WHEN you’re climbing some of the world’s highest peaks, battling freezing cold, bracing winds and dizzying heights, one thing is for sure: there is no room for anything but sharp focus on the task at hand. Few people in the North East know that feeling better than Seane Pieper. He “fell in love” with mountaineering after taking a trip to Nepal with a good friend, during his days at Sydney University. And he has been a regular climber ever since. In fact, mountaineering has forever changed his life – from being the way he met his wife, Bronwyn Martin, to challenging him physically and mentally. Seane said mountaineering helps you maintain clarity and focus. “You strip everything back, and it becomes very simple,” he said. “You can see the curve of the earth. “It varies between frightening and euphoric. “The more you focus on just your environment, the happier you can be.” A veteran of over a dozen trips to the Himalayas, Seane is set to follow one of his ultimate dreams next year – tackling the might of Mt Everest, and is set to head to the Himalayas next month as part of his preparation. “I’ve always wanted to do it,” he said, admitting it’s not the faint hearted. continued page |
