EVEN as a child growing up in Londrigan, Siobhan Reilly was fascinated with nostalgia and glamour.

From admiring her mother Mary’s outfits, to being captivated by her grandmother Una’s jewellery and high tea silverware, the fashion of the past has always been appealing.

Now, she has embraced the resurgence of the vintage era and made a splash in the digital world by sharing her style, experiences and thoughts on body positivity online.

“I’ve always been very nostalgic and there is something so magical about the 1950s,” she said.

“Everything was such a celebration of the finer things in life…it was the done thing to make your own fashionable clothes, everything was handmade with love.

“I’ve enjoyed the story behind vintage items.

“I loved going through my granny’s jewellery and clothes when I was little, and seeing all the amazing clothes my mum wore when she was young.

“My favourite thing of mum’s is a black silk robe with embroidery.

“She always loved embroidery and sequins, and I think she bought it on a world trip with my dad and so it’s very special to me.

“It’s the history for me, just as much as the aesthetic.

“My most treasured possessions once belonged to my mum and granny.”

Pinup style appeals to Siobhan so much that she recently entered her first ‘pinup’ competition - Beauties by the Bay in Williamstown.

“It was a nautical theme and I made my own dress…it was such a fun day out and raised funds for Down Syndrome Victoria,” she enthused.

GOING BANANAS: I’ll bet you never knew there was so much to know about bananas.

Top 10 weirdest facts about bananas I’VE ALWAYS believed I was a bit bananas.

As it turns out, I’m actually half a banana, at least according to my genome.

And that’s just one interesting scientific tid-bit I can share with you about our delicious, yellow, fruity friends.

So without further ado, I present to you the top ten craziest facts about bananas.

1) Bananas are modified hybrids: That’s right, wild bananas look nothing like the banana you buy at the supermarket and are one of the earliest examples of modification through crop husbandry, with evidence dating back millennia.

2) Bananas are clones: Today, most commercial banana plants are perfect clones of a single plant in South East Asia, which puts them at high risk of being wiped out by disease or disaster.

3) Bananas produce antimatter: Approximately one particle of antimatter is discharged from a banana every fifteen minutes due to the radioactive half-life of the potassium contained in the fruit.

Antimatter is the equal opposite of matter, and was a key ingredient in the Big Bang.

4) A banana tree isn’t actually a tree: In fact, it’s a root system and is classified as an arborescent perennial herb, a type of root that produces an above ground stem.

5) The banana itself is a berry: In addition, commercial bananas are seedless triploids, which make them infertile and highly malformed (compared to wild bananas).

6) Bananas are the fourth largest agricultural product in the world: Over 100 billion bananas are consumed annually and they are the staple food of Ugandans.

7) Bananas are really healthy: They contain almost no fat, as well as high amounts of vitamin B6, fibre and potassium.

In addition, they are good sources of phosphorous, magnesium and zinc, as well as vitamins A, B1, B2, C, E, K, Niacin and Pantothenic Acid.

8) Bananas ferment: The riper a banana is, the more brown sugar spots appear, which means they are healthier to consume when they are primarily yellow.

9) Bananas can whiten your teeth: The high amounts of potassium on the inside of a banana skin can be gently applied to your teeth to brighten your smile.

10) Bananas are great hangover cures: I saved the best for last.

Thanks again to all that potassium, eating a banana after a big night out, and just after you get up, can really save you from the old ‘seedy-Sunday’.

WITH the Rio Olympics in full swing, all eyes are focused on the battle for gold. It’s not only gold medals the athletes are competing for; gold is also an important part of Australian tradition.

Since 1908, the Australian Olympic team has worn uniforms of green and gold, which are our national sporting colours.

These colours appear on our national sporting flag - the Boxing Kangaroo.

They come from the colours of our national flower, the Golden Wattle.

Acacia pycnantha, better known as the Golden Wattle, was officially proclaimed the floral emblem of Australia in 1988.

Acacia pycnantha, the Golden Wattle, grows to a height of around 10 metres and produces masses of flowers from late winter through to spring.

There are over 1350 species of acacia worldwide with around 1000 found in Australia.

They are the biggest group of trees and shrubs in Australia and extremely tough, tolerating poor soils and low rainfall.

They range in size from prostrate and low growing species to larger shrubs and trees.

About one third of acacias are in full bloom now, with the rest blooming throughout spring,

summer and into autumn.

Widely known for their fragrant, yellow flowers, some species do flower in other colours.

Flower colour can vary from shades of cream, yellow and gold, red and through to purple.

Acacia leprosa ‘Scarlet Blaze’ originated in Victoria and grows to around five metres high and three metres wide.

It has unusual red flowers from late winter to early spring.

Its foliage has a cinnamon-like scent which becomes stronger in the hot weather.

Acacia purpureapetala, the purple flowered wattle, is a prostrate scrambler found growing only in one area in Queensland.

It features a beautiful delicate purple flower with grey foliage.

At this stage it is not cultivated commercially.

Most acacias can be propagated from seeds or from cuttings.

Milk fever after whelping AFTER the birth of their pups dogs begin the process of feeding them to help them grow rapidly in the first few weeks of life.

As we all know milk is high in calcium and therefore the demand for calcium is at its highest in a lactating mother.

Added to this, calcium is important in muscle contraction and there has been plenty used up during the labour and birth of the pups.

The result is a perfect opportunity for low blood calcium which can be very serious for the dog.

The beginnings of this low calcium are muscle tremors and weakness, which commonly occur within the first few days after the pups are born.

The tremors generate heat (hence the name milk fever) and can deteriorate into an inability to stand and sometimes even seizures.

We obviously wish to avoid

this situation so ensuring a good supply of calcium to the mother in late pregnancy and early lactation is very important.

Feeding your dog a good quality commercial diet throughout the pregnancy is recommended.

The volume of food can be increased in the last three weeks as the pups do most of their growth during this time inside their mother.

It is also important to remember that although the mother needs more food they are often only capable of eating a small meal due to their expanding belly, so feeding 3 or 4 times a day in smaller amounts is often a good idea.

Fresh meat is a poor source of calcium and should not be used as the main part of the mother’s diet.

After the mother delivers the pups, we recommend feeding a good quality commercial puppy food to the mother as these are

You can discuss using a calcium supplement with your veterinarian after the pups are born and this would be recommended in a dog that has previously had milk fever.

Calcium supplementation during pregnancy is not usually recommended as it reduces the dog’s ability to rapidly mobilise calcium from its bones when the need arrives.

Siobhan hopes to make her mark locally this spring at the pinup competition at Bright’s Iconic Rod Run, which is the first pageant she ever saw.

She lives by the motto of one of her idols, Dita Von Teese, who says “I advocate glamour, every day, every minuteâ€?. “There is something so special about feeling like you stepped right out of an old Hollywood movie, a theatrical element that reminds me of playing dress up. “When I look good I feel good‌ the fifties style is very flattering on my curves and has given me so much confidence. “I really enjoy expressing myself through my style. “There are days when I want to wear all red and black and have more a rockabilly vibe, then I have my moments of wanting to wear pastels and flowers in my hair. “You are only limited by your imagination. “Nothing beats wearing vintage for feeling special and you’re guaranteed you won’t see anyone else wearing the same thing.â€?

Siobhan said body positivity is an

important part of her wardrobe, and her writing. “I believe women should build each other up and as hard as it can seem, to ignore what ‘fashion rules’ say and wear what you like and feel comfortable in,� she said. “Life is too short to wait until you have your ideal body to wear what you like. “Take the plunge and once you start wearing the things you like they will give you more confidence and you may just find yourself happy in your own skin the way you are. “I’ve reached a point where I’m happy with my curves. “The pinup community is very body positive on the whole, and most major brands stock larger sizes.�

And for those pondering the pinup lifestyle, while Siobhan mainly wears vintage reproduction clothes, she said she found the best vintage in smaller op shops and smaller towns, especially around Wangaratta.

Wide spectrum of events and competitions FROM sled dogs to skiing and snowboarding, there is no shortage of activities in the alpine areas this week.

This weekend at Dinner Plain sees the Dinner Plain Sled Dog Challenge, one of the snow based sled dog races in Australia.

More than 80 mushers (dog team drivers) and more than 350 sled dogs are expected to compete in this year’s event, taking place on August 13-14.

Activities at Falls Creek this week include the regular and entertaining Falls Creek Night Show on Thursday, as well as the Ski de Femme event taking place on Saturday.

Record freeze, 1872 THE lowest temperature recorded in Beechworth to that time was recorded on August 10, 1872.

It was a Saturday, and when the district folk awoke, they found even large dams frozen, and two inches of snow at Stanley.

The temperature in Beechworth between 6-7am was recorded as 22 degrees Fahrenheit, or 10 degrees below freezing.

Method 1. To prepare the lamb, heat a large heavy based saucepan over a moderately high heat. Seal the lamb shanks in the oil for eight minutes or until well coloured, before setting them aside.

2. In the same pan, add the onion, carrot and celery for three minutes, then add the spices and stir for 30 seconds. Place the shanks back in the pan and add the tomato puree and stock before bringing to the boil. Cover and turn down to a gentle simmer.

3. Once the soup is gently simmering, cook for two hours or until the meat is very tender before taking off the stove.

4. Remove the shanks and set-aside until cool enough to handle. Pull the meat off the bone and shred it with a fork.

5. Set the soup over a moderate heat and add the shredded meat

FUNDRAISING has changed a lot since the days of knocking on people’s doors and ringing on their bells in search of a dollar.

While our landlines are still inundated with calls from organisations seeking assistance, the “don’t knock� stickers and no-call registers are sending a clear message that we don’t like our personal space invaded.

Instead the big organisations are jumping on the “experiential� bandwagon, asking us to bake cupcakes, run relays, wear jeans or grow a moustache in support of a good cause.

Perhaps we could apply the same principle to supporting our local producers and host a “prosecco party� or “shiraz shindig�, where everyone brings along a bottle of their local drop to share.

Regional Assessment Services Coordinators will be the coordinating mechanism at the local level to assist the DHHS as the manager of Home Support Assessment for older people, with the requisite transition and change management activities needed to corral 92 separate HACC assessment agencies and assessment workforces into the Eight RAS Catchments.

Have Olympiads run their race?

AS I sit and write this article, I wonder how many more summer Olympiads will be held.

2024 has four bidders proceeding to the next stage, after Hamburg and Boston withdrew their bids, both citing money problems, with Los Angeles becoming the US bidder.

Budapest, Paris and Rome at this point of time are the European countries who are sending delegations to Rio to observe what would be required of them to host the Games.

Not since Sydney in 2000, has a city been able to profit from the influx of visitors who pay large sums to attend, and given the adverse publicity about Rio de Janeiro I wonder how ticket sales are going?

through the lines that Rio de Janeiro was not equipped to conduct such an event, the majority of citizens did not want the Games and there was insufficient checking of infrastructure done by the IOC. And don’t forget the Zika virus which is supposedly rampant in Brazil.

Why did I talk about the Olympic Games?

Well, I saw an article where Brisbane could be a candidate to bid for the 2028 Games and it worries me that our government, who have been crying poor for the past few years that the budget deficits are getting larger.

Can Australia afford to spend in the vicinity of $20 billion of government money to run a sporting event which at best may break even and defy history?

In London, unpaid volunteers known as Games Makers performed a variety of tasks before and during the Games.
