SOCIAL fulfilment can be challenging for someone living with dementia or agerelated memory loss and their carer.
That’s why VMCH (Villa Maria Catholic Homes) has launched a number of dementia-friendly social support groups across Victoria through their Carer Support program.
By GRACE FREDSBERG

Carer engagement o cer at VMCH, Catherine Smith, said the group is open to the person living with dementia or age-related memory loss and their carer.

Every fortnight, VMCH is o ering croquet at the Wangaratta Lawns, Tennis, Croquet and Pickleball Club (WLTCPC) at Merriwa Park from 1pm to 2.30pm.
This is the first time that the VMCH Carers Program has rolled out a social group like this to support the older populations of the North East.

“A dementia diagnosis doesn’t mean giving up on participating on social and recreational opportunities, but often confidence is lost, or anxieties are high, and the risk of isolation increases,” she said.
She said these groups aim to provide a

positive, familiar social experience for the carer and the person living with dementia or memory loss, through meeting new people and trying a new activity.
“These dementia friendly social support groups encourage quality time between the person with dementia and their loved one in a caring role that isn’t just errands and medical appointments,” Catherine said.

PETS, much like people, can experience pain - but unlike people, they’re often unable or unwilling to show it openly.
Dogs and cats, in particular, are known for hiding their discomfort, making it di cult for owners to recognise when something is wrong.
Understanding the subtle signs of pain can make a big di erence in your pet’s wellbeing.
Dogs: Masters of stoicism
Dogs are naturally stoic animals.
Many signs of pain in dogs are subtle, develop gradually and are often behaviour-based.
Because of this, discomfort may go unnoticed for a long time.
Common signs of pain in dogs include:
• Trouble sleeping or getting comfortable;
• Di culty rising or lying down;
• Reluctance to sit;
• Panting, whining, or yelping;
• Limping or di culty walking;
• Caution on slippery surfaces such as tiles;

• Trouble crouching to go to the toilet;
• Accidents in the house;
• Avoidance of touch, grooming, or being picked up.
Cats: Experts at concealment
Cats are even more adept than dogs at concealing their pain.
Rather than limping or crying out, they tend to exhibit minor behavioural changes that are easy to miss.
Pain in cats is often revealed through shifts in posture, attitude, facial expression and routine.
Possible indicators of pain in cats include:
• Poor grooming habits;
• Toileting outside the litter tray;
• Sti ness or di culty with stairs and jumping;
• Decreased appetite;
• Swishing tail, flattened ears or swiping when touched;
• Restlessness;

• Heightened anxiety, fear or irritability;
• Unusual vocalisations;
• Laboured or rapid breathing.
Why early detection matters:
Recognising these small cues allows you to take protective action early.
Speak with your veterinarian if you notice any of these behaviours.
Early intervention can significantly reduce discomfort and improve your pet’s quality of life.
Your pet may not be able to tell you when something’s wrong - but by paying close attention, you can be their voice.
FLAGS were set to raise all over the countryside on a signal given by the Duchess of York in Melbourne on this day in 1901.
For Wangaratta School No 643 (Wangaratta Primary School) the logistics of the flag raising were fairly easily worked out, with the school being almost within sight of the telegraph o ce.
At 12.50pm, when the signal flashed out to all telegraph stations, Wangaratta postmaster Mr Brown waved a handkerchief from the upper window of the telegraph o ce to a teacher up on a ladder at the school who relayed it to the party at the flagpole.
The huge flag, a special gift from the Mayor, Cr Sisley, was then run up the pole by Master Les Smith, the oldest Cadet of the local Corps.

THE first frosts of the year have arrived, and water temperatures are plummeting.
Recently I have started catching a few Murray crayfish on my fishing lines while targeting finned fish.
Crayfishing season does not start until 1 June, so we are not allowed to target them yet, but just seeing them starting to turn up as a by-catch is a great sign for the season ahead.
It is also an indication of how cold the water now is.
I have been fishing in and around Wangaratta with bait quite a bit recently and I have been catching a few fish too.
I have noticed that the afternoons are pretty quiet with few bites, but if I stay until dark, and even after dark I tend to get more bites and catch more fish.
Over the last couple of weeks I have caught one Macquarie perch and a whole heap of trout cod just using worms as bait at, and after sunset.
The Murray cod have been very quiet, although I have picked up three yellowbelly - but only one

was big enough to keep though.
I mentioned that the Murray cod have been very quiet, that was until yesterday.
My friend Sonny and I put our kayaks on the lower Ovens River, downstream of Wangaratta.
Between us we hooked about 12 fish - I landed three Murray cod and Sonny landed three Murray cod and we both lost a few each.
The fish were all caught (and lost) fishing with lures from our kayaks.
That is typical of Murray cod in the autumn months, all or nothing.
Sonny went lure fishing for cod a few times last week and caught nothing, and then BANG! They were going bonkers.
That’s autumn Murray cod fishing in a nutshell.

SHARED BENEFITS: A hearing assessment is informative for the hearing-impaired person and their partner. PHOTO: Summit Art Creations / Shutterstock.com. INSET: Audiology results. PHOTO: Wangaratta Audiology.
THERE may come a time in a couple’s relationship when communication becomes more di cult. Frustrations can arise when one person finds themselves saying “hey?” or “what?” more often to their partner.
This is not unusual and is one of the most common reasons that someone gets a hearing test.
Often in these situations, they attend alone.
On average it takes over seven years for someone to take action regarding their hearing loss once they suspect there is an issue.
This is partly because they feel it does not a ect those around them.
We at Wangaratta Audiology feel that the partners and significant others of hearing impaired people are missing out on key benefits by not attending these appointments, as they are also affected by their partner’s hearing loss.
At a hearing assessment, if a hearing loss is diagnosed, this will be explained by an audiologist.
This is not only helpful for the person with the loss, but also assists to educate partners about the experience of hearing loss, and can give them a better appreciation of the challenges their loved one is facing.
There are often moments of clarity in these discussions when the audiologist confirms that the difficulties experienced at home are in fact consistent with the hearing assessment results.
It may mean that having a conversation three rooms away while the kettle is boiling is too di cult.
While this may seem obvious, to hear it from the impartial audiologist is helpful for both parties.
When there is a shared understanding of the

problem, then there is common ground to begin tactics that can help make communication easier.
A comprehensive hearing assessment may last over an hour.
By having another person in the appointment, there is a greater chance of important information being remembered accurately.
This is particularly important when it comes to taking on medical information and discussing hearing aid choices.
To have both partners present is often helpful in determining the financial commitment to hearing aids if these are prescribed for the hearing loss and selecting devices that meet the needs of both.
There is no taking of sides in an appointment.
Whatever challenges are faced at home, it is likely the audiologist has heard similar stories before.
By having a partner present, there is a perspective that the audiologist will be interested in learning from.
This will form the basis of a shared e ort to get back to better communication between the hearing-impaired person, their partner and their audiologist.
If you (and a significant other) would like to make an appointment at Wangaratta Audiology with one of our audiologists, contact the clinic on (03) 5722 4433.
Everyone deserves to communicate.

Their fi rst session was held on Thursday, 8 May, with more expected to follow.
VMCH Wangaratta support worker Bonnie Jackson, who supervised the session, said the sunny weather and a healthy dose of vitamin D was a great way to debut the session.
“It’s really important for mental health, to be out in the sun,” she said.
Bonnie said these support groups are helpful for the client and the person with dementia, and o er a like-minded community of people undertaking a similar journey.
“There’s people like me who can help care for the
client for an hour or two and help to lighten the load,” she said.
She said Steve Leitl, who lives with dementia, is wellversed in the world of golfing and fi shing and playing croquet will help him relearn some of those similar movements.
“Seeing that muscle memory come back to him has been really cool,” Bonnie said.
“He’s just picked it up straight away.”
Cheryle Leitl, wife and carer of Steve, said she looks forward to following through with the program.
“My husband used to play a lot of sport... but now that he’s not able to pursue those sports anymore, we
thought we’d try something di erent,” she said.
According to Catherine, most carer programs are funded for the carer only, which is why the Dementia Friendly Communities grant from Dementia Australia has been so invaluable.
Catherine said the grant has given the VMCH Carer Support program the platform to organise activities for both the carer and their loved one.
“These programs support community organisations to become more dementia aware and also encourage those living with dementia and their carers to join in in a safe and welcoming environment,” she said.
She extended her appre-
ciation to the Croquet Club at the WLTCPC for collaborating with VMCH and supporting the project from the get-go.
“If there is interest then the organisation would look at how to continue providing support, based on the ideas and feedback of this particular community.”
Catherine also said participants do not need to be clients of VMCH, but registering for the group will allow you to be up-to-date with upcoming sessions.
