CONTRIBUTING to community projects every year, the Into Our Hands Foundation is set to expand and help even more people in 2017 and beyond, thanks to the efforts of a number of civic minded North East residents. Serving rural communities within the Alpine, Wangaratta and Indigo municipalities, the foundation is an organisation that enables local people to shape the future of their communities by directing resources (money, time and talent) to support worthwhile local initiatives. Initially established as a way to directly help people in fire affected communities, the foundation is now looking to expand into a number of community initiatives. One such keen foundation member is Myrtleford woman Katrina Bendeman, who fell in love with the sense of community in Myrtleford since moving to the area almost three years ago. “It’s been the most amazing time,” Katrina said. “There’s something really different about the people around here.” She has been an executive officer with the foundation since May 2015, having previously lived in the Kinglake area and helping support that area’s continued redevelopment after Black Saturday. Katrina said the foundation is aimed at “enhancing communities through strength, cohesiveness and wellbeing” and she is passionate about people being able to bolster local communities and causes by “giving where they live”. Among the many programs the foundation has helped support in recent months has been a partnership with the Tour of Bright event to help them employ local youth, and helping passionate locals raise money to weatherproof and preserve the Mt Buffalo Chalet. continued page |
