FOR Bobby Bajram, the youngest person to ever be diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) in Australia, reaching his dream of training on, and scaling, Mt Everest literally takes a village. In this case, the village is the tight knit alpine community of Falls Creek and his growing numbers of sponsors and supporters. Dividing his time between Melbourne and Falls Creek, Bobby is passionate about being able to tackle the world’s highest mountain to raise awareness and funds for people with disabilities, and their carers. His next step is to this October tackle Mera Peak – Nepal’s highest trekking peak - and he hopes to tackle Everest itself at a later date. He ultimately hopes to raise $100 million to put together a trust fund for people with disabilities and support groups to give them much needed assistance and care. Bobby lives with remitting relapsing MS, which means his symptoms can vary in severity and when they are at their most severe, he is confined to bed or in hospital for extended periods. But he does not let his condition stop him, or define him. “You’ve just to get on with it and do your best,” he said. “With me, I’ve got to be handled with kid gloves, but I’m also a tough bloke. “Everyone’s got their own Everest.” Bobby’s efforts have seen him featured in diverse news outlets, including online outlet The Huffington Post and more, but through it all he remains connected to the people who are helping him on his journey. “I really appreciate the support that everyone up here gives me,” he said. continued page |
