FROM the streets of our bustling regional centres to cafes in quiet small towns, it is fairly safe to say that much of the North East runs on coffee.

Among those in the area who help create the blends in the region’s morning beverages are the team behind Mt Beauty’s Cogent Solutions Group.

The business is the driving force behind brands Honeybird Coffee, Mountain Range Coffee and Hero Coffee, just to mention a few, and is built on a partnership between two coffee loving, tree-changing families.

Ivan Zirnstein and his family moved to the area in 2008 to pursue a better work/ life balance, while Ryan Lynch and his family headed to Mt Beauty in 2012 in search of a balanced life and to be closer to relatives.

Ivan said coffee has always been part of his life.

“I enjoy having coffee at breakfast with my family in the morning,” he said.

“There has always been coffee in my family memories.”

Ryan added that “coffee has always interested me as a food science – so many variables can be changed to impact the final outcome”. Ŷ Continued page 3

Festive shopping with kids PARENTING expert Professor Matt Sanders from The University of Queensland is calling on parents to spend less money on — and more time with — their kids this Christmas.

As a child development expert and founder of the Triple P – Positive Parenting Program, he said “whatever the age of your child or teen, gifts that prompt more interaction between parents and kids help strengthen relationships and make family life more fun, which is really important to a child’s ongoing social, emotional and physical development”.

Research shows children raised in a positive parenting environment are more likely to reach a higher level of education, have better jobs, enjoy better health and experience more positive relationships.

If you’re looking to Christmas shop with your children, take note of the below tips for a less stressful experience.

Top 5 Christmas Shopping Tips Christmas shopping with children can be a wonderful opportunity to share the Christmas spirit and teach some valuable shopping skills, but it can also be a very stressful time for parents.

Here are some handy tips to make Christmas shopping with the kids memorable and enjoyable.

1. Timing is everything The shops are busier in the lead up to Christmas, so choose the least hectic time of day that suits your child’s routine. Try early morning. It avoids overlapping nap times and children will be fed and less demanding.

2. A short trip is a good trip Just because it’s Christmas don’t assume children will be able to cope with a long shopping trip.

Several brief trips are better than one marathon encounter. Explain

what the shopping trip is for, where you’re going and what you’re planning to buy. This will avoid nagging on the trip.

3. Plan ahead If children are searching for gifts themselves, think ahead to the type of shop that will have items within your child’s budget. Make sure your child understands they have to find something within that budget. Before you leave home, have a discussion about the kind of present someone might like rather than simply buying something your child likes. Don’t dictate purchases.

Good shopping is a skill that needs to be learned. And be prepared to congratulate your child for wise purchases and say why – value for money, or choosing things that a person would like.

4. Explain the rules — and consequences — in advance Explain the ground rules for Christmas shopping before you leave home and be prepared to back this up with a consequence.

Three simple rules should see you through any trip - stay close, use a pleasant voice and do as you’re told.

When children stick to ground rules make sure you give them occasional praise and encouragement. If they break the rules, remind them what rule they’ve broken and restate that rule.

If they continue to break the rule use your usual discipline back up, such as quiet time.

5. Take a break Schedule break periods for a snack or drink, but avoid giving a snack or drink to shut a child up as this will encourage misbehaviour in the future. You may also like to plan break time around some of the free Christmas entertainment many shopping centres offer.

It can be trained to grow on a trellis, up tree trunks, over an arbor, against a wall or fence, as a border plant

Diabetes in dogs and cats DIABETES Mellitus or sugar diabetes is a fairly uncommon disease in dogs and cats, however, when it occurs the animal must be treated to save its life.

The symptoms of diabetes are excessive drinking, urination and weight loss, if the condition is left untreated it can progress to depression, lack of appetite and vomiting.

The cause of diabetes is usually lack of insulin production.

The organ that produces insulin is the pancreas, sometimes the pancreas stops producing insulin after the animal has had pancreatitis or it may happen for no apparent reason.

Diagnosis of diabetes can be done by measuring the animal’s blood glucose level and testing the urine for evidence of glucose being passed in the urine.

In most animals with diabetes the blood glucose is very high by

Diabetes is controlled by administering insulin to the patient twice daily, by giving a small injection under the skin and feeding a carefully controlled diet.

There are many conditions that can cause similar symptoms to diabetes so the ďŹ rst step is to take your animal to the vet and if required the relevant tests can be performed.

It was not long after that Cogent Solutions Group and Honeybird Coffee was established, with Ivan coming on board into the partnership three years ago.

In the beginning, the business was quite small, operating with an 8kg roaster, and now a 120kg roaster has given them the ability to supply to businesses all over the country.

The pair’s complimentary backgrounds have also helped them combine their talents well.

Ivan said. “We are now in a position to employ locals and support a number of local businesses by spending in our local area - cafes for catering, sourcing parts and equipment for repairs and improvements through a number of local businesses. “We sponsor various community groups including the local football and cricket clubs and love seeing these local legends put in an enormous effort to give people a healthy outlet in the area.

“Both our families regularly spend time in the natural surroundings including the mountains - walking, mountain biking and even running through the trails. “It’s a great safe space to bring up a young family and we are establishing some ďŹ rm roots as our children grow through their schooling and embed ourselves in the community through building lasting relationships.â€?

The coffee that the company roasts comes from all over the globe, including Colombia, Brazil, Ethiopia, Papua New Guinea, India and Sumatra, and Ivan said attention to detail was the secret to roasting and creating good coffee, from “sourcing the right coffee through sampling and then blending it just right and roasting it perfectly�.

Ivan said he has been gratiďŹ ed to see the ever burgeoning coffee culture in the North East. “It’s great to see people embracing good quality coffee and that has really helped us grow. “We appreciate the regular support of customers, and in turn we do what we can when we can to make sure they are supported and receive what they need, when they need it,â€? he added.

Fishing gets tough as water gets murky

LAST week’s rainfall has seen a large flush of water push through all of the river systems across North East Victoria.

The worst of the flush has well and truly passed most areas now and is working its way down the Murray River. In saying that, the local rivers are all still significantly higher than usual and some are still quite dirty.

I went trout fishing in a small tributary of the King River where I found the fishing to be fantastic.

I managed four or five nice size brown trout up to around 40cm long using a fluorescent coloured Strike Tiger Nymph in ‘bubble gum’ colour in the murky water.

Summer trout fishing in small streams is usually best straight after decent rainfall and increased stream flows when there is some fresh water to stir them up.

Weatherwise things are forecast to remain stable, and very hot which could see things really dry out, river flows reduce to decent levels and hopefully there could be some improved Murray cod fishing around North East Victoria by next weekend.

Around Wangaratta the King River is still high, but water clarity is quite good whereas the Ovens River is still really murky.

Last week I managed to catch a couple of Murray cod in the King River near Oxley using bait. I caught a 40cm cod on cheese and a smaller cod on worms.

On Friday evening Brett Corker and I went lure fishing in the King River due to the water being clearer. Brett caught one small cod and I missed out. Although we caught one, the fishing was tough. The fish just were not interested.

My dad and my uncle went to Lake Nillahcootie on Saturday where my uncle managed one nice yellowbelly about 4lb using a small yabby as bait. Uncle Gary said the water was quite dirty after the influx

Add ½ tsp of apple cider into a small glass of water and

Baddaginnie Run 2015 Verdelho WHILE we may be sourcing an increasing amount of information these days online or through some kind of electronic device, for me there is nothing that can replace the tactile quality print can provide.

Spreading out the weekend papers, favourite books which have a weight and a smell that add an extra dimension to their appeal, and the multi-sensory pleasure turning the pages of a glossy magazine can bring.

I’ll even look at trade or special interest magazines relating to things I have no interest in at all, just to enjoy the feel of the cover, the beautiful photographs and that crisp, freshly printed smell.

Those I’m actually interested in reading are saved for the weekend, sometimes still preserved in their subscription wrappers, so I can totally indulge – unwrapping

THIS DAY IN HISTORY 1883 MYRTLEFORD celebrated the opening of its railway link on December 13, 1883 with enormous gusto.

How we might create a real life lightsabre (part one) I THINK it would be fair to say that nearly everyone who has ever watched a Star Wars film has wished that lightsabres were real.

These ‘elegant weapons for a more civilised age’ are the stuff of every sci-fi geeks fantasy, and have inspired countless toys and props throughout the years.

With the upcoming release of Star Wars: The Last Jedi, I thought it would be the perfect time to investigate just what it might take to create the coolest weapons in a galaxy far, far, away.

Lightsabres can roughly be broken down into three main components - the hilt or handle, the power source, and the blade itself.

In the Star Wars films, the lightsaber blade is depicted as a beam of light roughly three feet long

and a couple of inches thick.

The manner in which the blade of light stops abruptly after three feet presents the first hurdle to overcome when designing a lightsabre.

While creating a laser beam with the ability to cut through objects is a reasonably straightforward feat, the beam will travel indefinitely there’s no way to make it stop after traveling three feet from the hilt.

This means that if one were to create a laser beam as powerful as they are depicted in the films (many scenes show lightsabres cutting through steel and other metals like butter), you’d have a very unwieldy and dangerous weapon in your hands.

You’d undoubtedly defeat your opponent, but you’d probably destroy the building you

were duelling in as well.

In laboratory conditions, scientists have been able to slow down and even stop light for up to a second (a marvellous achievement in itself), but nonetheless, using a laser as the beam of a lightsabre seems like a pretty bad prospect at this stage.

There is, however, another more likely candidate that could comprise the blade of a lightsabre - plasma.

While most people are aware that matter can exist in three states depending upon temperature - solid, liquid and gas - the fourth state of matter, known as plasma, is less well known.

Converting a gas such as oxygen into plasma is achieved by superheating it which ionizes its atoms (freeing the electrons from the

atoms), allowing it to conduct electricity.

Plasma cutters, which consist of a plasma jet roughly one inch long, are already widely used and effective tools for the purpose of cutting metals - which sounds very much like a lightsaber, doesn’t it?

So why hasn’t someone invented a plasma cutter with a three foot long blade?

Well, for one thing, a raw uncontrolled plasma jet on such a scale would likely burst out of a lightsaber hilt in a wide, wild flame that would probably incinerate anyone who got near it.

And secondly, it would require the energy output of an entire town to power it.

The first problem could potentially be solved through magnetism.

Plasma is generated through the freeing of an atom’s electrons, and electrons bend in a magnetic field.

Using a rod shaped magnet, it could be possibly to bend and mold the plasma into the desired, concentrated beam depicted in the Star Wars films.

The second issue - creating a battery with enough power to sustain a plasma blade on such a scale - presents a larger problem, but one that could potentially be solved using nanotechnology.

The latest series kicked off in Corryong, a town which is much more than its “Man

From Snowy River” festival, and also took a tour of Dunalley in Tasmania which is rebuilding itself after the devastating bushfires of 2013.

Host Heather Ewart and the team have tracked down some incredibly interesting places and people, whether they think they are or not, avoiding the talk-it-up mayors and know-all town criers.

Another charming aspect to the show, and perhaps the reason it’s proved to be a ratings winner, is Heather’s warmth and her natural ability to make a genuine and heartfelt connection to the ordinary people she meets.

They seem relaxed in her company and are given the time and space to express themselves, which in turn allows the viewer to connect and relate to these marvellous places.

Enjoy the Oodnadatta Track this week but if you missed earlier episodes it’s well worth “doing a u-ey” and going back to where it all began on ABC iview.
