FOR more than a quarter of a century, Eurobin’s Allan Findlay, decked out in 19th century clothes and a tri-corn hat, has been synonymous with the Bright Autumn Festival as its town crier. He moved to the Alpine Shire in 1988 and had joined Bright Apex soon after, and it was not long before Bright Autumn Festival committee member Lyn Dickens invited him to fulfil the duties of town crier. As an outgoing member of the community, Allan said he relished meeting new people each year, as well as welcoming back locals and regular visitors to town. He is in constant demand from people wanting photos with him, and friends he made as town crier even attended his 50th birthday party. “I’ve made lifelong friends,” Allan enthused. “I’ve been fortunate to have been accepted by all ages. “It’s all about making people feel welcome.” As town crier, Allan has done everything from leading the festival parade to wandering throughout the festival and making announcements. He said some of the most heartwarming moments have been meeting with and befriending people living with disabilities, and helping put them at ease. Even the bell he rings is a little piece of history, as it is over 100 years old and was used to call farmhands on an old property in the area. Like many, Allan finds himself drawn to Bright’s autumn colours and joyful atmosphere during the festival, held in such a “wonderful place, and a great community”. And he is among a range of long term local residents who have helped keep the festival running over the years. continued page |
