FOR over five years, Chesney Vale woman Freida Andrews has been working with and advocating for people who have come to Australia in search of a better life.

Freida said she is among those in the North East continually working to raise public awareness of the hardships endured by refugees and asylum seekers.

She is so passionate about the issue that she founded the Northern Victoria Refugee Support Network to better connect the many community groups and organisations across the region who are working to address and improve the situation for refugees and people seeking asylum.

The network facilitates communication and information sharing between community groups, supporting them to raise the profile of refugees and people seeking asylum.

The network also works within a long term perspective to develop and implement strategies that ensure that a humane, compassionate approach is taken to meet their needs.

Freida said there is a lot of great work being done by various grassroots groups around the region. Ŷ Continued page 3

Rising expenses stopping Aussies from getting ahead DESPITE improved job conditions and households reporting healthier financial buffers, the overall financial comfort of Australians is not advancing, according to ME’s latest Household Financial Comfort Report.

In its latest survey, ME’s Household Financial Comfort Index remained stuck at 5.49 out of 10, with improvements in some measures of financial comfort linked to better employment conditions – eg a greater ability to maintain a lifestyle if income was lost for three months – offset by a fall in comfort with living expenses.

“Households’ comfort with paying their monthly living expenses fell three per cent to 6.40 out of 10 during the six months to December 2017, the lowest it’s been since mid-2014,” said Jeff Oughton, ME consulting economist and co-author of the report.

“In fact, ME’s latest report shows many households’ financial situation is getting worse and again the culprit is living expenses, with 40 per cent reporting this as a key reason their situation is worsening.

“Around 46 per cent of households surveyed also cited the cost of necessities such as fuel, utilities and groceries as one of their biggest worries.

“It’s unsurprising households are still feeling the pinch, given subdued income growth and the rising costs of energy, childcare, education and health.

“The rising cost of necessities is currently holding Australians back when it comes to their finances.”

Oughton said that over the past year, 16 per cent of households were not always able to pay their utility bills on time, while 19 per cent sought financial help from

family or friends and 13 per cent pawned or sold something to buy necessities – a clear illustration of bill stress, particularly for those on lower incomes.

In other findings from the ABS, childcare costs have doubled in the past six years, while the cost of primary and secondary education has increased by 50 per cent.

But Oughton said one household group of Australians is bucking the trend.

“Households under 35 years old without children – commonly dubbed the ‘avocado generation’ − many of whom have benefited from improved employment conditions without the burden of childcare costs or potentially a mortgage, are not as worried.

“Their financial comfort rose by eight per cent, and their comfort with living expenses increased two per cent during 2017.”

Oughton said the report’s most encouraging result was households’ improved ability to maintain a lifestyle, if income was lost for three months, which rose three per cent to 4.82 out of 10 in the past six months to December 2017 – its highest outcome since 2015.

Good versus bad ladybeetles THERE are numerous types of ladybeetle that you will find in your garden.

The common ladybeetle that most of us would be familiar with is a natural predator.

They love to feed on aphids, scale and mites.

This ladybeetle is dark orange with only a few spots on each wing and a larger spot in the middle.

The ladybeetle that is not welcome in your garden is the 28 spotted ladybird.

It is a lighter orange and has 28 spots as the name suggests.

No need to count them, the difference is quite obvious!

This ladybeetle can be very destructive in the vegetable garden.

Both the larvae and adult feed on the leaves of the plant.

The main varieties of plant they attack are the curcurbits - zucchini, melons, cucumbers etc.

The adults will be found of top of the leaves while the larvae and eggs will be lurking on the underside. The larvae are yellow with fine hairs all over their body.

The eggs are laid in a small cluster and are easily squashed.

The most effective way to get rid of these pests is to pick them off by hand.

This may sound time consuming

but it is a good job to do when you are out watering the garden.

The adults are about 7-10mm long and are easy to see on the leaves.

They do fly very well so squash them or drop them in a small bucket with a little methylated spirits in it.

They are especially attracted to plants that are already weakened by heat stress and dry conditions so make sure you keep the plants consistently moist.

It may seem as if we are constantly battling pests and diseases in the vegetable patch but there is still no taste like home grown.

Raw chicken meat dangerous for dogs MANY owners of dogs, particularly smaller breeds, like to feed their pets raw chicken necks.

Dogs love the taste, and many owners believe they are beneficial for their teeth.

However, a recent study from Melbourne University links consumption of raw chicken meat with acute polyradiculoneuritis (APN), a serious paralysing condition.

The University estimates about 300 dogs in Victoria are affected with APN each year through eating raw chicken.

APN has been around for a long time, but until recently the cause of the debilitating condition has been a mystery.

It is now believed that the bacteria Campylobacter, often found in raw chicken, triggers the dog’s immune system, causing it to attack its own nerve roots.

APN is the canine equivalent to Guillain-Barre syndrome in humans.

It results in an ascending paralysis, stating with weakness of the hind limbs which then progresses to involve the front legs,

Affected dogs may eventually recover, but it often takes six months or more of intensive nursing care, and the condition can be fatal if the chest muscles governing breathing become affected.

Raw or incompletely cooked chicken is frequently contaminated with bacteria and is a common source of gastrointestinal infections (ie “food poisoning”) in both pets and humans.

And if dog owners need yet another reason to stay away from raw chicken necks: dogs that we treat for constipation have often been fed chicken necks in the preceding days.

Chicken meat can be safely fed to dogs as long as it is thoroughly cooked and the bones removed.

For dental care, prescription dental diets, dog chews, and teeth brushing are far safer options.

A regular visitor to people seeking asylum being detained at Melbourne Immigration Transit Accommodation (MITA), she said she has seen security measures continually tighten around visiting, impacting negatively on not just the detainees themselves, but also the members of the community – including family members - visiting them.

“How Australia uses detention is a major concern for me personally,” Freida said.

“I think most Australians would say ‘we can do this better’.

“I believe that fear has become a large issue when it comes to refugees,” she said, adding that our current political environment supports this.

“It’s a global problem,” Freida said.

“It’s a complicated issue that is not going to go away.”

Freida added that bringing refugees and asylum seekers into communities, particularly rural areas, can have a wide range of benefits

for those communities and for society as a whole.

“Our whole society is built on the value of ‘doing unto others as we would have done unto ourselves,” she said.

Describing herself as a “perpetual student”, Freida said she is always eager to learn more about the situation in order to help refugees and people seeking asylum.

The network has helped organise a number of relevant events during its history, including an event which featured federal politician Tim Watts (MHR, Gellibrand) as guest speaker, which was held in Wangaratta last November.

He spoke of the need to support people in refugee camps in our region, and the importance of working to improve resettlement in Australia, and referred to the Canadian model of sponsorship as one that could be applied here.

Freida said representatives from groups within the network will travel to Canberra in March to meet with federal politicians.

by Rural Australians for Refugees, Benalla and will be held at 3pm on Tuesday, March 6.

MURRAY cod fishing reports have been a little mixed up over the last couple of weeks. By all accounts the cod fishing is a little bit hot and cold at the moment.

These reports support my own fishing adventures as I too have found the cod fishing to be quite hot and cold. I have had a number of fishless evenings over the last fortnight in

fin fishing at Lake Buffalo. Word is numerous small fish are being caught off the bank in the main boat ramp area of the lake.

Lake Buffalo is teaming with small redfin at the moment. Small soft plastics, bladed spinners and shallow diving minnows will all work up there at the moment.

Personally, I have been having stacks of fun catching yabbies this last week. I have found a great little dam full of large yabbies and have been having blast catching them.

Once the weather cools down the yabbies will be harder to catch, so if you like a feed of yabbies now is a great time of the year to head out, find a dam, seek permission off the land owner and catch a feed of the best eating crustaceans on the planet.

Fish run hot and cold the Wangaratta area, while in among them I have had a couple of sessions where I have managed to catch four or five cod.

Personally, I think this might be the beginning of the typical hot and cold Murray cod fishing that we experience in the Wangaratta region each autumn.

Downstream, I have heard some fantastic and consistent reports from the Bundalong area. I have had reports of big cod over 100cm being caught down there as well as reports of heaps of little cod being caught by bait fisherman.

My great mate Brett Corker spent an afternoon down at Bundalong last week where he managed to catch six undersized Murray cod.

Childhood exposure to antibiotics ANTIBIOTICS can be lifesaving and when prescribed appropriately, are definitely an important part of medicine.

However, we know that antibiotics are over prescribed in Australia, perhaps given for a viral infection, when a disease would have been self-limiting anyway, or when other treatment options could have been tried first.

Over 25 per cent of Australian infants have been prescribed antibiotics in their first year of life.

Pfeiffer Wines 2016 Riesling THE searing heat has taken its toll on the tomatoes which were right at the top of the plants and closest to the sun.

While those with protection from greenery and shade cloth have fared much better, the outsiders have a nasty case of sunburn which makes it look a little like the gorgeous red spheres have bald patches.

So the insiders are the ones we are slicing, topping with fresh basil and drizzling with olive oil, while the ugly ones are still basiled, but oiled and peppered and thrust in the oven to roast until they blister even more.

The smell in the kitchen is kind of sticky, sweet and summery and when they’re roughly chopped they make a lazy sauce for pasta or gnocchi.

Crumble some goats cheese

with ANITA McPHERSON on top and it’s a treat – especially with a glass of Pfeiffer Wines Riesling.

This wine has a vibrant and fruity bouquet packed with summery charm and punchy citrus fruit.

That citrus appeal continues in the zingy flavour, lush with lime, long lasting and eventually coming to a crisp, mineral end.

These delicious little scones go well with all sorts of cheese or even a smear of cream cheese and some smoked salmon, especially if you are planning a gourmet Valentine’s Day date.

Sift flour and salt into a bowl.

Rub in butter until mixture resembles breadcrumbs.

Stir in the dates and fennel seeds until combined.

Using a palette or butter knife, stir in the buttermilk until dough just comes together.

Knead gently on a lightly floured surface.

Press or gently roll the dough out to a 2.5cm thickness and cut into rounds using a 4cm round pastry cutter.

Place rounds about 2cm apart on a paper-lined baking tray.

Brush tops with egg mixture and bake for 12-15 minutes or until golden brown and cooked through.

Serve split scones topped with ¼ slice of the prosciutto and a small wedge of blue cheese.

From dismay to tears of laughter Channel Chat SHOW: Mad as Hell CHANNEL: ABC TIME: Wednesday, 8.30pm with FREYJA POSTLETHWAITE THE horrors and wonders of the world have long been ripe for the picking, or rather, the picking on.

Enter Shaun Micallef’s Mad as Hell – the satirical current affairs program that has captivated the hearts, minds and funny bones of Australians since it first graced television screens in 2012.

Comic icon Shaun Micallef is accompanied by equally hilarious co-stars Francis Greenslade, Roz Hammond, Emily Taheny, Tosh Greenslade and Stephen Hall to deliver punch line after

A drama teacher sparked my love affair with the hilarious program asked our class to watch an episode for homework to get some inspiration for a project.

Needless to say, I’ve never enjoyed an assignment so much.
