Champ on the road to recovery

DURING the first race of the Victorian Downhill Series (VDHS) just over two months ago, Beechworth mountain bike racer Lia Ladbrook crashed out on her last practise run, fracturing most of the bones of her left foot.

“I have been lucky not to have any serious injuries in the past, only a couple of scratches and bruises, until that crash,” Lia said.

“I landed on a rock and had to have surgery and pins put in.

“I am still unable to bear weight on my foot even though I got the pins out a few weeks ago, but I have started physio to practise walking again which is exciting.”

Lia’s father got her into mountain biking when she was eight years old, with the pair going out every weekend.

“I participated in the Junior Ride Program run by the Beechworth Chain Gang but it wasn’t until I was 15 that I started to become interested in racing and I have competed every year since.”

Lia races Gravity Enduro and Downhill and hasn’t just competed at the mountain biking events, she has walked away with some excellent results at state and national level.

“Gravity Enduro is a full day of riding and you are expected to ride up the hills and down, but are only timed on the descents,” she explained.

“In downhill, you practise only one track and only get one race run, but the atmosphere at the races is amazing and everyone is open to help you out if you need.”

Rabbit Calicivirus THE government is releasing a new strain of the rabbit Calicivirus or Rabbit Haemorrhagic Disease Virus (RHDV) to try and control the wild rabbit population.

A new strain of the virus, RHDV2, has also been detected in Victoria.

This has caused confusion and concern about how pet rabbits might be affected.

Calicivirus is a highly contagious and deadly virus which damages a rabbit’s internal organs by causing wide spread coagulation problems.

It is generally spread to pet rabbits through contact with wild rabbits however, it can also be spread through insects and on objects such as clothing or water sippers.

It can be fast acting, and some rabbits may not show any symptoms at all.

This is why proactive, preventative action is best and rabbit owners are encouraged to vaccinate their rabbits from a young age.

with Ovens & Kiewa Veterinary Hospital If symptoms are shown they may consist of loss of appetite, lethargy, depression, and possibly bleeding from the nose, mouth or rectum.

If your rabbit shows any of these signs make sure you immediately isolate them from other animals and contact your vet.

Unfortunately, there is no cure for Calicivirus, which is why preventative healthcare is so important.

There is a vaccine available called CYLAP. Generally, a young rabbit requires one injection at 10-12 weeks of age and boosters to stay protected.

During an outbreak, additional boosters may be recommended.

Contact your vet today about specifically safeguarding your rabbit.

Gondwana cousins - a family connection YOU order Australian flowers to be delivered to your mum for her birthday, and a beautiful arrangement featuring South African Proteas is delivered.

In wedding bouquets and at Australian public events where wreaths are laid or bouquets are presented, the flowers which were ordered and anticipated to be iconic Aussies turn out to be South African. Why? This confusion between cousins is generations old. What’s in a name? The confusion is in taxonomy. The family is Proteaceae, the genera are Protea and Banksia. (In botany, a genus is a principal taxonomic category that ranks above species and below family.)

The Proteaceae family of plants is huge. Some 75-80 million years ago, before Australia split off from Africa, the Indian sub-continent and South America, Proteaceae ancestors grew together in the ancient supercontinent known as Gondwana.

After separation over millions of

years, the family evolved and divided into two subfamilies: the Proteoideae, mostly growing in southern Africa, and the Grevilleoideae, concentrated in Australia, South America and parts of eastern Asia.

There are no Proteas native to Australia, and there are no Banksias native to South Africa. Both are strikingly beautiful, but they are not the same.

Proteas are cultivated extensively for the horticultural industry.

The specimen (pictured) is from a cutting-grow plant. Selected species, such as ‘Pink Ice’ must be cutting-grown to remain true to form. Flowers will last for weeks after harvesting. The leaves are not prickly. Florists use these flowers extensively.

Banksias share many of the same attributes as Proteas. Both have specialised proteoid roots. They have evolved to efficiently survive in soils low in nutrients. Both are particularly sensitive to high levels

of phosphorus.

Australia has over 850 species of Proteaceae. These include banksias, grevilleas, hakeas, dryandras, macadamias, waratahs, and many more. South Africa has about 300 species, including proteas, leucadendrons and leucospermums.

Banksia species have also been wild-harvested and cultivated for many years for the cut flower trade.

Blooms are available all year round, in colours of red, orange, cream and green.

In our garden a B. menziesii (pictured) is one such selection. The conspicuous pink and orange flowers are spectacular. This bush is now 14 years old.

It is relatively simple to grow banksias from seed. Our seeds germinated in about six weeks with the addition of smoke water. This specimen was planted out into welldrained soil in full sun. It receives a light dressing of low-phosphorus fertilizer once every few years.

In 2019, Lia came 1st in the Open Female at McKayos (Gravity Enduro) and 1st in the under 17 overall State Gravity Enduro Series and she was second overall at state level in 2020.

She took that form to the next level in 2021, claiming 2nd in the Elite Women Overall State Gravity Enduro Series and 3rd in the Elite Women Enduro World Series (EWS) qualifier Falls Creek, 2nd fastest junior qualifier, qualifying to race at the Under 21 Enduro World Series (EWS) 2022, 2nd place at the Elite Women: Bright State Round Gravity Enduro and 2nd place at the Elite Women: Mt Beauty State Round Gravity Enduro.

She also had outstanding results at nationals coming 2nd in the Under 19 National Downhill Championships and 3rd fastest female at the National Championships, and qualified for Junior and Senior Downhill Teams.

Perhaps her highest achievement was becoming the national champion (Under 19s) at the 2021 Gravity Enduro Championships held at Greenvalleys Mountain Bike Park in Tongarra, NSW and becoming the Under 19 Gravity Enduro National Champion in 2022.

With the pins in her foot now removed, Lia is sporting a stylish moonboot and the 17 year old is looking forward to getting back on her bike.

“My broken foot has prevented me from competing in Downhill National Championships in Maydena in Tasmania, and I also missed out on the remaining Victorian Downhill Series rounds at Mt Baw Baw, Mt Beauty and Mansfield, and the first Gravity Enduro round in Falls Creek but I want to focus on Year 12 this year.”

Next year looks to be a different story though with Lia hoping to compete in all the races she can in Australia and overseas.

“I will compete in the Downhill National Championship next year and hopefully make it into the World Cup team.

“It would be amazing to be selected to race in World Cups in 2023 because it has been a dream of mine since I started racing.

“My favourite place to compete is definitely in Maydena in Tasmania because the trails are so good.

“Naturally, I can’t get down there to ride very often, but going there once a year for Downhill

Lia looks up to women like Tahnee Seagrave (World Cup racer) and Veronique Sandler (Freestyle mountain biker) who are constantly pushing the sport further.

“It’s awesome to see how many girls have started to get interested in the sport of mountain biking, even since I started, and it would be great to see it grow even further.

“The local support I have received has been awesome, especially from Shingleback Offroad, the Fastline Bike Academy and Beechworth Cyclery.

“I am part of the Fastline Bike Academy (TFB) which provides skills coaching and fitness training.

“There are based in Albury-Wodonga, but the training sessions move around the main mountain-bike parks in North East Victoria.”

Weather cooling off but the fishing is still hot THE weather is certainly cooling down, but the fishing isn’t.

Last week my Dad and a few mates spent the week at Lake Mulwala, fishing for Murray cod.

Between the four of them they caught around 60 Murray cod for the week, ranging from very small up to 75cm.

The cod were caught using a variety of different lures, with spinnerbaits accounting for most fish one day, and hard body lures the next.

Some fish were also caught on lipless crankbaits and surface lures.

There is a lot of aquatic weed in Lake Mulwala at the moment.

The lake is going to be drawn down five metres in May, and will remain at that level until it is refilled in August.

This allows the aquatic weed to be out of the water and exposed to air for over a month, and also exposes the weed to frost which can kill off the aquatic weed.

Most boat ramps will be out of the water and accessing the lake will be difficult during this time.

This is a process that is undertaken every four to five years to

It’s just such a shame for the local business operators that nobody had the foresight to do it last year during lockdown when the impact for business owners would’ve been less severe.

In other news I have fished the Ovens River twice last week with bait, catching small Murray cod, trout cod and yellowbelly on each trip.

There are a lot of small native fish in the river at the moment which is an excellent sign for the future of the fishery.

If you want to avoid the small fish and target only the bigger fish you will need to use a larger bait or lure.

I have been catching my smaller fish on a small hook and a bait of live worms.

◆ TELL-TALE SCAM SIGNS: At a glance, this text might look legitimate, but look closer. The details are too generic, the message itself doesn’t make sense (why would your parcel be delivered if shipping wasn’t paid?), and the web address does not look legitimate - our postal service is ‘Australia Post’, and has a ‘.com.au’ web address.

Smishing - a prevalent scourge COVID seemed to draw out digital scam artists in earnest.

With so much social and work related activity occuring online, the situation was ripe for nefarious sorts to ply their trade, with an overall 84% increase in losses to scams in 2021, and Australians losing a record $323 million.

Without question, the softest targets are in the over 55 age bracket, who, through no fault of their own, are genrally not as tech savvy as younger generations.

And one particular type of scam has seen a significant increase - “smishing”.

“Smishing” is a mash-up of “SMS phishing” or phishing that occurs through text messaging.

At a high level, avoiding smishing scams is simple.

Not clicking on links in unfamiliar or unexpected text messages is an easy first step.

However, cyber criminals who use smishing scams are full of tricks that are intended to get one of two types of responses: either a click on a link or a response (either by phone or text) to the number sending the message.

While you may feel empowered by avoiding any suspicious links, you’ll need to fight the desire to call or text back telling the scammers to stop.

1. Don’t reply to the text message or call the number Even if the text message says “text ‘stop’ to stop receiving

messages,” never reply.

If you are sure the message is coming from scam number, replying may actually result in more messages getting spammed to your phone.

The same may be true of calling the number.

Often, scammers don’t know if the numbers they’re using are actually active.

Providing a response to the message will verify to them that the number is indeed active, leading them to continue and potentially increase the number of scam messages you’re receiving.

A more effective option is to just block the number outright.

Unfortunately, some model phones do not include phone blocking in the phone’s software.

You may need to install a number blocking app from your phone’s app store.

2. Do a web search of both the number and the message content If you’re feeling a bit uneasy about a potential smishing scam, type the number or the message (or both) into a Google search.

Chances are, you are not the first person to receive that message.

In many cases, you’ll find others posting on various scam number websites.

Don’t just trust one negative response or inquiry, however.

Look to see if a suspicious number or message has numerous others posting

that it’s potentially a scam.

3. If the phishing message is spoofing a company, call the company directly Many smishing messages will pretend to be a well-known company, such as a store or bank.

If you believe the message is a scam, instead of calling or texting the scam number, look up that company’s customer service number from its official website.

Contact the service through that number and inquire about the message you received. If they confirm that it’s not from them, delete it.

4. Don’t click on any links in the message All forms of smishing are usually a game of emotional manipulation.

Often, scammers don’t need you to overtly give up passwords, pins and social security numbers. At times, all they need to do is pique your interest enough to get you to click on a link and download a virus to your phone.

There’s a good chance that if you did click on a phishing link, your mobile device is already infected. Since the goal for such viruses is often to stay hidden, you may not realize your phone is actually infected. However, some telltale signs may be: Unsuspected memory usage Phone heating up excessively Pop-up messages while using your smartphone web browser.
