WHILE her life was changed forever with the removal of a brain tumour eight years ago, Belinda Curro lives each day determined to give back to her community and her family. The Wangaratta mum recently returned from Cambodia and Vietnam, where she, along with a group of other community minded cyclists known as Cycle Power, helped raise funds for a Cambodian wheelchair basketball team. The group - a combination of able bodied riders and cyclists living with a disability operates under the auspices of Disability Sport and Recreation (DSR) and have worked hard for several years to help Cambodian women from the Battambang women’s wheelchair basketball team. They have donated special wheelchairs over the past few years, and Belinda said that now the group is well enough equipped to hopefully qualify for the 2020 Paralympic Games. Belinda, who cycles using a specially adapted hand cycle, said that training and preparing for the 500km ride from Siem Reap in Cambodia to Saigon in Vietnam had been rewarding in itself, and improved her lease on life. Months of tackling the hills of the Warby Range and Glenrowan was work she didn’t mind, saying that when she was sick in 2008, and trying to get well for the sake of her three children, she received help and support from countless people. “I was not expected to walk, talk or eat again,” she said of the prognosis from her tumour surgery. “For me, it’s like giving back. “I want to give back to people who are less fortunate than us.” continued page |
