◆ FRESH START: Dan and Jos Ceccanti, pictured here with Jos’s daughter Poppy Scherf, are among the new team that has taken over the reins of the Mt Beauty Music Festival. PHOTO: Alex Craig

by KYLIE WILSON A MUSIC loving husband and wife team are among a fresh batch of community residents who are busy revamping the long running Mt Beauty Music Festival. While last year the festival was looking like it may fold, a fresh team of local residents have poured their efforts into revamping the event, and are excited about both their community and the changes ahead. Among the new committee are Jos and Dan Ceccanti, with Jos taking the reins as committee president. Jos said she initially got involved in the festival as the station manager at Alpine Radio. “Working in radio, I have found a real passion for live music, with studio performances and live gigs,” she said. “I love the realness, the engagement with the audience, and the whole experience.” Curious about the festival, Jos and Dan attended a festival AGM, and things just grew from there. When the festival looked to be heading into recess – or folding altogether - the couple sprang into action. “I managed to get a group of people together to take it over, a whole fresh new committee,” Jos said. Time for employers to get ready for Single Touch Payroll THE Australian Tax OfďŹ ce (ATO) is urging employers with 20 or more employees to act now and prepare for Single Touch Payroll (STP) – the next step in streamlining payroll reporting. From July 1, 2018, employers will need to report their employees’ tax and super information to the ATO through payroll software that is STP ready. Assistant commissioner, John Shepherd, said STP will provide greater transparency and connect businesses to the ATO through their existing software. “Single Touch Payroll is a gamechanger for both employers and the ATO. This will allow employers to be able to meet their reporting obligations to us using their own payroll or accounting software. “Many employers will be able to update their existing payroll software to a version that is Single Touch Payroll ready. “Employers with 20 or more employees who do not use payroll software will need to choose a product that offers STP by July 1, 2018. “Employers need to start preparing now in order to be ready for this important reporting change,â€? Mr Shepherd said. The next steps to get ready for STP: ĆşÇ? ĎŀĎŇÇ? ĂŠĹ‡ÄÇ Ä ÄĹœÇ ĂŠĹ‘Ç‡Ĺ€Ĺ‡ÄšÇ? ÊħçÇ? çĭĹ?ħǑ load our ‘Get ready checklist’. We have developed a number of resources including factsheets, checklists, information packs and advice on how to manage headcount. These are all available to download on the ATO website.â€? Mr Shepherd said. Employers with 19 or less employees have another year to prepare, however they can choose to start reporting through STP prior to July 1, 2019 if their software is updated. with MANDI MCDONALD, Gardening Specialist â—† DIG IN: Now is a good time to prepare your garden and plant bulbs, for plenty of colour later in the year.

Prepare now for bulb planting WELL, it is ofďŹ cially autumn on the calendar, but the weather doesn’t seem to be on the same page. Unfortunately, this means we have to keep watering our pots and gardens. It is easy to become complacent as the evenings and mornings are cool but it is still very dry and plants will be suffering after a long dry summer. The good new is it’s the season to start thinking about planting your bulbs for late winter and spring colour. You still have plenty of time but it’s a good idea to prepare the areas you are going to be planting bulbs in so they are ready when the weather cools off a bit. Digging in compost or well rotted manure will improve the structure of your soil and give the bulbs a good start.

Sapphire Cove

0418 640 418

It’s good to get some of the bulbs in while there is still some warmth in the ground. Tulips on the other hand are more than happy to wait until it is quite cold to be planted. You can put them in the crisper of your fridge to chill them for a few weeks prior to planting. I generally ďŹ nd that our winters are cold enough for them to ower well if you plant them around July after we’ve had a few good frosts to chill the ground. There is a good range of bulbs available at the nursery this month. It is lovely to see the subtle changing of the season in the garden. There is a hint of autumn colour showing which gives us the hope that we will get a reprieve from the long dry summer soon.

FEATURE STORY

When your fur family adds a human HAVING a baby is a very exciting time for your family and many changes lie ahead for you and your fur children. Changes to their routine, their sleeping arrangements and access to areas of the house or to you, their parents, can cause stress or anxiety for your pets. There are several things you can do to help minimise the disruption to your pet and the first thing is tell them you are pregnant. They may not understand the ultrasound pictures or the adorable outfits you start to purchase but by making changes to their life before the baby arrives you allow them time to adjust and they will be less likely to build any negative associations with their new friend. Some things to consider from the moment you know you are pregnant are: ƺǝ Dÿǝ Ũĭőļǝ ħëŝǝ àÊàŨǛŀǝ ļĭőŇĎħëǝ Ďŀǝ likely to affect your pet’s routine make these changes as soon as possible (from the time you find out you are expecting) eg feeding time, walking time, the time they are inside or outside. ƺǝ Dÿǝ ÊħŨǝ ÊļëÊŀǝ ŝĎğğǝ àëáĭĦëǝ ǘĭÿÿǝ limits” to pets once bub is here, make them restricted now. Once your baby is born, having a family member or your partner bring home worn baby clothes from the hospital can help them to become familiar with the baby before they arrive home, and always make sure your baby is not left unattended with pets. A great resource available is “Tell your dog you are pregnant” or “Tell your cat you are pregnant” by Dr Lewis Kirkham. This book has step by step instructions as well as soundtracks to help desensitise your pet. Remember you can also talk to your local veterinarian for advice as having a baby is a big adjustment for every member of the family.

Ŷ From page 1 “We are striving to bring the community something special and introducing some new elements to the festival, based on our family background and the importance of entertaining the whole family to enjoy the festival. “We have also tried to simplify the festival and focus on bringing tourism to the town. “It has been a lot of work as we have started from scratch, I have spent too many hours to mention, but I have loved every minute of it. “We are hoping previous festival goers, the locals and visitors support our festival as these things are essential in small communities.” Jos said the festival revamp has even spread to its logo – a Bogong Moth, signifying rebirth and renewal. While the festival is smaller this year, featuring musical favourites The Northern Folk, Charm of Finches and The Hot Springs, the committee is building to a full scale festival in 2019. “We have chosen three bands that reflect the image of the direction of the festival, bringing vibrance and growth,” Jos said. “These bands are all in the festival circuit and have a good strong following and reputation for quality entertainment.” Dan added that the festival is also collaborating with Alpine Shire for a FReeZA event earlier in the day. “We are hoping that this will join the two for future festivals,” he said, adding that he also wants to help strengthen the connection between the Bright and Mt Beauty communities,” he said. As a mother, and a local resident, Jos said she wanted to work towards something to benefit the local community. “I moved here 11 years ago, from

◆ CHAMPION EFFORT: Young fishing legend James Thewlis caught this magnificent Murray cod on a pink and silver home made spinnerbait at Lake Mulwala recently.

A FEW times lately I have mentioned that the Murray cod fishing will be hot and cold at this time of the year in the Wangaratta area. Well this week I backed that up with three evening fishing sessions chasing Murray cod locally. The first session I fished for three hours and caught five Murray cod, all around the 45-55cm size - the fishing was mad, Since that evening I have been out twice and have not had a touch. This is the typical autumn Murray cod fishing in North East Victoria that I have been talking about recently, and will continue for the next six weeks or so. During the week my dad Terry Alexander and a fishing mate went to Lake Nillahcootie and had an amaz-

with ROB ALEXANDER, Wangaratta ing session chasing yellowbelly. Most of their fish were caught on live shrimp, with small yabbies being ignored by the yellowbelly. Dad said that they thought they were going to go home fishless as they had caught nothing for quite a while. They kept moving around until they found a school of yellowbelly and then the fishing was red hot.

I have had a few reports of trout being caught in several streams around the region. The water is very low in a lot of the smaller creeks, and some have even dried up. As many anglers are not keen to surrender the location of their catches, I have no idea where they have been caught. One thing that I do know is that the trout have been caught locally, the water is cooling and any stream that does have trout in it will be worth fishing at the moment provided the stream has a decent flow of water. The streams that are just trickling will have trout sitting at the bottom of the deep holes sulking, waiting for autumn rain to come and deliver fresh water before they go on a feeding frenzy.

Take time out to relax and de-stress THE common reason people present to a naturopath is because they are tired. So, unfortunately, chronic exhaustion is an all too common scenario in the patients that I see. Fatigue presents to me in all its different disguises - insomnia, depression, low mood, anxiety, irritability, grumpiness, chronic infections, loss of libido, lack of mojo and drive, loss of passion or purpose through to chronic fatigue. When we are tired we are not at our best, we can’t concentrate, we are scattered, we are fragile and we forget that the best medicine for being tired is free. If my patients are answering yes to the following questions, they will

These are all signs that you are in need of a mini break, time out or a holiday. Taking an exotic overseas holiday might be a luxury, but taking time out should be something we can all afford and have the right to access. Without minibreaks, occasional sleep-ins and schedule free days, we end up tired and wired. Herbs, nutrients, food and exercise can all help with your energy, but the most powerful medicine for someone who is tired, exhausted or stressed is to acknowledge that they are in need of time out to rest, sleep and recover and to find a way to make this happen regularly enough to rebuild their energy.

FOOD TALK

WINE TALK

Rutherglen Estates 2015 Durif WHEN a popular American burger chain set up a pop-up shop in Melbourne, hoards of punters lined the footpath only to be turned away in minutes after the outlet ran out of stock. It may have been just a savvy marketing ploy, but it goes to show just how popular the cheap and cheesy beef sandwich continues to be, decades after it was invented. While the sweet, soft and salty American versions may have a strong following, they’re nothing like the Aussie style burgers we used to get at the fish and chippy. They came plain or with the lot, often bulging with pineapple, dripping with gooey egg and with beetroot sliding out the side.

with ANITA McPHERSON It was a hearty meal packed into a flat-grilled bun, all stuffed inside a paper bag. It’s a taste I try to reproduce at home, only now it comes with a big red instead of a chocolate Big M. A meaty burger is great with a glass of Rutherglen Estate Durif. This very dark, burgundy coloured, full bodied wine has a rich, redolent aroma of blackberry and plum. The flavour is deep, lush and quite complex, jam-packed with fruity goodness but balanced with savoury spice and a warming toastiness which stays with you long after the first taste. It’s substantial and satisfying, which is why it goes so well with that juicy beef patty. There are definitely some things Aussies just know how to do better than anyone else.

Series is a conversation starter for families Channel Chat SHOW: My Year 7 Life CHANNEL: ABC ME TIME: 4.30pm Monday, repeated 3.30pm Sunday and on iview with SIMONE KERWIN ANYTHING that keeps the lines of communication open between young people and their parents/carers is a great idea. And that’s just what ABC ME series ‘My Year 7 Life’ offers families with youngsters heading towards or dealing with the transition from primary to secondary school. Developed in the same vein as last year’s ‘My Year 12 Life’, the 18 part series follows 16 youngsters from varying backgrounds, who were armed with cameras to document

their move into year seven. The beauty of the series is that you hear in the kids’ own words, filmed in their most unguarded moments, about what concerns and excites them as they tackle what can be a tumultuous life change. So if you’re after a refresher about what issues these youngsters may be facing, or need some tips on secondary school life in the digital age, it’s a handy tool, especially as it also features expert insight from psychologist Charlotte Keating. My advice, though, is to watch it with your kids if it’s on their viewing schedule; some of the youngsters on the show love to dramatically outline any obstacles in their paths, which could present an unnecessarily negative view for anyone yet to enter secondary school. But when it comes to issues like homework, behaviour, expectations, relationships and bullying, it can be a helpful conversation starter.

THIS WEEK’S TV HIGHLIGHTS: This is Us (Wednesday, 8.30pm, WIN): Can make you laugh, cry, and remember we’re all in this together, sometimes within the space of a minute. Bondi Rescue (Tuesday, 7.30pm, WIN): Summer may be over, but you can still head to the beach with the Bondi lifeguards. The Human Body (Tuesday, 8.30pm, ABC): Twin doctors Chris and Xand, of Operation Ouch fame, show the amazing way our bodies develop and work, from the inside out, in this three part series. CHANGING TIMES: Rosie is among the young people featured in ‘My Year 7 Life’.
