Healthy passion to study abroad

WANGARATTA-based Dr Cath Cosgrave is determined to investigate ways that those in the rural health sector can retain staff in the long term.

And she’ll be jetting off to Canada this May to help her cause, thanks to a Churchill Fellowship awarded by the Winston Churchill Memorial Trust.

An academic at the Department of Rural Health at Melbourne University in Wangaratta, Dr Cosgrave has long investigated this particular field.

“Australians in rural and remote areas have poorer health outcomes than people in metropolitan areas, and severe workforce shortages are a major contributor – particularly when it comes to nurses and allied health workers,” she said.

“Retaining experienced and skilled health professionals to work and live in rural areas is a global issue, and it’s a really under-researched issue.”

The Goorambat resident said she had been aware of the Churchill Fellowship award for some time, and decided to put her application in after attending an information session in Albury-Wodonga last year and being inspired by past fellows from the North East, including Cathy McGowan (MHR, Indi).

Dr Cosgrave said she is looking forward to going to Canada and finding out more about their staff retention strategies from a country with a similar health system and comparable geographical challenges.

ATO benchmarks help small businesses ‘swim between the flags’ THE Australian Taxation Office (ATO) has released updated benchmark data to help small businesses across the country compare their performance with their competitors and ‘swim between the flags’.

Assistant Commissioner Peter Holt said that businesses should use the benchmarks to gauge the strength of their business and keep an eye on their competition.

“We want small businesses to stay afloat, so our benchmarks are a great way to ensure your business is viable, competitive and not at risk of venturing into rough water,” he said.

The benchmarks also help the ATO identify small businesses that may be doing the wrong thing and not properly reporting some or all of their income.

“Think of the benchmarks like the red and yellow flags on the beach,” Mr Holt said.

If you stay between the flags, you’ll be less likely to attract our attention.”

Updated benchmark data for more than 100 industries is now available for the following categories: · Accommodation and food; · Building and construction trade services; · Education, training, recreation and support services; · Health care and personal services; · Manufacturing; · Automotive electrical services; · Machinery and equipment repair and maintenance;

· Architectural services; · Veterinary services; · Retail trade; and · Transport, postal and warehousing.

The quickest and easiest way to work out how you compare is by using the business performance check tool in the ATO app, which does the calculations for you.

The ATO app is available to download for free from the Google Play or Apple app stores.

“If your costs are within the benchmark range, you should be satisfied that you’re keeping up with your competition,” Mr Holt said.

“If you use a registered tax professional, it’s also a good idea to have a chat with them about where your business sits in comparison with our benchmarks.

“They might have some advice about steps you can take to improve your performance.

“We also encourage tax professionals to use the benchmarks to initiate conversations with their small business clients.”

The ATO also has a hotline to allow small business operators to report competitors that may be doing the wrong thing.

Reports can be made anonymously.

Growing pears in autumn months MOVE over summer fruits, it’s time for pears to take the limelight!

Pears would have to be one of the most well known and loved autumn fruit.

They are a member of the pome family which also includes apples and quinces.

Pears have been in existence for hundreds of years and have been used for eating and cooking In many parts of the world.

Pears are hardy trees to grow, but remembering a few things will ensure you enjoy a bountiful crop.

They enjoy a sunny location in well drained soil.

Deep watering through the first few summers will encourage the tree to develop a good strong root system.

Prune to shape in winter and feed with a complete fruit fertiliser in spring.

Some of the more well known vari-

eties are William’s bon Chrétien (also known as Bartlett), Packham’s Triumph, Beurre Bosc and Red Sensation.

Nashi pear is also a popular choice now.

These varieties are readily available from nurseries and the supermarket.

Pear trees require a second variety for pollination.

You can also purchase them as a double graft with two varieties that pollinate each other on the one tree.

Pears begin reaching their peak from late summer into winter, depending on variety.

With the exception of Nashi, pears need to be picked when they are mature but not yet ripe.

These fruit is unique in that ripen from the inside out so are best picked when they are colouring but still hard.

Pears will continue to ripen off the tree and will benefit from chilling time

to prolong their ‘shelf life’.

They will only fully ripen when they are bought up to room temperature.

Pears are so versatile.

They work just as well with savoury dishes as they do with desserts.

One of my favourite ways to use excess pears is to make a spiced pear and ginger paste which is delicious with soft cheeses and keeps for a long time in the fridge.

Thinly sliced in a salad is also good.

Be aware that pears are vulnerable to fruit fly attack.

Netting early is one of the best ways to ensure you don’t have fruit that has been stung.

If your fruit is affected, make sure you dispose of it correctly.

Enjoy your pear harvest if you are lucky enough to have a tree in your yard.

Season for snake bites EVERYONE, including the slippery snakes and our beloved pets, love the warmth and sunshine of summer and early autumn.

Unfortunately, some dogs’ and cats’ sunbaking sessions can be interrupted by snakes and often they get bitten.

Common snakes we see in the North East are the brown, tiger, black and common copper head.

Whilst they vary in how poisonous they are, they are all potentially fatal.

Snakes are often very difficult to differentiate as each variety can come in various colours.

With an especially scorching heat this summer, the snakes have been more active than ever.

If you find your pet with a snake do not try to catch it, your vet stocks multi-species antivenom.

Every pet reacts differently when snake bitten!

Common signs include vomiting, increased salivation and collapse.

But there a number of other clinical signs that can present, such as trembling, diarrhoea, increased breathing rate, paralysis, and eventually death.

Signs can begin as early as 20 minutes after the bite but can

If you think your animal has been bitten by a snake you need to contact your vet clinic immediately and have your pet examined as soon as possible.

Diagnosis at the clinic is made based on history, clinical signs, and running a blood clotting test.

Blood clotting tests are quick, inexpensive and helpful to confirm suspicion of snake bite.

The snake’s venom acts to prevent the blood from clotting like normal.

Bitten pets will clot slower than normal or sometimes not at all.

If it has been over 2 hours, then vets can perform a blood and urine test to check for muscle damage, which adds to confirming diagnosis.

Successful treatment requires hospitalisation, intravenous fluids, anti-venom intravenously, and can vary from an overnight stay in the lucky ones.

Often it can be weeks in hospital but generally most animals will be in hospital for 3-4 days.

Dr Cosgrave said she will be visiting several parts of Canada while there, including the province of Nunavut in the Arctic Circle, whose population includes a significant number of indigenous Inuit people.

She also hopes to build a research partnership with some of her counterparts in British Columbia.

She said that retaining health staff in regional areas is a continuing issue that needs teamwork to address.

“Generally, the issues are the need for health service employers (all rural employers really!) to take a more whole-of-person approach to staff, recruitment and retention,” she said.

“This includes ensuring 1) the workplace is positive, supportive, and inclusive of all staff, particularly new staff; 2) career building opportunities are available, including access to continuing professional develop-

and bring together major employers and community groups to work on addressing information needs for newcomers, identifying community champions to support newcomers, and to identify life-stage appropriate activities/events in the town.”

RIGHT across the region things are changing in the fishing world at the moment.

Despite the above average temperatures, the usual hot and cold autumn Murray cod fishing pattern that we see each year is here to stay.

The Murray cod fishing has been about as consistent as an Australian Prime Minister over the last few weeks in pretty much all rivers with the only exception being the Murray River and Lake Mulwala which have been fishing consistently well.

On Friday evening after work I fished the King River for more than two hours casting several different types of surface lures and did

not get a single touch - absolutely nothing.

At the exact same time, Brett Corker was fishing in the Ovens River in Wangaratta, about 5km away from where I was fishing, and he managed to land two cod and lose another, all on a Codger jointed surface lure.

The biggest was a lovely Murray cod around 50cm.

The trout fishing on the other hand has started to pick up in the streams.

I had some great success in a tributary of the Ovens River one afternoon last week and I have had a report of a couple of nice trout being caught in the Kiewa River not far downstream of Mt Beauty.

I am unsure what those trout were caught on, but mine were all caught on a small WildBait minnow in redfin pattern.

Redfin are weird.

I fished Lake Buffalo one afternoon last week and it was very, very slow - I only caught two.

The day before I fished Fletchers Dam near Stanley with my daughter Holly, where we found amazing redfin fishing.

The fish we caught were all very small, but they were plentiful and provided us with stacks of enjoyment.

Tips when going on a road trip SUMMER is behind us, and so are the long road trips to visit family and friends for Christmas and holidays.

We made a long trip to Gippsland, Melbourne and Adelaide with two little kids.

It went surprisingly simply.

I put that down to luck and perhaps my (first time) excellent preparation of car tunes and planned park breaks, repertoire of games and car dress ups (for the toys) and of course snacks.

As we head into a season of long weekends, Easter and the upcoming school holidays, I thought it appropriate to share some healthy car snacks that worked for us.

Yes, it takes a little bit of prep and foresight, but means if one is asleep you can push on for another hour to

the next quality town or park and avoid those “Im starrrrrrving” instant food pit stops. · ‘Mayers’ nut spreads with Vitawheats as a spoon or other appropriate biscuit/vegie stick. · Precut fruit box · Corn chips · Prunes (surprisingly a hit!) · Small carrots and dip (for stops, bit messy in the car) · Cherry tomatoes When sitting for extended periods (two hours or more) we need foods that increase peristalsis (gut motility – think fibre) and foods that are light but filling, to reduce the bloat and hangries or salt/sugar cravings.

We traversed Melbourne to Adelaide and back with a three year old and one

year old without an iPad. So snacks were important for nourishment, time fillers, entertainment and practicing of manners!

Little, finger sized things that could be dished out a few at a time and cross over to lunch at park stops are key.

Foods that are lower in sugar and artificial ingredients and higher in easy to digest protein and fibre keep blood sugars regulated and encourage calm nervous systems (hyped up kids is not something you want on a road trip).

These also help with napping.

Burst of intermittent sweetness through (small intake) of dried fruit promotes healthy bowels, reduces trapped wind and bloat and encourages kids to think of these as everyday treats.

UNDER the cover of night a mystery visitor has been coming into the garden and helping himself to apples as they ripen on the tree.

Someone has been squeezing under the netting, climbing up and tucking into the fruit, leaving a cartoon-like core, with esh all chewed out, swinging from the branch.

Whoever or whatever it is, it has big teeth and seems to be hungry, although thankfully it is only taking one apple at a time, making me think it’s either a weightwatching possum or a considerate neighbour desperate for a midnight snack.

Ripe pome fruits are hard to resist, they look and smell divine, and it’s the essence of pear I particularly like about Piano Piano Pinot Grigio.

It was made by Marc Scalzo using traditional Italian wine making techniques and created from fruit sourced from favourite vineyards in Beechworth.

The wine has that familiar pear aroma, but it is also a little creamy with a hint of citrus.

The variety is deďŹ nitely one of my current favourites and it’s one we do so well in North East Victoria.

This version is a great example, with more pear fruit in the avour but it also has the zing of citrus at the dry ďŹ nish, which makes it versatile and food-friendly.

Try it with white meats or seafood - but I ďŹ nd it also goes very well with Thai or Cantonese-style dishes.

For now they’ll be take-away – if I don’t keep my eyes peeled tonight, I won’t be peeling any apples either.

The Apo-code-lypse: a million ways things can go wrong IT’S simple.

You put your foot on the accelerator and the car speeds up.

Put your foot on the brake and the car slows down.

You click your mouse to open a new document, begin typing, and words appear on your screen and are instantly saved to the cloud.

You tap a button and you’ve transferred money into a bank account.

Swipe a barcode and you’ve purchased a shirt.

Click, tap, type, swipe, scan - it couldn’t be easier.

Except it’s not easy.

It takes hundreds of thousands, if not millions of lines of code to do any of those things.

The modern car runs on one hundred million lines of code, on average, and this code controls virtually every function of your vehicle.

When you press your foot down on your car’s accelerator, for instance, you’re no longer controlling anything directly; there’s no mechanical link from the pedal to the throttle.

Instead, you’re issuing a

command to a piece of software that decides how much air to give the engine.

The car is a computer you can sit inside of.

The steering wheel and pedals might as well be keyboard keys or a joystick.

Technological progress used to change the way the world looked - you could watch the roads getting paved; you could see the skylines rise.

Today, you can hardly tell when something is remade, because so often it is remade by code.

Like everything else, the car has been computerised to enable new features.

When a program is in charge of the throttle and brakes, it can slow you down when you’re too close to another car, or precisely control the fuel injection to help you save on gas.

When it controls the steering, it can keep you in your lane as you start to drift, or guide you into a parking space.

You couldn’t build these features without code.

If you tried, a car might weigh 50 tonnes - an immov-

able mass of clockwork.

Software has enabled us to make the most intricate machines that have ever existed.

And yet we have hardly noticed, because all of that complexity is packed into tiny silicon chips as millions and millions of lines of code.

But just because we can’t see the complexity doesn’t mean that it has gone away.

And it’s creating a big problem.

Renowned Dutch computer scientist Edsger Dijkstra wrote of the computer programmer in 1988, “[They have] to be able to think in terms of conceptual hierarchies that are much deeper than a single mind ever needed to face before”.

While it may have been taken as complimentary, it was meant as a warning, as Dijkstra felt programmers were overestimating themselves as they built the critical systems that today rule the world.

The simple fact is, throughout the evolutionary history of our species, and the progenitors to our species, our brains were never equipped to think like a computer does, and our

attempts to translate our will into machine code present both limitations and consequences.

In many ways, conceptualisation of the limitations and consequences of thinking like a machine was easier in the earliest days of computer programming, when code took the form of actual binary language - ones and zeros.

If you were to glance at the programmer’s code, it would be impossible to tell if they were calculating the trajectory of nuclear warheads or playing a game of noughts and crosses.

In such an example, it would be easy to see just how removed the programmer was from the problem they were trying to solve.

And while it’s true that programming languages did get more sophisticated, the programs that run our day to day lives are infinitely more complicated - and our languages just haven’t kept pace.

And it’s costing us our ability to identify major errors in our programs before they can potentially cost lives or liveli-

hoods.

This was perhaps never clearer than in 2015, when on a single day, United Airlines grounded its fleet because of a problem with its departuremanagement system; trading was suspended on the New York Stock Exchange after an upgrade; the front page of The Wall Street Journal’s website crashed; and Seattle’s emergency services system went down.

The simultaneous failure of so many software systems smelled at first of a coordinated cyber attack against the U.S. Almost more frightening was the realisation, late in the day, that it was just a coincidence.

Also in 2015, security researchers Charlie Miller and Chris Valasek demonstrated that a 2014 model SUV could be remotely controlled by hackers.

They took advantage of the fact that the car’s entertainment system, which had a cellular connection, was connected to more central systems, like the one that controls the

windshield wipers, steering, acceleration, and brakes.

They even showed it was possible to use the onboard computer of the hacked SUV to scan for and hack into other vehicles.

Had they wanted to, they could have had access to a nationwide fleet of remotely controlled vehicles.

And how was this possible?

Simply put, there were so many lines of code that all the points of vulnerability could never be detected, assuming the people looking could even anticipate all the types of attacks or faults that could potentially occur, which they couldn’t.

In the upcoming world of autonomous cars, and medical robots the software we write can’t be tacked together piecemeal from one built upon iteration to the next.

It can’t be spaghetti, with large redundant chunks that loop around and do nothing.

It needs to be understood, intrinsically, and in order for that to occur the foundation of how we write code and create software needs to change.
