to get a job
commitment bonus of $2500 in the first year and $4000 in the next. The National Health Performance Authority set up by Rudd/Gillard has already been abolished. This authority was producing comparative reports of individual hospital performance. The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare will now be responsible but there will be a saving of $88.6 million as they will not receive any rise in funding. With the previously announced freeze on thresholds for Private Health Insurance for a few more years, singles approaching incomes of $90,000 and families with incomes of $180,000 failing to have private health insurance will see you paying the Medicare Levy Surcharge. Aged care facilities will have less money to spend on residents due to the government crackdown on government subsidies paid. And new residents in aged care who continue to own and rent out their former family home will now have the rental income included in

More broadly, other initiatives currently in progress include the development of a practical Strategic Plan designed to align the team with long-term goals, and a focus on supporting and developing Merriwa’s front line leaders.

The carers allowance will no longer be able to be backdated either. If you have an unpaid welfare debt, you will now be charged interest of nine per cent on the debt unless you enter into a repayment arrangement. The six year limit on debt recovery has also been abolished, so if you don’t pay you can expect to be hounded by the debt collectors until your death. These are just a summary of some of the 24 “shades of nasty” so keep looking over your shoulder. But I can’t find anywhere that pollies are losing any of their benefits so I guess I will have to keep looking.
