A PASSION to keep and preserve the wonders of nature for future generations is what drives members of the Beechworth Treescape Group. “We love trees,” said group member Harvey Anderssen. “They symbolise the natural environment of which we are part. “They mark the passing of time with the season changes. “Our old trees remind us of our historic past, and of community members no longer with us. “They contribute to our wellbeing in so many ways, how could we not care for them?” Dave McIntyre of Stanley is an equally passionate member. “Trees are examples of the diversity of life across this planet,” he said, moving around the arboretum he has built at his home, surrounded by rare and interesting trees. Mr McIntyre said the group was born sometime ago, when he and other like-minded community members were drawn together in opposition to Indigo Shire Council’s planned removal of some Lombardy poplar trees in order to widen a section of Camp Street. Mr Anderssen said the historic trees were being taken, but “they were safe if the community appreciated their value”. The poplars were saved and local residents were given more of a say in decisions involving local trees. continued page |
