FOR the mother and daughter team of Bronwen Jarred and Hayley Smith, fundraising to help those less fortunate is all in the family. For the past few years, the two women have thrown themselves into fundraising for the Live Below the Line campaign, subsisting on only the most basic food for a week to raise money as well as awareness about the cycle of poverty. They are just two of the many people across the North East and beyond who take part in the week, where participants must live on $2 a day. Bronwen said they were both inspired to take up the challenge by one of her other daughters, Rebecca Smith, who works in early childhood education and encouraged the family to take part in Live Below the Line. “She’s a big believer in early childhood education, Bronwen said. Over the years, members of the family have raised hundreds of dollars each for Live Below the Line. The family typically pool their money while doing Live Below the Line in order to make bulk buying of food easier and their food last longer, but Bronwen said the week still holds plenty of challenges. “It’s all the little things that you do without, she said, with Hayley agreeing that small pleasures like chocolate and coffee are the things they miss the most while doing the challenge. But both women agree that despite the hardships, there are plenty of benefits to tackling the week as a team. “You have the support, plus the pooling of the money, Bronwen said. She said often people participating in the challenge give each other hints to make their meals more interesting, with one fellow fundraiser giving her the idea to cook two minute noodles, then fry the noodles with eggs and vegetables to add flavour.
