A Christmas worth saving for.

WHETHER it is tickling the ivories at a community event, providing accompaniment for a stage production, or providing majestic organ music for church services, Beechworth’s Sandra Williams is not far away.

She has spent decades playing and teaching music, and has lost none of her passion for her favourite pastime.

“I just love the thrill of being involved in all different types of music,” she said.

“It’s the ability to put your mind somewhere else.

“You’ll play a piece of music and you absolutely know what the composer was thinking of at the time.”

That includes pieces for this weekend’s Opera in the Alps at Beechworth.

While Sandra is not on stage, she has forged a connection with those performing in the event, playing for Opera Scholars Australia and choir rehearsals in the lead up to the prestigious event.

She will also be accompanying three Opera Scholars Australia finalists at a performance at Brown Brothers in Milawa this Sunday.

Her involvement with Opera in the Alps began in 2014 when the Beechworth Anglican Church, where she is an organist, was sought as a rehearsal venue.

Sandra was talking with organisers Graeme and Margot Wall, discovering they were all past Melbourne University students, and her involvement with the event’s rehearsals have grown ever since.

She said she loves helping because of “the sheer professionalism of the conductors and the people working with the choir”.

What’s in your garden: Deciduous trees, fruit trees, citrus trees, conifer and native ground covers, roses, compost bays, maples, waterfall, gabions, crepe myrtles, crab apples and a smoke tree.

What do you enjoy about gardening: I like to do as much as I can before calling in the machinery, planting and then nurturing until the shrub, tree or vegetable reaches its fullness.

Then you can stand back

and admire all that you have done.

Favourite plant/spot in your garden: I spend a lot of time in my vege garden; it is nearest to my chook yard.

Ornamental pears, I have all varieties suitable for this region.

Water saving/ conservation tip: Watering must be either in the morning or late evening.

To mulch as much as you can around plants and trees, it reduces water evaporation.

Use soaker water systems under mulch instead of above ground sprays.

Always look for drought hardy plants.

Your tips to keep gardens in top shape: Do a little bit every day.

That way it will always be enjoyable and not a chore.

AS the days heat up, life in the garden for both plants and people can get hot, very hot.

Water and shade are vital, so formulate a plan of attack to beat the summer heat.

Work in the garden early morning or late afternoon and thanks to daylight savings, take advantage of the longer daylight hours to work in the cooler evening.

If you must be out in heat, remember to slip, slop, slap and drink water regularly to remain hydrated.

Potted plants dry out very quickly, especially in full sun, so move them to a position protected from the hot afternoon sun.

To help keep the roots cool and provide moisture and humidity, place a saucer filled with sand underneath the pot and keep it moist. Pots may need watering twice a day in extreme conditions.

Move indoor plants away from sunny western facing windows.

Wipe the leaves with a damp cloth to remove any dust and refresh the leaves.

Mist with water to increase the humidity and deter pests.

Plants in hanging baskets also suffer in the heat, so move these into spots that are shaded in the afternoon.

If they become very dry, soak the basket in a bucket of water with added

Seasol for about an hour until it has rehydrated.

The best time to water plants is in the morning, as this allows the foliage to dry out completely, reducing the risk of mildew and other fungal diseases.

A simple preventative fungal spray can be made by mixing one part cow’s milk to 10 parts water and sprayed weekly over the foliage of susceptible plants. Top up the mulch after watering.

To keep plants in peak health, feed them fortnightly with a liquid foliar fertiliser.

Water the roots of fruiting and flowering plants with potash to improve flavour and increase fruit set.

Ulna growth plate fractures in puppies THE long bones of young puppies grow rapidly from areas at their ends called growth plates.

Unfortunately these areas are also quite fragile and can be damaged by trauma.

In areas where the limbs are made up of just one bone (such as the femur in the thigh or the humerus in the upper arm) the impact is a slightly shortened bone.

As dogs stand with quite a bent leg they can easily adjust to having one limb slightly shorter than the others.

In addition most of the long bones have multiple growth plates and if one is disrupted then the others can pick up the slack.

Where a major problem arises is in the forelimb of the dog where the paired radius and ulna bones reside.

The ulna’s lower growth plate accounts for over 70 per cent of the growth of the ulna and its conical shape means it is easily damaged.

If this growth plate is damaged

then the ulna stops growing, but the radius continues to grow as normal.

You can picture the problem that arises as looking like a bow and arrow.

The short ulna is the string and the longer radius becomes bowed as it grows because the ends are still constrained to the top and bottom of the ulna at the elbow and wrist.

This abnormal growth distorts the appearance of the leg and also distorts the wrist and elbow joints.

The resultant joint disruption then leads to poor function of the joints and early onset of arthritis and lameness.

The key to correcting this issue is recognising that a problem has occurred early on.

If a pup is in an accident and starts limping on a front leg, damage to the growth plates should always be considered.

Your veterinarian will be able to help assess and monitor the growth of the legs and then

suggest an operation if required.

If detected early the ulna can be cut and a graft of fat placed between its ends to delay it from healing.

This allows the radius to continue its growth and the ulna will bridge the gap with time.

Luckily the radius bears most of the weight and a pup can handle having an ulna with a gap for a while.

If the problem is not detected until late in the piece then much more complex surgery to cut and straighten the leg is required for a favourable outcome.

RESTORE SIGHT FOR JUST $25

ON STAGE: Sandra Williams made a splash on-stage as part of the band in the Wangaratta Players Inc production of Cabaret.

“I was able to play simple music by ear…I just copied things I heard on the radio,” she said.

Her aptitude was hardly surprising, given her grandfather was adept at playing all manner of brass instruments, her father performed with the RAAF Central band, and her mother also came from a very musical family.

Sandra began piano lessons at seven and throughout her schooling she regularly played piano for ballroom dancing classes and local dances, before leaving Beechworth and studying at the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music.

Music never stopped playing a big part in her life.

She had a long career with Yamaha Music - including teaching now prominent conductor Nicholas Milton, among the nominees at this year’s Grammy Awards – and also trained music teachers, working as an examiner for the Australian Music Examinations Board.

Sandra retired to Beechworth

in 2008 and has scarcely slowed down, playing with jazz bands, accompanying singers and choirs at a range of events in the North East, and playing the organ in Beechworth’s Anglican Church (where she also played as a teenager).

She is also well known in theatre circles, contributing accompaniment to productions ranging from Cabaret with Wangaratta Players Inc, to Beauty and the Beast with Albury Wodonga Theatre Company, and Wind in the Willows with Beechworth Theatre Company.

Looking back on her life and career, Sandra is grateful for all that she has been able to do and be part of.

“I’ve just been so lucky to have had all the opportunities that I have had,” she said.

Graeme is a former Wangaratta resident who came home at Christmas time to visit his family.

They went fishing, right here in the middle of Wangaratta.

Using KFC popcorn chicken for bait, Graeme landed a massive 105cm Murray cod on a 4kg braided line.

His catch is a reminder that there are a few big fish in the rivers if you’re willing to think outside the

G’DAY everyone, and welcome to another year of tight lines and big fish.

During the Christmas period North East Victoria was hit hard by thunderstorms, which saw water river and stream levels go up and down like a yoyo.

We have seen flushes of dirty water pushing through the local waterways which has made it hard to choose exactly where to go fishing.

At the moment the Ovens River upstream of Wangaratta is looking fantastic.

The last of the flushes have pushed through and the river is in top condition.

The King River is okay upstream around Moyhu, but down closer to Wangaratta it is not great.

It is improving, but still a bit dirty.

The Kiewa River is looking great - I crossed it at Tangambalanga a few days ago and it looks fantastic.

The Murray cod fishing has been hit and miss over the last few weeks as a result of the fluctuating conditions, however, most people have still managed to land a few.

This includes nine year old Paxton Kneebone of Wangaratta, who caught his first Murray cod on a yellow stumpjumper lure trolling underneath the bridge at the junction, right here in Wangaratta last week.

Paxton released his magnificent 52cm Murray cod to fight another day – well done young man.

Falafel chicken with cucumber, chickpea and orange salad THIS recipe from Dairy Australia makes for a zesty and light midsummer meal.

Method 1. Slice chicken breast horizantally into 2 thin steaks.

2. Place 1 cup yogurt into a shallow bowl and whisk in enough water for it to reach the consistency of thickened cream. Dip chicken into the yogurt mixture, shaking off the excess and then coat in falafel mix.

3. Arrange crumbed chicken on a baking paper lined oven tray and spray with oil. Bake at 200°C for 10 minutes, then carefully turn over and cook for a further 5 minutes or until golden and cooked through.

4. Combine remaining yogurt with tahini and lemon juice to make a sauce.

5. For the salad, halve the cucumber lengthways and scoop out the seeds with a teaspoon. Slice diagonally and place in a bowl with the orange segments and juice, chickpeas, mint

Will you be bold in 2016?

I WONDER how many of the predictions being made for 2016 will come home to roost.

The share market has started off very wobbly, with more talk of pain in respect of a slowing down in China which will no doubt send shivers up the spine of our exporters (especially coal and iron ore).

With low interest rates and economic growth being poor, returns for investors in 2016 will be tested unless they change their strategies.

Australian Unity chief investment officer David Bryant said in an article I was reading: “Whatever you’ve been doing isn’t going to work; it hasn’t been working for some time”.

It would appear that if you want to make money on the stock market this year then you will need to choose your purchases carefully.

After a horrible 2015 year, resource stocks look like there will be little or no returns in the year ahead.

And it would seem that banks will not fare too much better either.

The combination of additional

capital controls, APRA wanting to limit housing lending, and with bad debts at record lows and a reluctance of the Reserve Bank to lift interest rates, it’s really hard to see how there will be much growth in the next year in the banking sector.

Some 30 to 35 percent of listed companies would maintain dividends, but are looking to record lacklustre earnings growth.

So, given this is about 65 percent of the market, it leaves about 35 per cent of the market to work with and generate returns.

Interesting to note that the major investment banks have trimmed their year-end 2016 targets for the index.

Citi has a target of 5900, whilst Goldman Sachs tips the index to reach 5600 by year end.

An increase to 5600 would be a 5.6 per cent rise on 2015 year end

index of 5296.

Some analysists expect the market to outperform in 2016 and they are of the belief that mining companies are a large part of it.

If you willing to take a longer view, there is compelling value in some of the resource stocks said David McDonald, Credit Suisse private banking and wealth management chief investment officer for Australia.

But not all appears to be bad.

Brickworks for the first time in a decade kept open all their factories over the Christmas period to meet the demand created by frenzied new home building on the east coast.

The boss of Brickworks, Lindsay Partridge, said he has only a few days’ stock on hand at some sites and he was feeling good about business in 2016.

Not since 1994 when the

previous record of 187,000 new homes was achieved, have we achieved a 13 per cent rise to a record 211,860 new homes which were commenced in 2014/2015 and which has been reflected in the earnings of building materials suppliers like Brickworks, CSR and Boral.

The Housing Industry Association is tipping the 2015/2016 year to also exceed 200,000 new home starts.

So this looks like it may be an area for the investors to set their sights upon.

And with new homes comes the need for white goods such as refrigerators, washing machines, heating and cooling, dishwashers and all the other small appliances that turn a house into a home.

Talk to your broker now, not halfway through the year, if this is of interest.
