By KYLIE WILSON SUSTAINABILITY and ingenuity go hand in hand for those behind the homes that will be open to the public this year for Sustainable House Day this Sunday.

Nestled on a walnut farm in the tranquil bush surrounds of Gapsted is one such home - Cortes Kiln - owned by local resident Ronaldo Cortes.

The home is in high demand on Airbnb, and Ronaldo said the backbone of the home is a historic, century old brick tobacco kiln, indelibly tied to the history of the area.

In the renovation, which was designed by Whispering Smith Architects, the original fibro shack that was attached to the kiln was stripped back, and its timber frame was clad in a translucent skin as well as recycled timber.

The overall aim was a solar passive design, which includes insulated living and sleeping areas, an internal green courtyard, thermodynamic hot water system, solar panels, and ground level gutters to reduce fire risk.

Ronaldo, who lives nearby, said he worked alongside the architect to create the home’s minimal, Scandinavian design and added that during the building process, it was important to him to use local tradespeople and source materials as much as possible from local businesses.

The garden is also filled with native and water wise plants, with composting and organic elements.

Ronaldo said that he also plans to eventually live in the home himself and added that it was designed for minimal living.

Get out and about on local mountains

WHILE the snow season is winding down, there are still events to enjoy on our local mountains.

Throughout this weekend, you can take in a photography exhibition by David Rosendale, encompassing a 12 month photographic study of seasonal change and environment at Falls Creek.

The exhibition is being held at QT Falls Creek.

This Saturday you can check out the last leg in the Falls Freestyle Series, which will be contested on the medium line at Panorama Terrain Park.

At Mt Hotham, Chicks With Stix will take place throughout this weekend, which is a grassroots level weekend which gets women together to learn new snowsport tricks and make new friends.

Hotham Hero Pass Holders can attend the mountain’s Hero Pass Appreciation Day this Saturday to receive some complimentary treats.

Saturday will also see Retro Day at Mt Hotham, where participants are encouraged to dress up in their most outrageous and colourful ski gear and enjoy a day of celebration, topped off by fireworks and an after party.

This weekend also sees the action of the Hotham Junior Freeride event at Mt Hotham.

Over at Mt Buller, the mountain is hosting the 2018 Mt Buller Wild West Adventure Race this Saturday, with pairs racing to 10 secret checkpoints to be in running for cash and prizes.

At Mt Buffalo, while snow cover is beginning to thin out, conditions remain great for tobogganing, cross country skiing, snow shoeing or simple snow play.

A good time to fertilise WELL, spring has arrived and bought with it beautiful mild days and the promise of more to come.

Dormant trees and roses are bursting into new growth and blossoms are appearing everywhere you look.

As the weather warms up and plants are gearing up for a big growth spurt, now is the time to feed your garden.

There are many options with fertilisers, but this task doesn’t have to be complicated.

There are some plants that need a specific fertiliser, natives for example, but most plants will appreciate a complete feed at this time of the year.

It is important to read the instructions on whichever fertiliser you choose so the plants will get the most out of it and not get burnt or over fed.

is high in phosphorus so it is important to use a specific fertiliser in this case.

At the end of winter, citrus trees often look ‘dull’.

They may have light green leaves sometimes with yellow veins.

This is sure sign that your tree is deficient and needs magnesium.

Most citrus fertilisers will have the correct balance of trace elements the tree needs.

Mulch and water the tree well after fertilising.

Keeping the tree well watered is just as important as feeding it.

A citrus tree suffering from being dry will prematurely drop fruit or produce dry fruit lacking flavour.

Fruit trees are beginning to blossom which means it won’t be long before you start seeing tiny fruit forming.

Feed the tree now with a complete

feed, keep it well watered and mulch around the base, making sure to keep the mulch clear of the trunk.

Start putting out fruit fly traps.

If you have had problems with coddling moth in your apples, it is important to put strategies in place to help prevent them infecting your fruit again.

There are a few options for treatment so come down and see us at the nursery to discuss which best suits you.

If you have large garden beds with a variety of plants in them it is easier to use an organic pelleted fertiliser that specifies on the label that it is suitable for all plants, including natives.

There are many jobs to enjoy in the garden at this time of the year not, just fertilising, but I will chat about them next time.

Pancreatitis in dogs – how treats can be trouble THE pancreas is an organ in the abdomen which has various functions.

It is important in secreting hormones such as insulin to regulate blood glucose, as well as digestive enzymes to assist with breaking down food in the intestines.

Acute pancreatitis is where the pancreas becomes inamed and damaged.

This occurs because the digestive enzymes, normally released by the pancreas to digest food, actually begin to digest the pancreas itself!

These enzymes can also be very damaging to surrounding tissues.

Furthermore, toxins may be released which cause wideranging effects to other body systems and can lead to further disease such as diabetes or even death.

It can sometimes be difficult to identify the initial cause of pancreatitis, however there are some common contributing factors.

Pancreatitis is often triggered when the dog has ingested a meal or treats which are high in fat content. Examples include marrow bones or left-over’s

Other predisposing factors include obesity or other concurrent hormonal imbalances.

The symptoms of acute pancreatitis can include a combination of appetite loss, depression, vomiting, diarrhoea, a painful abdomen or fever.

Diagnosis is achieved through taking a thorough history, performing a physical exam, running in house blood tests and using ultrasonography.

Once acute pancreatitis has been diagnosed, the dog is very likely to require hospitalisation to undergo treatment.

This includes uid therapy, pain relief and anti-nausea medication to reverse dehydration and get the dog eating again.

Once the dog is well enough to go home, they are required to be on a low-fat diet until the pancreas makes a full recovery.

In some cases, dogs may require more permanent changes to their diet to reduce the chance of further pancreatitis episodes.

Just a short drive away, in Yackandandah, is Fabian and Robyn Burder’s Snail House, which was designed and built by Fabian, who runs Quantech Design in Wangaratta.

The house is so named because its shape and design resembles the shell of a snail, and Fabian said he spent a year in the planning stages, and the home was built over a nine month period. “It’s incredibly efficient,� he said of the home, noting that while he was designing the home, he embraced the engineering challenge of designing a strawbale home that was also contemporary in design. “We were determined that it would be a strawbale house with a little bit of class. “It is designed to be energy efficient and make full use of passive solar and of natural light. “The windows are double glazed and there is generous insulation to complement the straw bales.

“The power system is off grid solar with generator backup. “It is a very comfortable house to live in and its efficiency has surprised us.�

Fabian said that an environmentally friendly design is important to him. “Sustainability, efficiency and environmental friendliness is just common sense,� he said. “This house is built with plenty of insulation, facing, the right way, plenty of light, and the result is a very efficient house which is delightful to live in. “The house is very comfortable in summer with no air conditioning, and in winter the whole house is cosy. “It has lots of light and the render and woodwork gives it a nice organic feel. “Apart from the house, living out of town in Yackandandah is just wonderful. “We both grew up on farms, and it is great to return to that life.�

A few more trout caught

LAST week’s rainfall was just what the doctor ordered.

It was not enough to break the drought, but it was enough to give the rivers and streams across the North East a good flush and ensure they maintain a decent flow of water for quite some time.

Last week I mentioned the poor trout fishing around the region.

This week I have a slight improvement in my report.

I now have a few half decent reports from around the region.

I have had a couple of reports of trout being caught in the Ovens River upstream of Bright, and trout being caught in the Kiewa River close to Mt Beauty.

Also, just to help you decide where to go fishing, I had one report of terrible trout fishing in the Mitta Mitta River near Eskdale.

I have managed to pick up a few trout by drifting worms in a couple of the smaller streams but have had to work really hard for them.

Thanks to the blackberry bushes I currently have more holes in me than my late grandmothers favourite pin cushion could ever dream of.

Young fishing legend James Lennox sent me an awesome photo on Snapchat, along with some instructions on how to use Snapchat and save the photo.

James caught a ripper brown trout on worms in a small tributary of the

I have been on annual leave and have been enjoying fishing the Broken Creek between Katamatite and Numurkah where I have caught a few carp and a couple of nice yellowbelly.

I caught them all angling with worms.

My greatest tip for anybody heading over that way fishing is to take plenty of Zyrtec or Claritin.

Between the canola and the wattle, what I experienced goes beyond a box of tissues and a jar of Vicks - I’m sure that region is the hayfever capital of the country.

Rutherglen Estates 2016 Viognier Rousanne Marsanne APPARENTLY there are something called International Wine Days - days where particular wine varieties are celebrated around the world.

There are days for Cabernet, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc and even Merlot and Moscato get a guernsey.

It’s designed to stimulate a bit of conversation, let producers and marketers spruik their wares and generally draw attention to the wonderful wines of the world.

I guess we could also look at it as another excuse to indulge and a way of making up our minds, especially if like me, you love them all and sometimes find it too hard to choose.

I recently settled in on the couch and enjoyed a lightly chilled glass of Rutherglen’s Renaissance VRM - and it’s probably one that deserves its own special day.

This is a serious wine, grown in Rutherglen, harvested in small

with Anita McPherson batches, fermented in new and old oak and allowed to mature over time with minimal disturbance.

The portions are skilfully blended to produce a beautifully balanced wine which truly expresses the sum of its parts.

It’s quite a vivid, golden yellow colour and very aromatic, heady with honeysuckle and warm vanilla spice.

It also has a lovely weight and soft texture, with flavours of creamy, peach-like stone fruit, finishing with pleasant zing of citrus acidity.

And boy, that complex flavour certainly does last.

It’s one to enjoy slowly while nibbling at a plate of beautiful cheeses.

This Day in History, 1867 THE Yackandandah Shire celebrated on September 12, 1867, when not one, but two bridges were officially brought into service.

The bridges where named by a daughter of Thomas Mitchell, who did the ceremonial swinging of the bottle of wine.

Of the two braidges across the Kiewa, or Little River as it was sometimes known, the larger structure waas named the “Kiewa”, while the smaller, which spanned the lagoon, was christened the “Buckeye”.

THESE days, getting food delivered to your doorstep is a fairly easy affair, particularly if you live in a big city.

There’s a veritable buffet of fast food delivery services, along with easy to use apps that can have you chowing down in a matter of minutes - even in more rural areas like ours.

But there is a least one frontier the armies of convenient food dispensary have yet to conquer - space.

No one delivers pizza in space.

It’s sad but true.

If you want to grow up to be an astronaut someday, don’t do it for the fancy meals.

Eating in space presents some unique challenges for astronauts.

For a start, the lack of gravity means that if you let go of a piece of food, it will float off and drift around your space vehicle.

So too for cups of liquid.

Liquid won’t stay in a cup, it, too, will float out and hang in the air.

To allow astronauts to stay in space for days or weeks at a time, scientists had to invent specialised ways of packaging and eating foods in space.

The first such space foods were soft foods (kind of like baby food) packaged in tubes like toothpaste.

For example, John Glenn became the first U.S. astronaut to eat in space when he ate applesauce from an aluminum tube during a 1962 Mercury space mission.

He had to squeeze the food into his mouth.

If that doesn’t sound very appetising to you, you’re not alone.

Astronauts weren’t exactly crazy about it either.

Eventually, scientists developed better, tastier foods that were easier to eat.

Freeze-drying was one such method of transporting more nutritious food into space.

Food was cooked, quickly frozen, and then dehydrated in a special vacuum chamber.

This meant that the food didn’t need to be refrigerated and would last a long time.

To consume the freeze-dried foods, astronauts squeeze hot water into the food packages and then eat the food after it absorbs the water.

Some freeze-dried foods, like fruit, can be eaten dry.

In fact, you may eat astronaut food from time to time without realising it.

Today, many breakfast cereals include freeze-dried fruits, like strawberries, that add color and flavor to an otherwise bland breakfast.

Astronauts flying modern space shuttle missions now eat many of the same foods they eat on Earth.

Food still needs to be dehydrated or prepared in special ways, but space shuttles now have full kitchens with hot water and an oven.

recent specials, he prepared gourmet meals for British astronaut Tim Peake to take with him to the International Space Station, including zero-gravity bacon sandwiches, packed inside airtight tins.

Astronauts can also use condiments, like ketchup, mustard, and mayonnaise, in packets to add flavor. Salt and pepper can be used, too, but they have to be used in a liquid form because otherwise the grains would just float away.

Drinks are also dehydrated and kept in powder form in special pouches.

The pouches have built-in straws or special nozzles that let astronauts drink straight from the pouch since gravity makes drinking from a cup a messy idea.

To make sure their food doesn’t float off, astronauts attach their food containers and utensils to special trays with Velcro fasteners.

The trays also fasten to their laps, so they can enjoy a meal while sitting down.

Nutritionists plan astronaut meals to make sure they get all of the nutrients and vitamins they need to perform their important work in space, as some astronauts begin to experience digestive problems after they’ve been in space a long time.

So the next time you order a pizza to be delivered to yuor doorstep, spare a thought for the astronauts out there, and the complexity of the task to feed them.
