NORTH East communities are helping Vanuatu recover from the category five Tropical Cyclone Pam, that left a trail of devastation throughout Vanuatu’s southern provinces of Shefa and Tafea in March this year.

Aid agencies described the cyclone as one of the worst disasters to ever hit the Pacific region, with around 75,000 people in need of emergency shelter, and 96 per cent of food crops destroyed.

But the tragedy has galvanised community members and groups in the North East to lend a hand to help the area rebuild, with much effort centred on the Tafea province island of Erromango, where the cyclone devastated both homes and the local sandalwood growing industry.

The island has been receiving donations from businesses and schools in Beechworth and across the North East over recent months, with Beechworth couple Jeff and Susi Allen heading up fundraising and charity efforts, which have included social evenings and more.

Farming tools and equipment, books for school libraries and household items are being collected at Beechworth and Melbourne drop off points.

Men’s Shed members from across the North East and beyond have also donated various tools for both rebuilding and stocking a future trade school on the island.

School students from Beechworth Montessori have also baked and sold food to raise money, and many local businesses have donated prizes for a fundraising raffle, including Pennyweight Engineering (who donated a fire unit), Sorrenberg Winery (donated wine) and Paynes Hut (donated accommodation). continued page |

How to treat food intolerance

Finishing winter tasks

WITH the current cold, wet and frosty weather it’s hard to believe that spring is just around the corner, so rug up and finish off those winter tasks in the garden.

Pruning is one of the main tasks carried out during winter while the plants are dormant and leafless.

Deciduous fruit trees are pruned to promote new growth and better fruiting.

Young fruit trees need to be pruned to form an open vase shaped framework.

Remove stems from the centre of the plant and prune off any inwards growing branches.

Remove any damaged or weak growth. Prune all other branches back by half to an outwards facing bud.

More established trees still need to be pruned in a similar way to maintain the vase shape and also to reduce the height of the trees so fruit is produced at an easy to reach level when harvesting.

Roses respond well to a hard winter prune with beautiful blooms in the spring and summer.

Cut back by half to two thirds, removing any dead or diseased wood and any inwards growth.

Prune just above an outwards facing bud as this is the direction new growth will face.

MILK FED: Sometimes it may be necessary to cut out foods such as dairy for better health, if you have been shown to have an intolerance.

Will I grow out of my food intolerance?

Food intolerance can make you feel tired, lethargic, mucousy or constipated.

Healthy prunings can be used to take cuttings.

After pruning, spray fruit trees and roses with a copper based spray to eliminate any fungal diseases lying dormant in the bark.

Fungal diseases include curly leaf in fruit trees and black spot in roses.

Bare rooted trees and roses should be planted soon as they are slowly waking up.

Planting during winter reduces transplant shock and gives the plants time to establish a sound root system before the hotter summer weather.

Preparation for the spring veggie garden should be done now by improving the soil.

Remove any weeds and dig over, incorporating some manure, compost and blood and bone.

Sow a quick green crop of mustard seed or lupins to dig in to the soil to add extra nitrogen.

And if it is too wet to get outside, sow some seeds ready to plant in spring.

GIVEN that incidences of childhood and adult allergies such as eczema, tummy related food intolerance and asthma are on the rise, we thought it would be a good idea to write an article about how naturopaths address food allergies and intolerances.

Although no one likes the idea of giving up dairy or wheat or any other food group, sometimes it can make a big difference to how you are feeling.

Bloating, sore tummies, nausea, fatigue and skin rashes are not normal, and it is easy to address them if food intolerance is part of the problem.

In these cases, the purpose of avoiding a specific food is to reduce the irritation and sensitivity of your digestive and immune system to allow these to rebuild and repair.

When they are dealing with you eating the offending food everyday you will be using up masses of zinc, B vitamins and other minerals to mop up the damage, that normally keep your body energised and symptom free.

Your naturopath will advise you when to re- introduce the food once your digestive system is stronger, or whether you need to find alternatives long term.

Food sensitivities are the underlying culprit in many disease states, especially affecting the bowels, skin and respiratory systems.

Referral to specialist veterinarians THE veterinary profession is rapidly advancing with many new specialty fields available.

Many veterinarians choose to do further studies in a field of interest and sit exams to become veterinary specialists.

Overseas the specialist professions are booming and are readily available across most states.

In Australia our techniques and services are continually advancing and becoming more widespread.

In mixed practice, like here in the North East, immediate referral to emergency centres is limited by distance.

Rural veterinarians are trained and equipped to manage emergency situations and to stabilise shocked and injured animals.

Unlike their city counterparts rural veterinary practices often offer 24 hour services due to the lack of local emergency centres.

Distance, and in many situations cost, can make referral impossible for both emergency and non-emergency cases.

From the North East the closest referral centres are located in

Melbourne or Wagga Wagga.

With modern technology so advanced, communication between the specialists and local practices is allowing access to their expertise and guidance in particular situations.

Where warranted local veterinarians will offer referral as one of many treatment options.

There is no right or wrong answer to the question “would you like to go for referral?” as every individual situation varies.

Not being able to or not wanting to go for referral does not mean you are not providing the best for your pet or that you do not care about them.

Aside from specialist veterinarians in emergency care, medicine and surgery, there are also specialist dermatologists, ophthalmologists, equine and cattle veterinarians, radiologists, cardiologists, endocrinologists, oncologists and reproductive experts, each offering the best and most up to date technology and treatment for their cases.

These specialists are also involved in continuing education

for practicing veterinarians running conferences and workshops to keep the profession progressing across the board.

Many of these specialists provide day trips to rural locations to help make their services available to country clients.

Veterinarians are also playing crucial roles in advancing human medicine.

The veterinary field is continually developing with exciting new advances in both equipment and technique always around the corner.

The Allens, who run Pacific Provender, divide their time between Beechworth and Vanuatu in the course of running their

business, and the entire family have forged a bond with the area’s sandalwood farmers over many years.

Mr Allen, an experienced oil distiller, said he was passionate about helping the island rebuild after the devastating cyclone.

“We’re a conduit for them and the outside world,” said Jeff.

“There’s a real, strong connection with the North East.

“We’re putting all our effort and energy into supporting the farmers to rebuild their long term livelihoods as quickly as possible.”

Mt Hotham will see the 2015 Australian Biathlon Championships taking place on August 15-16.

This event will see entrants compete in a gruelling sprint format on the Whiskey Flat Mt Hotham Biathlon course.

Young Australians found to have worst credit scores

Mr Holmes (M) THE story is set in 1947, following a long-retired Sherlock Holmes living in a Sussex village with his housekeeper and rising detective son.

But then he finds himself haunted by an unsolved 50-year old case.

CONSUMER advocate, Credit Savvy, is encouraging young Australians to take an active interest in their finances to help set them up and avoid missing out on the great Australian dream of owning their own home in the future.

Recent data from credit reporting body, Experian, shows young Australians aged 1824 years have the lowest average credit score at 564, followed by 25 – 34 year olds at 610.

Both bands are below the national average of 649.

Credit scores and credit file information can be used by lenders to assess the credit worthiness of an individual and the likelihood that he or she will be able to repay a loan in the future. Higher credit scores can suggest to lenders that an individual has a history of financial responsibility and is less risky to lend to.

Experian data indicates that older age groups fare better in the credit score stakes, with average credit scores of 652 for 35-44s, 682 for 45-54s and 735 for over 55-year-olds.

These findings come at a time when the spotlight is on housing affordability and home ownership for the next generation.

Managing director of Credit Savvy, Dirk Hofman, is concerned younger consumers may be unaware that their credit behaviour can stay on their credit file for a number of years and potentially impact their ability to access credit in the future.

“Every time you apply for a credit card, that enquiry stays on your file for up to five years,” he said.

“If you make too many enquiries in a short time frame, you could lower your credit score.

“It’s tough enough saving up for a deposit without getting there and realising that you might’ve done something to jeopardise your credit reputation years earlier.

“I’d encourage young Australians to check their credit score and credit file to see where they stand.

“Even if younger consumers don’t intend to apply for a home loan or personal loan

2012 Nebbiolo Around $45 THERE is something a little bit whimsical and romantic about opening a bottle of wine with a corkscrew.

A twist top closure is just too easy and it takes away the excitement and sense of anticipation, mixed sometimes with a little frustration, as you try desperately to get to grips with the cork.

Despite plenty of practice, I gave up early on the waiter’s friend in favour of the butterfly, which allows me to twist the head and squeeze down the outstretched arms to ease the cork out.

I used it on a bottle of Virago Vineyard Nebbiolo and it was a satisfying prelude to the night.

The vineyard is situated in the Everton Hills and vigneron Karen Coats says the 2000 odd vines are pruned and managed carefully by hand to ensure a low yield of the highest quality fruit.

The wine is made by Rick

WITH ANITA McPHERSON Kinzbrunner in the traditional Italian method, including around three years of aging in an Italian Bota cask.

What you end up with is a deep and earthy red wine with an almost bronze-tinged hue, which has a distinctly savoury and spicy plum nose.

The flavour is complex and energetic, with tangy dark cherry and woody spices which seem to bring all your senses to life as you dip further into the glass.

We enjoyed it with roasted duck breast and the gaminess of the rich flesh was really accentuated by the toastiness and spicy fruit of the wine.

There are some traditions that are definitely worth continuing.

Lemon Meringue Pie

THIS DAY IN HISTORY IT is hard to imagine silence having a sound, and yet the sound of the silence in the hills and valleys around Eldorado on August 13, 1954 was acute indeed.

A constant roaring and clanking noise which had been part of the town’s way of life for almost 20 years, ceased, as Cock’s Eldorado Dredge was moored for the last time.

The dredge, the largest in the southern hemisphere, had moved mountains of earth, and recovered over 70,000 ounces of gold and over 1000 tons of tin during its noisy career.

Poor returns had made its continued operation uneconomic.

It was left to an uncertain future, and now is a fixture at its last anchorage.

I ASKED the staff for some ideas on what I should make for the paper this week, and it was a resounding vote for Lemon Meringue pie.

The fact I make and sell in the shop Lemon butter and Meringues, all I had to do was make a pastry case.

You can make your own pastry, but if short of time a bought one will do.

The Italian meringue does not need cooking just a browning on top.

You will need to put it under a grill if you don’t have a kitchen blowtorch.

Method Place the sugar and water in a small saucepan over a high heat.

Bring to the boil, stirring continuously with a wooden spoon until the sugar has dissolved.

Reduce the heat to medium and brush down sides of the saucepan with a wet pastry brush to prevent any sugar crystals forming.

Meanwhile, beat the egg whites with the cream of tartar in the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with a whisk attachment until soft peaks form.

Bring the sugar syrup to 121°C (hard ball stage), then increase the

That choice could be to sell and move, or even stay in the family home and I know how often I have thought about this myself.

Statistically, some 90 per cent of Australian couples over 65 own their own homes, which is the highest proportion in the world. $800 billion sounds a lot and

For many baby boomers, their home is their greatest source of wealth.

Wally David, a financial planner with Financial Planning Matters, says most of his clients have tended to downsize for practical reasons, then moved to smaller one floor houses closer to amenities.

But he expects more senior Australians to downsize to unlock that equity to help fund their retirement and pay off their mortgages so they remain debt free.

I also believe that big gardens and pools can become a burden as we age and a smaller property will allow retirees to spend more time on things they enjoy.

Buying and selling a house in Victoria can be expensive as you will need to pay stamp duty of 5.5 per cent, together with agent fees and removal costs.

Just because you would like to move, ensure that you are thinking long term.

There are many two storey homes where the main bedroom is upstairs, and this may be alright while you are young and agile, but should you need a lift to be installed is this really the property for you.
