Helping capture legacies

“It’s almost like presenting or sharing a snapshot of your life,” she said.

“It’s just a snippet of a moment of life, captured truthfully and authentically.”

An established writer and a prolific contributor to Australian literary journals, anthologies and magazines, Kate is passionate about both storytelling and being an active member of the community.

One of her short stories, Potholes, has been so well received that she has worked together on making it into a short film with Yackandandah resident Brendan Hogan.

“It’s about a man who feels ‘stuck’ in his life and finds a way to connect to creativity in his community,” she said.

“It’s been an amazing process.

“I love being part of a rural community, and the Yackandandah community is very supportive of the arts.”

As well as her own work, Kate has found much joy running recent workshops at St John’s Retirement Village in Wangaratta on memoir writing as part of their Life Stories program.

She was invited to share her insights and experience by program coordinator Rod Davis and said it was a “great opportunity to teach memoir writing to some wonderful people”. continued page |

How to plant spring flowering bulbs

What’s in your garden: We started planting trees because the block was pretty bare and hot, dry and windy.

We started planting only the hardiest plants and things we could grow ourselves from cuttings and seeds.

Once we developed a bit of a microclimate, we started collecting better plants and growing plants from all over the world. We love perennials and succulents.

What do you enjoy about gardening: It’s good for the body…It’s good for the mind…It’s good for the environment….It’s good

for birds and wildlife…It’s good for other people who visit the garden.

Favourite plant/spot in your garden: We spend more time on the verandah than anywhere else.

We read books together with feet up on the verandah rail.

We feed the birds so there are often 14 King Parrots or more and sometimes hundreds of Red Brow Finches there with us.

During the long drought Tina counted 34 different species of native birds using the bird-bath while I read to her one hot afternoon.

Water saving/conservation tip: Ever since we bought the place in 1980 we have raked up the autumn leaves of street trees in town and brought them home for the garden and also any other form of organic matter or manure we could buy or get our hands on to add to the soil.

We started with granite gravel so things were desperate.

Tips to keep gardens in good shape: Don’t go on holidays.

We recently had our 34th wedding anniversary and we still haven’t been away for our honeymoon.

SPRING-flowering bulbs are traditionally planted in autumn.

In the North East region, bulbs are usually planted during April but this year with the continuing warmer temperatures, and dry conditions, I have delayed planting mine until now, early May. I placed an early order with a grower at the Henty Field days back in September last year and the parcel arrived in the mail early March.

I have been waiting for the right conditions since then.

With the break in the weather, some decent rain and cooler temperatures, the soil temperature has finally dropped, suitable for planting.

Anytime from now until late May is good for planting spring flowering bulbs.

Bulbs are available from nurseries and garden centres, mail order, bulb societies and specialist growers.

They are dug up, packaged and sold when they are dormant.

Before planting, check the condition of the bulbs.

Avoid any that are soft, squashy, diseased or mouldy.

Only plant healthy bulbs, which should be firm and plump when squeezed.

Bulbs prefer an open sunny position or light shade.

Flowering will be reduced if they

don’t receive enough light.

They need very good drainage.

If the soil is heavy or poorly drained, plant them in raised beds or pots.

Prepare the ground by digging over the soil to get rid of any clods, remove any weeds and mix in a complete bulb fertiliser.

Planting depth is important.

Plant at least twice as deep as the bulb is high.

Bulbs are planted with the pointy end upwards and the roots down, except ranunculus and anemone.

They are planted pointy side down.

Bulbs do well in garden beds, in clumps or large drifts, under deciduous trees or planted to naturalise in a lawn.

They are also suitable for planting in pots and containers which can be moved around and brought indoors when in flower.

Spring flowering bulbs are versatile, tough and attractive, thriving on minimum care and delivering maximum beauty year after year.

They herald the end of winter and the arrival of spring.

Rat bait poisoning RODENT control is a real challenge for many people in our community, and a popular plan of attack to keep on top of these pests is to use rat bait.

However, it is important to be aware of how dangerous it can be for our pets if ingested.

Rodenticide poisoning is a common and serious complaint that local Vets are confronted with, dogs being the main culprits but cats have been known to ingest the toxin too.

The toxin takes 48-72 hours to take effect, which is basically stopping the blood from being able to clot.

Without going into too much detail, it causes the liver to stop producing Vit K1, which is needed to produce clotting factors.

Symptoms of poisoning are varied.

Common traits can be lethargy, dark faeces, a cough, pale gums, haematomas and excessive bleeding from minor wounds.

If left too long rat bait poisoning can be

life threatening to pets.

If your pet does display these symptoms and you suspect poisoning, diagnoses is with an activated clotting test (ACT).

Following this, treatment in the early stages is by giving Vit K1 for up to 4 weeks.

If treatment is delayed, your pet may need to be admitted to hospital, placed on IV fluids and sometimes a blood transfusion may be needed.

If you see your pet eat rat bait, or suspect that they have, the best plan of action is to visit your vet as soon as possible.

They will attempt to make your pet vomit, reducing the amount of toxin absorbed.

They will then assess the best treatment plan moving forward.

Preventative action is easy- keep your rat bait secure!

As well as producing mainly individual memoirs (over 30 have been published over the past five years that the project has been running, as well as one anthology), Rod also hopes to eventually produce an instructional manual to help people write memoirs for themselves or others.

“We want it to be sustainable in the long term,” he said.

Rod said that not only were they valuable documents for individual families, they offered an invaluable snapshot of times past, and an insight into the history of not only the local area, but often other parts of Australia and the world.

“We help people piece together their story,” he said.

“The world that these people grew up in is different from mine, and different from yours.”

Anyone interested in learning more or becoming part of the Life Stories program is welcome to contact Rod Davis on 0409 215 286.

In her workshops, Kate aimed to help people get beyond simple facts and details and make their stories come alive, and she found people involved in the program to be “very motivated and very supportive of each other”.

She said helping people write factual yet compelling memoirs can help preserve the legacy and history of the past, as well as the lifelong achievements of older generations.

“They’re very humble in their achievements...and have been very generous in their sharing,” Kate said.

“It’s such a beautiful group to be part of.”

Life stories coordinator Rod Davis said the program was able to run the workshops after recently receiving generous grants.

Through the program, volunteers are paired with St John’s Village residents or community members to help them compile their memoirs, often at the request of families who want to preserve precious family history.

“It’s like a writer’s community,” he said.

GOOD FOR TROUT: The recent rainfall has been fantastic for the region’s wild trout population which should now have plenty of water to swim upstream and spawn in later this month.

AS I type this report it is raining steadily.

This is fantastic for everyone.

At this stage up to 9am Monday we have had more than 45mm of rainfall into the Ovens River at Wangaratta, with Mt Buffalo having more than 170mm, and falls of more than 100mm throughout the Ovens and King catchments, and around 70mm in the Kiewa and Mitta Mitta catchments – all with more expected to come this week.

What does this mean for the fishing?

This is fantastic for trout as it will increase stream flows and open up more spawning opportunities as streams that did not have enough flow now will have.

I think this rain has come just in time for the trout.

The increased flows will deliver a smorgasbord of food to all fish species, but it is the trout that will benefit the most as they feed more actively in the cold water.

But I expect the change in weather will bring the local cod fishing in North East rivers to a grinding halt.

However, the Murray River and Lake Mulwala will still be the places to head for anybody hoping to catch a Murray cod.

The fishing will most likely slow down, but will still tick over slowly and persistent anglers will catch fish.

This is the time of the year that the hard core Murray cod anglers like

to head out targeting the really big Murray cod.

Trolling extra large lures in the really deep Murray River course of Lake Mulwala is a great place to start.

Lake William Hovell should see a bit of fresh water entering the lake which would be great for the trout fishing.

I have not had any reports from Lake William Hovell in the past week or two, but given what I do know about the lake I predict that the next week or so will be a great time to head up there.

Try trolling winged lures such as Tassie Devil’s around the shaded edges of the lake late in the afternoon and early in the morning.

If bait fishing, try fishing a really lightly weighted bunch of worms in the shallow water where the fresh water is entering the lake.

Peanut butter brownie cookie sandwiches

THIS DAY IN HISTORY

Three Mile Creek, 1917 MAY 11 saw the official opening of a new concrete bridge over the Three Mile Creek at South Wangaratta, on the boundary between the Oxley and Wangaratta Shires.

THESE cookies are sandwiched with a rich cream cheese filling that can be flavoured with whatever you like best.

Think double chocolate for extra indulgence or keep it simple with classic pairings like hazelnut or vanilla.

Method Place butter and chocolate in a heatproof bowl over a saucepan of simmering water and stir until melted.

Remove from heat.

Quickly stir in egg, sugar, flour, baking powder, cocoa powder and a pinch of salt until just combined.

Drop half tablespoonfuls of mixture onto trays allowing room for spreading.

Bake at 180°C (160°C fan forced) for 12-15 minutes or until just set.

Cool on trays.

To fill, beat peanut butter frosting ingredients together in a bowl.

Pipe onto biscuits and sandwich together.

Refrigerate for up to one week and bring to room temperature before serving.

Shock, shock and more?

WHAT a week it has been.

There was very little joy in the Federal Budget for Mr Average as the Treasurer looked after the top end of town.

I really wonder how many residents of the North East will benefit from the drop in the marginal tax rates if you earn between $80,001 and $87,000?

But as we are saturated with state and federal budgets I would like to address the dilemma that dairy farmers, who have been loyal to Murray Goulburn over many decades, are now facing with such a huge drop in the amount they will receive for their milk solids.

Previously forecast to be in the order of $5.60 per kilogram of milk solids (kg/ms) to somewhere between $4.75 and $5.00/kg ms.

This will really make things difficult for many dairy farmers to survive and of course it is backdated

It was surprising that as soon as the story broke, we saw the resignations of the managing director Gary Helou and chief financial officer Brad Hingle.

There will be more resignations to follow I am sure.

United Dairy Farmers (UDF) president Adam Jenkins said MG needed to face “more accountability”.

And I understand the chairman of MG has a pay rate in excess of $250,000.

In consulting with a couple of

dairy farmers milking around 300 cows, they tell me that the cost to them, based on what has been reported, will be about $130,000 over the next three years.

And it looks as if Murray Goulburn will need to go and borrow funds which will need to be recouped over the three years from suppliers.

If rumours are correct, Warrnambool Cheese and Butter may have picked up somewhere in the vicinity of an additional 200 million litres of milk.

Australian Dairy Farmers Corporation chairman Scott Sieben said it had fielded enquiry from the equivalent of some 300 million litres of milk.

I was listening to ABC radio the other day when the chairman of Burra Foods was talking about a partnership with Chinese investors, but needed approval from

government for it to happen.

They could take an extra 10 to 20 million litres of milk, but managing director Grant Crothers said he was not aware if they had picked up any MG suppliers.

Dairy farmers who are not suppliers to Murray Goulburn have grave fears that the profit downgrade and milk payments paid by MG will lead to widespread cuts to the price they are paid, even though they believed they would be immune to prices paid by other processors.

Morgan’s analyst Belinda Moore said “Murray Goulburn has not just become known as Australia’s biggest milk processor, it has also been known as a price setter in the market and if the milk price is cut to around $5.30 a kilogram, it will put many farmers in a loss making position”.

Fonterra has also slashed its farm gate price to $5/kg this season, with

the company’s managing director for Oceania, Judith Swales, saying they also had to change.

“We are not immune to the global dairy challengers, and have been upfront throughout the season with our suppliers, expressing caution to our farmers to budget conservatively,” Ms Swales said.

Warrnambool Cheese and Butter advised its suppliers it would continue to pay them $5.60/ kg ms, but WCB farmers are now wondering how long that will be maintained.

Having been involved with the farming community for the past 40 years, this action by MG has been a real kick in the guts for dairy farmers, but I am sure they will weather the storm and prices will increase again in the future.
